@TenaciousC I hope you’re right! When my d told me about it she said that she had missed the May 1 deadline and wouldn’t get priority. But if she was reading what you were reading I would agree with your interpretation.
Hi all! My D graduated from Tisch in 2017 and was placed in Playwrights Horizons for her primary training, loved it so much she stayed there for her junior year, and then chose Stonestreet Studios for her advanced training her senior year. I would be happy to answer any questions about those studios or Tisch in general. I can’t wait to hear about everyone’s placements!
I actually have a question! Is there really just one move in day? How does that possibly work for the freshman dorms? I know parking in the city is difficult to begin with.
I can handle that! Yes, there is just one move-in day! It’s organized to a T and we had no problems (YMMV!).
The student will have a slot to move-in and an earlier slot to pick up their student ID and package. If they miss that slot, no problem - they just go later. But you need that ID to get into the dorms (security is good).
The drop off line (for cars, many people Uber, we walked from the hotel) is set up in front of each dorm with student helpers waiting and big rolling hampers for the dorm stuff. Wait in the car line, get to the front, put stuff in hampers, say good-bye to the car and let the non-drivers wait in line for the elevator. The elevator line stretches down the block. With social distancing the lines may be even longer but the process moves pretty well so it probably won’t be much slower. The helpers will assist you and your hamper to the room and take the empty one back down.
Once you’ve got everything up to the room it takes an hour or so to unpack and then you figure out what you forgot and go shopping or promise to send it because you don’t want to face the lines at BB&B (which is walking distance from campus, as is a Container Store). There is no shortage of places to shop in NYC, just a reminder!
I mailed my kid a lot of stuff as she needed it. The mail system is great - you can send any size package to the dorm, the student gets an email and they pick up their stuff in their dorm basement. Works a charm so don’t feel you need to bring everything they might need. NYU has always had fun move-in events for students like “Bed Bath & Beyond After Dark” and Silent Rave but my guess is those may be canceled this year.
Most freshman parents stay for at least one night to enjoy the city and say good-bye, some stay longer. A lot of students have parents around that first night so don’t assume your kid won’t want you there! She’ll have plenty of time to bond with her roomies when you’re gone or if one of the roommates is on their own you can adopt them for the evening. College students appreciate that!
Upperclassmen can arrive at the dorms on move-in day or later in the week, my D chose later so we only did move-in day once!
@BloomingGirl Move-in day is one day. At 3rd North, students were assigned times to move in based on floor so move-in was staggered over several hours. There was a space outside the dorm that was blocked off for cars to stop and unload into large bins. There were students there to help. We purchased most everything in advance and picked up at Bed Bath and Beyond so we did not drive into the city. There are free shuttle buses that loop from dorms to BBB all day. It was a smooth and organized process! When we picked up her stuff in March, we did drive in and parked in a garage nearby. There are several in the area.
Lol. I didn’t see your reply @CaMom13 before posting. ?
Well my D was in Brittany @yellahamma so good to know they both work the same!
Thank you @yellahamma and @CaMom13 ! That sounds very doable!
My daughter got in ED1 and has been awaiting studio placement. Tonight I logged into her Albert to see if anything had changed because there were posts on FB about other schools doing surveys for online fall classes. There was nothing about that, but all over her information was uploaded to include her major. Are all Tisch drama students considered theatre majors? Just trying to figure out if the theatre for major gives any insight into the studio.
@Georgia122 - Congrats to her! All Tisch Drama Degrees are the same: BFA Drama, even for those studying in the MT studio. I don’t think there’s any hints on Albert! And your D likely won’t get her studio assignment through Albert - if history holds (and god knows this year is one for the history books) she’ll get an email with her studio assignment before she sees anything online.
@Georgia122 I thought our wait was hard but you guys have been waiting forever!
Yes, it has been forever. We were first told she would find out when RD was announced, then we were told first of May and on the webinar they said the end of May. She is super excited, but also very curious about placement.
Just throwing it out there - my daughter is “graduating” (virtually) from NYU/Tisch next week. If anyone has questions about Meisner/Classical/Stonestreet, we(she) can help you! She did her 2 years of primary work at Meisner; transferred to Classical as a Junior and did two semesters of Stonestreet as a senior. Exciting times for you all! Wish I could go back in time (and do everything but pay the tuition over again!)
@CaMom13 , @yellahamma @4gsmom and @jbtcat - thank you all for this helpful information and for tossing the line out about studio info! @Georgia122 - congrats! So glad you and @BloomingGirl are along for the ride with us - my S was also ED1, so is on pins and needles now knowing the studio placement should be out in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait to hear more once we know.
I haven’t posted this anywhere yet, but my kid has committed to NYU Tisch, so we’re waiting for studio assignments along with you all. Super excited for my extremely happy kid! Big thanks to @CaMom13 for all the support behind the scenes that helped get us to this place.
Yay @TenaciousC !!!
I know it was a difficult choice to make, @TenaciousC, and I am so happy that he’s so happy!!! Make sure to do a final decision post when/if you can - always the best thread of the applications cycle.
From the email D received today, it appears NYU is going forward with on-campus plans for the fall with a go-local option for those that have an NYU campus close. Am I reading too much into the email based on my desire of a return?
No @yellahamma - you’re not. They’ve been saying since late April that they were committed to an in-person on-site return to school in the Fall. I think the go-local option is more for internationals, especially Asians - there are a lot of Chinese students and they may be admitted to NYU-NYC but need to study at NYU-Shanghai this year. NYU is planning on remote enabling every class, which allows quarantined students and remote-located students to study the same as on-site students… but it’s easy to see that this ALSO enables them to shut down on-site classes and go to remote instruction any time it’s needed. Given that the alternatives for a gap year kind of suck ( ) I am putting my trust in what NYU is stating they will do. We are 100% planning on Fall semester starting in August in NYC.
Hooray, @TenaciousC !! So happy for your son! Welcome to the family! Can’t wait to hear where all our kids land, studio-wise.
That’s interesting what you say about NYU remote-enabling their classes, @CaMom13 , that tracks with what I just read on Bloomberg News. The article said that they’re planning on in-person classes this fall but some classes would be offered online. Among other adjustments.
