I think it’s a given that all large lecture classes everywhere (at every school) will be given remotely @tsamuique . That’s one easy “swipe” at the covid transmission problem in a classroom environment. It’s more of a challenge how to physically distance students and teachers in smaller classes and still keep the classes remote-enabled for the students who can’t physically attend. For our kids it’s a little different and even harder as they don’t just “sit” in class. Still waiting to hear from Tisch how the acting, dancing / movement and singing classes will work. Personally, I am expecting voice to be online as covid-19 transmission through singing is well documented. The other classes really need to be in person but I’m not holding my breath we’re going to hear any plans on how they’ll accomplish that before school starts. It’s going to challenge everyone’s patience and creativity… happily creativity is one thing Tisch students and teachers both have in over-supply… patience will need to be the work-in-progress.
On a (hopefully) non-covid-19 note for freshman parents: Parents Day* is October 24th and especially for you parents who didn’t get an accepted students visit in, it’s a very worthwhile event. Pretty much all I know about my D’s studio I learned that day. Tisch Drama is not great at communicating or social media usage, imo - they tend to have a “just trust us” kind of vibe - but I did get a lot of information on exactly who I was trusting and why when we went in the Fall. Again, like everything, this has an asterisk (* pandemic events permitting) but it’s worth planning a refundable trip now.
@tsamuique Thank you! Super happy to be part of the family! I’m excited to hear studio assignments, too.
@CaMom13 I’m all about booking the refundable trips right now! If my kid is safely learning on campus and I’m safely visiting him for parent’s weekend in October we’ll be living the dream. Trying to take things one day at a time.
In terms of being safe on campus, it makes me feel slightly better to send him to Manhattan where there seems to be the highest concentration of medical expertise dealing with this virus. Fingers crossed none of us will need it.
@CaMom13 ,yup, it makes sense that the larger classes would be online. I’m crossing my fingers that they work out a hybrid system where they do the riskiest classes online (voice, large lectures) and keep studio work in person since it’s done in small groups. I did notice that NYU moved it’s deferral deadline up a month, to 7/1 from 8/1 --and heard anecdotally that a final decision about the fall term would be made after 7/15. So my S, who has struggled with online learning in HS and chomping at the bit to start his studio work, is in limbo. He doesn’t know what to take a chance on. He wants more than anything to be there in September in person but is really over the whole online thing.
Well, the media has picked up this story based on a letter the Provost of NYU sent about Fall being on campus - it’s old news because they’ve been saying it all along but my D likes that it keeps getting confirmed.
Here’s the actual letter (if you haven’t see it):
Dean Green sent out an email to students repeating much of the Provost’s letter and saying the each individual department would be in touch soon to let the students know their department specific plans. She also added these bits as to what Tisch was specifically doing as part of their overall changes:
"Aligning our planning and safety protocols with leading theaters, film and television studios, arts organizations, as well as game and media companies to maintain the close connection to industry which has always been a distinguishing characteristic of a Tisch education. We intend to prepare you to enter a changed industry in which standards are being re-set right now.
A highly-coordinated use of our classrooms, studios, labs, and public spaces to decrease the density of people."
So as far as I can tell, all the “news” is good! I don’t question things can change but I think the decision is already made that school will be back in session on campus if the authorities and health advisories permit.
Thank you for this, @CaMom13 !!
Holding my breath because if history is a guide (and there is little reason for me to count on that in a crazy year like this) the studio placements might be out tomorrow. I see here on CC that last year they came out on the last Friday in May. Crossing fingers we all get news soon!
@tsamuique I was just coming on here to see if anyone knew for sure when the students would hear! My d has heard the 30th but doesn’t know if that’s a fact or just rumor that’s being passed around.
@tsamuique @BloomingGirl I’m hoping that we all hear today or tomorrow! The placements have been one of the most exciting parts about all of this! Does anyone have a prediction about what they’re going to get?
@alwayshp394 My d wants NSB but I’m going to guess Strasberg. We are happy with anything though!
@BloomingGirl Crossing my fingers for her! I’m hoping for Atlantic (even though I said Meisner in my interview). I’m guessing that they’ll put me in Playwrights based on how my interview went. Excited no matter what!
LOL @alwayshp394 - why Playwrights? I can’t wait to hear everyone’s studios! It’s like the last piece fitting in.
@alwayshp394 Reading your comment made me think of a conversation I had with D after her audition last year. When her auditor asked, she said she saw herself at Strasberg (which is where she was assigned) but based on the conversation in the room, she was convinced it was going to be Playwrights. All the best. ?
@CaMom13 When talking to my auditor I mentioned how I loved casting and how I also liked directing and writing. I also mentioned that I thought it was important to know how everything worked (not that I want to do it), but that it helps to know how things work on a set. Playwrights would be cool, but I’m not sold on the design aspect lol. I didn’t exactly love my Costuming class and I kinda hated my Stagecraft one. Maybe it’ll be different if I was assigned to the right studio. I honestly think any of the studios would be awesome though. Plus I could always try to transfer to another studio after my primary training.
@yellahamma lol I told my auditor that I liked Meisner the best. I actually got nervous before my interview so I wrote down the names of the studios and my preferences. Meisner was number one, while Atlantic was number two. Over the past few weeks it did a switch on me! I’m super excited to get my studio. The only other thing I’m waiting on is my housing. I would be crushed not to get housing because it’s going to be nearly impossible to convince my parents to let me live off campus. They’ve already told me that I can’t go without housing. Hoping to hear some good news in the next week or so!
How does your D like Strasberg? I’ve been watching a lot of videos on YouTube and the people on there have nothing but great things to say about it!
@alwayshp394 Fingers crossed that housing comes through for you. D loves Strasberg! ?
We are still waiting as well. Do you happen to remember what time of day the information was sent for studio placement?
@georgia122 D’s studio assignment was released early afternoon on May 31 last year. She was accepted ED so it was a long wait.
Thanks @yellahamma! My daughter was accepted in ED1, so it has been an eternity.
I have no guesses for studio placement for my S. He did the MT audition, but is not your “archetypal” MT kid, so who knows where they see him fitting in. I had some guesses based on what I think his strengths are, but then I attended the webinar where they said they tend to put people where they need the most growth… so now I have no clue! He mentioned Meisner in his interview, but that was because he was grasping at straws, lol. That said, if I were to say where he should be based on where he needs to grow the most, Meisner would be a contender. Based on his strengths and personality, I’d have bet on ETW or Atlantic. So, really no idea!
