My S says there are emails going out that Tisch will be fully online this fall, although he has not yet received such an email himself. Does anyone here know anything about this? He also says that if they do not take housing at NYU this fall they will not be guaranteed housing in the spring semester, even though they’ll be fully online.
Right now this is JUST A RUMOR because he’s reporting what other people say they’ve read. I’m just hoping someone here has more info.
Sorry if I’m creating a stir. Just worried about that housing guarantee if it’s fully online.
Ugh, he just got the email confirming that Tisch Drama is fully online for the fall. He’s really bummed. I’m still unclear about the housing guarantee. I really hope they don’t force the kids to go there to live in a dorm if they don’t even feel safe having small classes in person.
Yep. D got the email but she’s at work and I haven’t read it. I think one of her other classes was already online. I don’t know that she would do the online drama classes. She made it work for the second half of the semester, but is not interested in a full day in her dorm which has no AC.
D called housing. If she stays home in the fall, she would be waitlisted for the spring. She also got her room assignment today.
That’s awful! How can they expect kids to live in the dorm and parents paying for that if all the classes are online?
And I wonder why they’re going online, after the whole “blended” approach they previously figured out? I know covid is skyrocketing in other parts of the country, but New York is doing great. I could see having out-of-state kids quarantine for two weeks upon arrival, and testing everyone before classes start, but I’m surprised they’re going back to fully online.
I’m depressed. After all the planning, all the accommodations … and we just got my D an apartment! This is awful news. @actorparent1 - I don’t know. Why go to all this trouble to prepare and throw it out the window?
It’s really depressing. And the Freshmen don’t have the option to not enroll for the semester. They’d have to apply for a deferral and that deadline passed 2 weeks ago.
The housing guarantee thing is the sticking point for me. If they can’t guarantee safety even in reduced-size studio classes, how to they figure they can do it in dorms? How can they hold students to the obligation to live on campus?
My S is a freshman and needs to fly the nest. In all likelihood, he goes down there. But shouldn’t we have maximum flexibility in the decisions we make to keep him safe if they can’t guarantee it in classes?
Ugh.
Also, I’m really hoping that they give students the option to enroll partially --allow them to take just their academic classes without having to do a full 16 credits so that those students who wanted to do 8 semesters of studio still can, just spread out over more semesters.
I understand their need to maintain safety protocols. I would just hope that in return for our being flexible that they would also be flexible.
Ok, rant over.
Silver lining: our kids are going to be super resilient and are getting in on the ground floor of rebuilding a devastated industry.
That’s a lovely thought @tsamuique and once I stop stress-eating I’ll try to appreciate it.
I hope NYU will be flexible on the housing policy. D’s classes are all online now. She had one that was in person but when she checked tonight, it had changed (not a major requirement). She is scheduling a meeting with her advisor to see if she can get some in person classes. If not, we will contact housing (again) and student affairs. Who else would one contact about being completely online and losing the housing guarantee for not returning? Seriously. The rules changed late in the game.
I would write the office of the President @yellahamma and ask them to address this policy as in its current state (given the school’s changes for this Fall) it is unreasonable. I wrote them when the poorly-considered email about all students returning to campus to get their belongings was sent by Housing in March. President Hamilton’s office heard from a lot of parents about that and a change in the policies for dorm clear-out was made shortly thereafter.
I’ll add his office to the list of recipients. Thanks @CaMom13.
@yellahamma thank you for taking the time to write about this. I may do the same. My S is still planning to board there, but it should be a choice that is supported by what’s best for the student and not forced by the University over a housing guarantee.
I think the thing that bugs me the most about it is that it contradicts the stated policy of putting classes online for safety reasons. They are actively incentivizing people to travel from afar and live together in dorms rather than making it easy for them to choose stay home and keep the dorms free for more social distancing for the people who have to live in them or who choose to live in them.
@tsamuique I found the FB group you referenced. Same concerns were voiced there so we are in good company. If I get a response, I will share. ?
@yellahamma yes - that moderator is great! I’m so grateful she’s taking this on and communicating for the group. I voiced the same concern over there, so here’s hoping.
My S, meanwhile, is part of a group of incoming students who are talking about how to distill concerns and communicate the main ones affecting all of them to admin. He’s on a Zoom call right now.
I think @alwayshp394 is a part of that group too - am I right?
Hats off to the advocates!
Oops, I realized I could edit the above comment because I was within 15 minutes and now I’m stuck editing this one because there’s no delete option.
@tsamuique Yep! I was part of the group that helped get the groups together! We’ve been working for a while now. A form to sign your name is coming out soon
Saw that on Facebook, @alwayshp394 - well done!! It’s a great letter. I hope you guys get traction. Congratulations on focusing the group on the central issue and coming up with a proposed solution!
I saw the letter on FB too, great job @alwayshp394 and @tsamuique 's son and everyone else who was involved! My d has not even gotten a housing assignment yet, just an email saying that they were unable to give her an assignment at this time. Very stressful!
@tsamuique we’re definitely excited. We’re sending out the email in a few hours!
Oh, @BloomingGirl , that is stressful! Especially when you see that others have their housing assigned. I wonder if they’re rolling it out in phases to see who passes so that they can maintain some sort of spacing out in the dorms? Just a wild, flailing guess.
@alwayshp394 crossing fingers for you guys on the letter. It really is excellent - respectful, problem-solving, and takes the spirit of compromise. Good luck!!!
