New for 2024: NYU Studio Placement discussion

My d is very excited to be able to room with a close friend!

D received an email addressed to second year students from Ruben today. The plan for them is to complete half of the studio hours(4 hours)in the fall in a blended scenario. Spring, as it looks now, will remain blended but all 8 hours of studio will be on the schedule. After spring finals, students will do 3 weeks of studio work to make up for the 4 hours missed during the fall semester. D is excited to have a plan and looking forward to 3 extra weeks in the summer.

Incoming Freshman just got a similar message with the same breakdown of credits. S is really hoping that “blended” is only virtual for things like voice lessons and that they can do in person work in the fall. Crossing fingers!

My D got a couple of emails from her studio director and those indicated that “blended” for studio classes (like dance and acting) meant you could attend on-site or remotely with the on-site classes limited to a fraction of their previous capacity to allow for physical distancing. I wasn’t super impressed by the information provided - it seems like they should be able to give us more concrete info at this stage - but we’re reassured that the studio classes are still expected to be in person.

Thank you for that update, @CaMom13 ! My S just knows his studio will be “Blended” but we don’t have specifics as to what portions of the studio might be online. He’s not in the MT studio, so voice lessons are likely not in the mix. (Since all voice lessons are now remote, he’ll just continue with his current voice teacher while he’s there. No need to switch - so, one bonus to the move to remote learning. )

@tsamuique - I hope you’ve got better info by now. As an upperclassman my D can explore different studios and she is doing a semester at Stonestreet (Film & TV) this Fall. She got word they were doing most of the curriculum online and then having small in-person working groups with an acting teacher. She’s pretty happy with that approach. I think every studio is adjusting differently but the basic goal at Tisch is to get in as much in-person work as can safely be done. Crossing fingers!!!

D received dorm assignment today. It is not one of the five she selected, but her group is together so she’s happy.

Well this year is so weird @yellahamma - they’ve had to turn triples into doubles and doubles into singles. Glad her group is together. Next year if she wants to rent, I’ll be happy to share our experience!

Weird indeed, @CaMom13! Why ask for a preference if housing is just going to throw spaghetti at the wall? The other girls have to take the train to their studio so they wanted dorms near Union Square. I hope you will share your experience for apartment hunting because D might go that route next year. ?

Once we get her moved in @yellahamma - I will! I wouldn’t want to declare success too prematurely! Just take my word for it that it was WAY easier for her to dorm, NYC landlords are insane.

My kid will be .8 mile from her first semester studio and/or Wa Sq for academics so she’ll have a nice healthy walk each day. Pearl, otoh, is an additional mile away so second semester will be a good time for her to take up jogging. I can’t see her taking the subway that often, it won’t save much time and she’d generally rather be moving.

Good luck with the move-in! D’s dorm is a walk up. Her room will be sparse unless she’s on the first floor.

Wow! I didn’t even know NYU had dorms without elevators?! Good thing they provide all the furniture… Funny story (well, in retrospect) - freshman year my D was in Brittany Hall. We came from CA so I packed everything she needed into 3.5 suitcases - with the remaining .5 being my clothes. I planned everything carefully, packed super well, the bags were just under the weight limit, we stayed in a hotel very close to her dorm and literally walked her luggage over. I was feeling pretty smug that we’d avoided having to take an car. Got to the dorm, hot and a little sweaty from the August day and saw the elevator line with all the people with massive rolling carts of stuff going down the street. Since we had relatively little, we decided we could take the stairs. Lugging those 3.5 almost 50 lb bags. To the 7th floor. I almost passed out about floor 4. I had to rest at each floor landing and by floor 6 I was resting twice. One of those times in which my great planning was somewhat destroyed by my total lack of patience. We did make it, she did move in… but it wasn’t the effortlessly smooth move-in process I had envisioned!

He’s met his advisor, @CaMom13 , and has already developed a rapport with his studio mates, who’ve met together via zoom twice now. Not sure how much more info he has on exactly how his studio plans to do its thing apart from the divided credits (4 credits of studio deferred until after 2nd semester.) We assume that’s so they can have smaller groups meet in person in the fall. Advisor said more info would be forthcoming.

The good news is he’s really happy and feels like he’s “found his people.” @alwayshp394 - were you in the Zooms? He says he met a couple of transfer students. He was chatting with everyone until 3 AM last night! :joy:

And thank you for the dorm warnings! He thinks he knows what dorm he’s in but I just read something on the NYU parents forum on facebook that said to take that with a grain of salt. So we won’t start preparing until we know for sure!

@tsamuique Did anyone state the reason for taking the dorm assignment with a grain of salt? Last year D’s dorm was assigned at the beginning of July and was first posted to her bursar’s account. Same for this year. Just wondering if someone has had the dorm assigned and then changed. That was not D’s experience last year. Thanks!

@tsamuique haha yeah! I’ve done three zooms with my studio mates and one of them was last night! I went to bed at 1:00 am because I got super tired! I am 99% sure I know who your son is and he’s super awesome! I’m hoping that we’ll be in the same color group. And i’ve been feeling the same way; I feel like i’ve found my people. Now i’m just waiting to find out about dorms. Fingers crossed!! ?

@yellahamma I’m searching around and of course now I can’t locate the comment. Please take my report as 100% hearsay - I read it somewhere but not from an authoritative source. Someone said that they were “testing the system” and that dorms were put in but not necessarily final. Wish I could find it again. So sorry if that caused worry! I think relying on your experience is much more solid than my Facebook-telephone game!

@alwayshp394 So great to know that your incoming class is already bonding in this way. So happy for all of you!

@tsamuique No worries! I found the comment interesting because one of my D’s roommates said something similar. Hearing that info twice in a 24 hour window made me go hmmm.

Could be people are mixing up dorm assignments in Albert with class types…? NYU has said they are still working on classifying classes as remote, blended, in-person and not to take those indicators as final yet. When my D got her dorm assignment it was final.

So glad the new student zooms are already connecting students in a positive way! Two years ago the freshmen had to connect using group chat … how quaint that seems now!

That’s definitely a helpful thought, @CaMom13 - could be that for sure. He’s got a dorm assignment in there so we’ll see if it holds up. He’s not attached if it doesn’t so it’s all good.

It really will be interesting to see how Zoom will remain in place as a supportive platform in ways we never expected once we get back to whatever our “new normal” will look like in the future. I already see it as so useful for our HS theatre program to give us flexibility in solving some problems we had before the pandemic. I love that it’s a platform for the students to bond before heading off to college together. That will probably stick around too.
