I am in the midst of rereading the Reacher series, you know the one where every single book repeatedly talks about his size & looks, 6’5" 230-250# depending. And they cast Tom Cruise???!!

I know we talked about this when it was first announced, but I just saw the ad and it made me sad. I did not like Matt Damon as Bourne, nor Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan either, I guess I am too picky or have an overly strong imagination.

Tom probably bought the rights to the books and cast himself. Only explanation.

I was trying to think of who would be better, and while almost anyone wuld be better, I kind of liked the idea of a stven segal type who could act. Aren’t a lot of tall buff actors out there, sadly

My pick would have been Jason Statham. Although, JS will be portraying Richard Starks (aka Donald E Westlake) Parker in a movie scheduled for release January 2013.

I have read at least 10 of Lee Childs Jack Reacher novels and refuse to see the movie. It may indeed be enjoyable for someone who has not read the books.

Just the thought that Tom Cruise is playing Jack Reacher has ruined the movies for me. I probably won’t even go see it. I had read that Lee Child wanted Tom Cruise for the part… crazy! Reacher’s size is a key part of his character and the stories. Don’t know what they were thinking casting Cruise.

DH has been a HUGE fan of the books (and the character Jack Reacher) since they were first published. When he heard about the casting of Tom Cruise, he was incredulous just because Reacher’s size plays such a big part in the books. Now that we’re seeing the commercials? There’s no way he’s going to see it.

Of course, many movie goers don’t have a concept of the idea behind the movie so they will go and enjoy it. But I don’t know anybody who’s a fan of the books who’s happy with Mr. Cruise’s casting.

I wonder if the producers are planning to populate the rest of the movie with little people or children. Perhaps tricks of videography? I really enjoy the Reacher books, but I won’t see the movie because of Tom Cruise. Ridiculous, inappropriate casting.

I have read every Jack Reacher book and I happen to enjoy Tom Cruise. HOWEVER…what were they thinking with this casting!!! Totally wrong. I thought I read something that they had considered Chris Helmsworth for the part at one time. He has the perfect stature but I know nothing of his acting. At least I can see him in the part!

My SO is a big fan of these books too and he’s in the camp of not even being able to watch the commercials. He is NOT a happy camper. It’s not just the size thing, either. It’s the Tom Cruise weirdo factor.

I have only read the first novel in the series and from the outset Reacher’s size has been a main focus. From that perspective Tom Cruise makes no sense. I can understand if Lee Child wanted Tom cruise…it translates into a major release and lots o’ $s!

Yes i meant Christian Bale.
Oops.
& although I am familiar with big blond guys, the ones I know are kinda goofy, so Reacher never struck me as blond or blue eyed even though wikipedia tells me so.
If casting wanted to go with blond, they also could have went with Josh Holloway, who is 6’2" and seems like he could handle a physical role. ( he was Sawyer on Lost)
If he was a little younger, I would have cast Liam Neeson.Hes 6’4", plus he gives off the air of someone who had " done & seen stuff" ;).
I really dont understand casting of Cruise, not only is he about a foot shorter than Reacher, he is known for his ear to ear grin, although I do admit he has an air of unpredictability.
But in some films, less familiarity is necessary- and Cruise has been in People magazine an awful lot ( which I dont read, but I do go to check out counters), which Id think would work against him.

Add me to the list of Child readers boycotting the movie.

A young Nick Nolte would have been good. Viggo Mortensen and Sean Bean in their blond incarnations would be great. (Both perhaps a little old now, but that is far less of an issue than Cruise’s midget stature and giant ego.) Agree about Liam Neeson.

Really, it is difficult to imagine worse casting. Nathan Lane, maybe? :D
