New Lap Top or Slate for Electrical Engineering Major?

Abstract: I have a Lap Top already - Qosmio X505, 1 year old, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360m graphics card, and 4G of ram. However, as I’ll be starting in college for electrical engineering next fall, should I get a new computer (one that can play the high-end games I wanna get a little smoother, compile programs on Visual Studio faster, and render drawings in Auto CAD faster) OR should I invest in one of the new “Slate” tablets coming out with Windows 7/8, such as the Samsung Series 7 Slate or one of the Lenovo slates with a digitizer pen so I can take notes on them?

New Laptop (don’t necessarily NEED it, but it would be nice)

OR

Windows 7 slate with digitizer pen for taking notes/drawing diagrams/typing while in class? (I’ll still have my old computer for creating more detailed documents and typing up essays)

Any suggestions? Are these new slates useful in a college environment? I’ve been considering one because of how many notebooks/pencils/pens I carry around in my backpack already and how archaic it is for taking notes (NOT that the good’ol fashion way is bad xP) compared to being able to have it all on one tablet, saved in a file for each class and assignment.
