I am hooked on this podcast and have gone way down the rabbit hole of this case. As the parent of a high school senior, the fact that the “kids” in the story of 1999 are the same age as my kid is now, adds to the compelling-ness!

If you can’t wait til Thursday, I highly recommend the blog of the Muslim lawyer/family friend who advocates for Adnan. It’s called split the moon. She has promised to give no spoilers and discuss the elements of the case as they roll out on the podcast. Interestingly, she is much more sophisticated than she is presented in the podcast. She is quite accomplished and works for a think tank or something, but the podcast suggested she is a strip mall lawyer scraping by.

I initially thought Jay did it and framed Adnan, now I think they did it together. We are definitely being manipulated by the story telling. I still want there to be something that exculpates Adnan.

Jay was convicted of a crime (accessory to murder, I suppose) and given a five year suspended sentence.

Presumably when the police went to Jenn, she gave them Jay, and he talked in exchange for a deal. I have no problem with that, because I think Adnan killed Hae. I’m willing to let the accomplice walk to jail the killer.

Just listened to the latest episode and the “slate spoiler special” discussing the episode. I feel like Adnan had a bad lawyer maybe, or perhaps not the right lawyer for that jury. She sounded abrasive and hectoring and a bit nonsensical.
What do you think?

I agree. But I disagree with the various defense experts on the strength of the evidence. I tend to believe Jay and think that Adnan probably did it. (Though I think Jay had a much larger role). I certainly think the evidence was sufficient to convict Adnan. Jay’s testimony is pretty powerful eyewitness testimony. I can’t imagine that the District Attorney would decline to prosecute a case with such an eyewitness.

Yeah when you put it that way -it does make sense. You have a someone who says that he helped bury a body -you can’t ignore that. On the other hand -I don’t know if we have a clear picture of how Jay’s story came out. Did he start with that story -or did he develop it after the heat was on?

We heard from Sarah that Leakin Park was not far from Adnan’s home neighborhood. It’s possible the tower pinged would also include other locations where Adnan might have been.

Both calls hit the cell tower that covers Leakin Park. The range of those towers CAN reach just beyond the territory of the park. BUT, the amount of luck necessary to make up a story about being in Leakin Park and then to have to have the cell phone records corroborate it is just too great.

I confess I zoned out a bit over the cell stuff. I understand that it is not as reliable as we would like it to be for determining someones location

We know the body was buried at Leakin Park. Either Adnan’s phone was at Leakin Park the night of the disappearance, or Adnan’s phone was not at Leakin Park the night of the disappearance but by the merest chance Adnan’s phone just happened to connect to the Leakin Park cell tower, out of all of the places it could have connected to, at a very likely time for the body to be buried. Yeah. I know which of those stories I believe.
