New Santa Monica College Student Who Has Questions

I’m going into my freshman year at Santa Monica College and was wondering if any other Santa Monica College students out there could answer my questions. When and how will I receive my student ID (because I will need it to move into my student housing). Where do I find the list of supplies I need for each class? Why are some books for the classes I need unavailable online to rent/purchase? In might have a few more questions later that I can’t think of right now, but I’d greatly appreciate any and all answers.

Welcome to SMC!

You get your ID on campus at the Bursar’s office, which is near counseling. Ask anyone on campus and they will point you the right way. Make sure you also get your sticker so that you can ride the Big Blue Bus for free (if you paid the AS an ID fees)/

Generally professors give out a syllabus on the first day of class that will list any specific supplies needed. For most classes a notebook, pen, highlighter, and folder is enough.

Here is the link for the bookstore, which will list the books for each class. It can be pricey, so many people buy from A&R on Pico Blvd or from Amazon/Chegg. Others just ask around to see if anyone is selling it on campus. Sometimes books are unavailable because the bookstore has run out or hasn’t received a shipment. I’ve found that copying and pasting the ISBN into Amazon will likely give me the correct book. http://bookstore.smc.edu/</a></p>

I know at least @Cayton is a former SMC student who might have another point of view or more suggestions.

Also, if you are planning on transferring, <a href=“UC Transfers - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/</a> is a great forum for questions!

@luckie1367 gave you the answers you need, @Alpinestars. :)

There are plenty of places to get textbooks that are cheap and high-quality. Luckie mentioned A&R, which is across the street from SMC. If you prefer to shop online, campusbooks.com can give you the best prices for the books you’re looking for. Just enter your book’s name and it will give you different prices from different vendors. I’ve saved a lot of money thanks to this website.

Oh, and as luckie said, this is a great forum to have your questions answered. Don’t hesitate to ask us for help with the transferring process. :)
