It is positioning itself to put up some stiff competition to the others on the market. The specs are impressive and it is selling on its own OnePlus.net website, by invitation only or some special days (like today). The phones are a fraction of a price of smart phones with similar specifications and are android and will run on Tmobile or AT&T or contract carriers that use those networks. The 16gb phone is $299 and the 64gb phone is $349. Shipping is an extra charge (under $19 for shipping 3 phones to one address). It’s being sold worldwide and works on many networks in other countries–sold unlocked from the China manufacturer.
Anyway, our S recommended it and he, D, H & I have just purchased them online today and will see how it goes. The reviews are quite encouraging and positive and we were planning to switch from Sprint to Tmobile anyway, and will see how it goes.
Anyone with any experience? I expect some of the intrepid families out in CC have knowledge and/or experience of these phones. Thanks!
It is compatible with all of T-mobile’s unique frequencies. One thing you will not get with an unlocked phone like this is WiFi-Calling. That is something I find VERY helpful at times. If you have a wifi connection anywhere on earth, your Tmobile phone will make and receive calls/send and receive texts as if you were on their network at home. It also provides coverage when you have no signal. It comes in handy.
You can get wifi, just not tmobile wifi calling because tmobile will only put it on THEIR phones that THEY sell. This phone is independent and sold directly from the manufacturer, NOT tmobile. I believe there are some “hacks” that folks can do if they want to do wifi calling (I have never done wifi calling, so doubt I will miss it).
People have not had trouble using their wifi with this phone, just not the proprietary wifi calling and messaging program in phones sold ONLY by Tmobile.
“So this phone cannot get a wifi connection? It’s all on your data?”
No, it can. Can surf, texts, etc. just fine. Can’t do phone calls on wifi like other T-mobile phones do (this is a T-mobile signature feature, apparently), so you do not use your cellular minutes or data:
I think it would make a difference to me whether or not I was able to send & retrieve documents easily to the cloud that syncs my tablet & laptop.
But if that was a go, then it sounds like a good deal.
Plus Im hearing mixed on the camera.
I realize this is the parent forum, but I couldn’t help but click on this thread when I saw it on “Latest Posts.”
Anyways, with regard to the One Plus One phone…
The phone is great!
I bought the phone for my father (I am still envious, since I had done so much research on it myself), and he absolutely loves it. The screen is a tad big if you have small hands, since it has a beautiful 6" screen. However, a benefit to the large screen size, especially for my father’s ailing eyes, is that he is able to see apps, icons, etc. more clearly. The colors are vivid, the battery life relatively good (compared to my own Nexus 5), and the one-of-a-kind Cyanogen-mod ROM that is preloaded on the phone is amazing. It also comes with a custom charger, colored red and white, which charges the phone very quickly (around an hour).
I bought my father the $350 version, and he will never, ever run out of space.
Especially since it costs somewhere in the $500-700 for top-of-the-line smartphones, this phone is a steal!
My sister’s iPhone screen just cracked, and my father is planning on buying her a One Plus One, purely because it is half the price and arguably just as good, if not better. I would recommend this phone to anyone and everyone.
Anyways, just my two cents. I am sure you and your family will love the One Plus One experience!
Yes, our S who is into gadgets was the one who selected this phone for us and we have been pretty pleased with all the reviews we have read. $349 is really a good price for the 64gb memory and everything else the phone comes with. The processing speed is said to be very fast and battery life & charging is supposed to be great too.
We are all getting the phone together–me, S, D and H, so we can ask the kids and H for tech support.
T-mobile offers a cell signal booster to customers who get poor signal in the house, so the phone might still be an option, @AllThisIsNewToMe. The cell-fi signal booster appears to be different from the Asus router they offer to improve wifi calling. You have to have at least 1bar of signal somewhere in your house to use it. You can find it on their website.
A Chinese owned company selling made in China phones…not for me. I know I still, buy too much made in China , , but at least the parent company isn’t Chinese owned. Go ahead, send more of your $ over there. I’m sure the quality is great…I guess the long run will tell. Good luck calling for customer service. (Not that any company has great cust service)
My moto x was assembled in Texas. I liked that. Moto x are well priced also. They also have the moto g which may have all the features that many seniors would need, at lower price than the moto x.
I don’t know anything about the one plus one. It may be a great phone. I just try not to buy pure Chinese products when I can avoid it. I won’t even buy Chinese dog treats or toys.
Well, the phone arrived and we are still trying to decide whether we like it. Time will tell. My understanding is that the iPhone is made in China too, although of course Applie is a US company.
I have not used Apple customer service much and they weren’t very helpful when I have tried using them so don’t expect that it can be much worse. Have read that folks have online customer support or via phone. That’s similar to what I’ve had with other phones. I have not needed much customer support for most of our electronics. Buying the OnePlus One was an experiment. We will have to see how it goes. We put S in charge of choosing our phones and this is what he selected. We just received these phones yesterday.
