New Student Freshman orientation

Continuing the discussion from Indiana University Bloomington Class of 2028 Official RD Thread:

Question about IU freshman orientation. Do OOS kids go, or do they do it all online?

Spoke to IU yesterday regarding your exact question as we’re OOS as well. Red carpet days and any other new student events are not really necessary unless first time on campus, however, New Student Orientation (NSO) is highly recommended plus, this is when each incoming student meets with advisor and schedules 1st semester classes.

Important that math and language placement tests are completed at least 72 hours prior to meeting with advisor so they know what level to place each student in for those 1st year classes. Placement exams are accessed thru enrollment steps, sent thru email but I am sure you can access via website as well. Invites for NSO will be sent to student’s one.IU account via email, so student should begin checking in early April.

While actual dates are not published, it will run from June 3rd thru July 26th, and it is a 2-day event with separate tracks for students and parents. Students will meet with advisors on day 2. Also, students will apparently sleep in dorm on night 1 to get the college dorm experience.

Thanks for this. Do most parents go to nso?

Not sure. I had a friend tell me it’s not worth it for parents but he and his wife both went to IU and their daughter was also very familiar with the school. We are planning to go but it’s an 8-hour drive from Atlanta, so not that big of a deal.

Yes, most parents go. They have a parent track that runs alongside the student track.

Just a tip - they don’t open up more classes as time goes on, so the earlier orientations get first pick of courses.

we did too

Hoping this is the correct forum to ask these freshman-related questions:

  1. Is there any studying that needs to be done for Placement exams for Math and English (New Student Orientation)? What is covered in those exams?
  2. Is it recommended to take Finite / Calculus during summer (before starting school in Fall)? If yes, will any community college do or it has be an Indiana specific-one?

Thanks!

You can use this website to see what classes will transfer from your local community college. It’s going to depend on both the school you are trying to transfer credits from and your major/school at IU as to what transfers. https://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/

I wouldn’t study for the placement exams - why would you want to be put in a course that’s higher than you can handle? I’m a parent so don’t know what is on them exactly.

Based on what I have read, you don’t want to study or prep for placement exams in math and language. Best to take the competency tests without so advisor can get an accurate picture and place you in the proper class. In other words, if you prep and do really well they will place you in a higher level class and the pace could be too fast for your actual competency.

Regarding finite math, if interested in Kelley Standard admit route, it looks like that class is no longer required during your first year, so there shouldn’t be any value in taking it prior to arrival. That said, you do need to have it completed by end of 1st semester of your sophomore year as it’s a prerequisite for 2nd semester stats class I believe and taking summer after 1st year at community college would make sense unless math is your strength.

Best to review standard admit path for Kelley on IU website as it should confirm what I described above regarding finite math.

Thanks. Agree on DS not studying for the placement exams.

About your response about finite Math, apologies if my questions are too basic… …

DS is a direct admit to Kelley, interested in MIS. I looked at the I-Core pre-requirements here, and it says Finite Math and Calculus are required to be completed in the first year. Am I reading this correctly?

You are reading it correctly although it does differ from what I read on standard admit process. What makes it confusing is Kelley has mentioned direct admits, and standard admit candidates take the exact same curriculum.

MATH118 is Finite, MATH119 is Calculus. Below states MATH118 can be taken by 1st semester of 2nd year. Probably worth both of us calling to get confirmation. It could be the Direct Admit 1st year curriculum may not have been updated while standard admit has been updated or vice versa.

Hello all

I am just trying to confirm if all Freshmen (starting in the Fall of 2024) have to take both the Math and Foreign language placement tests? I understand Math is one of the required courses but there is no Foreign Language course in the Degree map (BS in Finance) so why do we need a foreign language placement test?

A lot of info is very confusing.

Thanks for reading

Finite will NOT be required for incoming freshman THIS YEAR for Kelley. Students can complete the math by taking EITHER finite or calc. There’s been some discussion of this on the other chains.

Also if you join the FB for IU Kelley parents class of 27 & 28, it has been confirmed there as well.

They are creating a new finite class that is specifically for the business and public policy school students. Much like how Kelley has its own Econ class just for business students. There will only be limited seats for this new class this year, so it is not a requirement for the incoming class.

It is my understanding that all students have to fulfill Gen Ed requirements. One of those requirements is world languages/world cultures. I think you can fulfill that requirement with a high school language sequence, AP exam or a placement test. If you don’t fulfill that requirement on the way in, you could fulfill it by taking language classes (in which case you need a placement to be put in the right level) or classes about world culture.

So my guess is that you don’t need to take the test if your kid is not going to take more of the same language at IU—either because they already have the WL/WC fulfilled w AP credits or because they are going to take culture classes.

If any college offers a more in-depth orientation session, I always recommend doing so, and IU has an excellent program: Intensive First-Year Seminars (IFS). It’s a 3-week program in the summer before the fall semester starts, and it’s a great way to adjust to the campus.

Yes, everyone has to take the foreign language placement test.

Why doesn’t anyone talk about taking Math 201 (Brief Calculus) from Ivy Tech (summer online course) instead of Math 211 (Calculus I)? Wouldn’t 201 be an easier course than 211 since it’s an introductory course? Please let me know your thoughts so we can make the correct decision. TIA.

As per IU Credit Transfer Services, both courses can be transferred over to satisfy IU’s I-Core pre-reqs.
