Not expecting anyone to post they are going to a big bash!
Any NY’s activities /food planned?
I’ll admit to not really thinking about it. If anything it will be low key and not fancy in any way! Maybe some appetizer menu.

We’re going skiing. NYE we will hang in the hotel room, do a virtual paint n’ sip, order food (probably pizza), play games, and watch the ball drop. NYD is skiing and football (with takeout for dinner).
A couple, good friends of ours, are coming over in the afternoon. We will go for a walk and then talk outdoors, next to our tower heater. They invited us to their house to play games, but I said I wasn’t comfortable being indoors, and they accepted my alternative suggestion. The wife is an RN and their daughter had COVID, but they are not as strict as we are, surprisingly. Oh, and I forgot her brother had it VERY seriously and was hospitalized twice (he’s disabled and lives in a nursing home). Hard to understand people.
We were hoping to go skiing, but D just committed to working NYE so that’s out. We are usually low key, a nice dinner followed by games and movies, and I guess that’s what this year will be as well. We just got a new game out of the library - Trapwords. It’s pretty easy and a lot of fun! If anyone has some great movies to recommend, I’m all ears.
Usually, we go out for a very early steak dinner, DH hosts a stage for the local First Night event, and DD and I watch a movie at home. This is the first time in over a decade we will ring in the new year as a family since First Night is cancelled. Looking at a nice take out dinner and playing a game or watching a movie. NYD dinner is always Hoppin’ John for good luck. Here’s hoping 2021 is better than 2020!
I come from a southern family, so it’s black eye peas with everything come the New Year!
We are having a zoom “party” with friends. Everyone is dressing up and doing heavy appetizers in their own homes.
A transplanted southerner here. New Year’s Eve will be a quiet night in with a good movie and takeout. For New Year’s Day, I’ll make black-eyed peas and collard greens for luck in the new year. There will also be heavy appetizers and lots of cheering for my hometown football team. Roll Tide!
I’m sure we will check in with son, whose apartment now overlooks Seattle Center but their fireworks will only be virtual this year.
We are planning a Rib Roast with Yorkshire Pudding (Lawry’s recipes in honor of the Chicago location closing) and Julia Child’s Floating Island with a split of Champagne. If we can track down chicken livers, I will make a pate (not chopped liver!). Husband will want to watch the NYE ball drop.
On NY night, I will watch the new Doctor Who special. Husband will undoubtably watch whatever sports are on.
I hot nothing. Ds2 is here, but I imagine he is hoping for a backyard hang with friends as two of his bffs are leaving town the next day.
We’re cutting down a dead buckeye tree, figured we may as well make an event of it.
We’re transplants to PA and fell in love with the local tradition of pork and sauerkraut for New Year’s Day, so it’s already in my fridge waiting for the slow cooker. Potatoes and green beans from our garden get added to the mix. We’re all drooling…
H is from the south so we’ll also have their customary black eyed peas.
Oldest and middle are with us for a few weeks, so some garden green peas will also be on the menu.
We play games New Year’s Eve, then 15 minutes before midnight we turn on the TV to watch the NYC ball drop and drink bubbly. Then we sit around our Christmas tree and talk about everything that happened in the past year plus everything we hope will happen in the next year.
I love the tradition - absolutely nothing changes this year due to Covid for us and New Year’s.
Yes , DH’S NYD custom, black eyed peas, for luck in the new year. But on my family side, it’s always “pork, for prosperity.”
No other plans. D1 told me they had reservations at a local restaurant but canceled out of caution. (She’s super vigilant.) But sometimes, just thinking about a plan gives us that moment of feeling free of the virus concerns.
On New Year’s Eve, we will do our regular Thursday 6pm zoom call with friends (usually 3 other couples but this week one has family plans). Last week we decided to do appetizers and cocktails or champagne from each of our homes… have a “party”.
NYE will be in stages since S1, DIL & GS are with us. First apps & celebration with GS before he goes to bed at 7pm, then heavy apps and a great dessert for the grown-ups before watching the ball drop (however they’re doing it). We have had a huge NYD open house for about the past 25 years and I make loads of chili and fixings. Obviously not happening this year, though I am tempted to do drop-offs for some of my most ardent chili fans. Most likely we will have a quiet day watching football and eating a much smaller batch of chili.
Champagne and television, as per usual.
A neighbor gave us a small box of birdseed with a note saying it’s traditional to sprinkle it on the doorstep for good luck in the new year.
We may do that while starting the new tradition of opening the door to make sure the old year is well and truly departed!
Well, we are ordering Peking duck for tomorrow, 12/30 because we think it’s more likely we will get food in a timely fashion than if we chose 12/31 or 1/1. We also plan to get some takeout vegetarian monk’s food on 12/31, as soon as they finish making it at 4pm.
We will likely eat leftovers for several days after we have our 12/30 feast.
@Creekland we’re PA transplants in the south; I have the pork and sauerkraut thing down pat, but I’m a little shaky on this whole black eyed pea thing. Hopefully they all taste great together; I’m not taking any chances with 2021
We decided to start early and hit the seafood market before it gets mobbed.
Today we got 2 big lobster tails, some nice shrimp, and 2 pounds of Maryland lump crab.
We had shrimp and lobster tonight. Tomorrow we will likely have crab dip and or crab imperial. Thursday we will have the rest of the crab if we don’t use it all tomorrow. Since it’s just the two of us here we figured it really doesn’t matter which day(s) we eat special meals.
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten black eyed peas. How do you serve them??
