I cook black-eyed peas low and slow with a ham hock and okra until they’re tender but not mushy and serve them with cornbread.
Usually we go to our friends’ house for a NYE party, but this year no party, so the four of us are having cheese fondue and Dungeness crab if I can get it. Then for NYD, I will do a bagel board with egg salad, lox, all the fixings, maybe smoked trout spread, coffee cake, fruit, and breakfast sausages. And plenty of coffee. It’s just the four of us, but I love going overboard for holidays.
We do NOT put the black eyed peas into the pork and sauerkraut. H cooks them on the side on the stove (after soaking them the night before). He tosses in some meat for flavor, usually salt pork or kielbasa or something. I eat some, but they are certainly not my favorite bean. He eats more, as does one of our sons.
My wife retires on NYE. We have something really wonderful to celebrate after an awful 2020! We are going to hang out at home, drink to excess, and our son is going to make shrimp scampi for dinner, then assuming no hangover, take off for the weekend to our home in ski country.
Best way to eat black eyed peas:
My recipe
Cook Bacon and onion. Stir in cooked rice, the canned black eyed peas (the type with jalepenos). After it sits a while add Cajun hot sauce to taste
I retired this summer, and it is the first time in 15 years that I’m not stuck in a job with Year End support work. (In recent years done from home, but in first years at that job my coworkers and I were at the office until midnight).
This year it would have been REALLY nice to have the ability to go to a party or out to dinner on New Years Eve (or Dec 30th - that’s what hubby and I used to do for many years before the ugly job, to avoid the crowds). But… I am glad to be safe and comfortable, trying not be annoyed by the Small Stuff.
DH always used canned Black Eyed Peas. Yes to adding a hock, but also some canned tomatoes and something spicy, like a few shots of hot sauce.
Nothing haute cuisine about BEP. Just down home comfort food. And a whopping big tradition, among some families.
Working a 24 hour shift. NYE is usually a busy day/night, anticipating this will even be
busier with covid calls increasing. Stay safe all, Healthy & Happy 2021
Lol; don’t worry I plan on cooking them separate with a ham hock
Canned is fine if you prefer, but we definitely like the taste and texture of starting with dried beans.
If one likes softer (or in our thoughts, mushier) beans, go with canned. I’m northern and H converted to northern tastes in preferring less well done with everything (meat, veggies, beans). His dad will still cook anything fresh until it has the “canned” texture for things he eats. I gag, esp with peas, broccoli, and asparagus. When we’re with him his foods get cooked longer than ours.
We normally go to dinner with friends (one other couple) but not this year. The plan is to zoom at 8 PM and we can hang out virtually and with appropriate drinks (my last before my planned “dry January”). We’ll also play a few games of online euchre together.
I usually take my decorations down on New Year’s Day while watching the Rose Bowl Parade (which I love). No parade but I still have to take down the decs! Planning to run and will stream a NYD yoga class in the afternoon. It’s the first time in over 20 years that my friend won’t be able to host her annual NYD party.
Never did a Prime Rib before, going to give it a shot this year, since we will be home.
We are going to make crispy beef tacos. It’s one of our favorite treat meals. It will just be two of us and I’m sure we won’t make it till midnight.
No plans for New Year’s Day. We normally go to a open house at a neighbor and that won’t be happening. Maybe we will take a drive up and see the inlaws outside. Another option will be a walk on the beach.
Wedge salad with fried shallots and pancetta, king crab legs with drawn butter and a nice Sancerre to drink. Champaign toast for sure.
Quiet New Years here…making Veal Milanese with Arugula Salad for dinner. We’ll have champagne at midnight and hopefully talk to/zoom with the kids. On New Years Day…well H as well as S are Notre Dame alums so we’ll be watching the game and cheering them on.
Sigh.
Just saying: we never take down Christmas decorations in January. I like to wait til Easter. Why not?
Two years ago, SIL was so proud that he’d taken down our artificial tree in late Feb or so. He couldn’t understand why I wasn’t excited.
We will go skiing then come home and have a spiral cut ham waiting. Just have to whip up some mashed potato’s and a salad or veggie. The bone goes into split pea soup after the New Year.
I am going here with my sister in law for New Year’s Eve lunch, and having Champagne and lobster by myself to watch the ball drop.
I made a lentil vegatable soup with our Christmas ham bone. We really liked it.
Lentil vegetable sounds good too!
