New years eve/day food/activities

I am not much of a cook. I can only manage very simple recipes - grilling, baking with olive oil and garlic.

We are having an outdoor toast at 5 to say goodbye to 2020 with our neighbors.

We are having a comfort food dinner…meat loaf, rice and green beans. Banana cream pie for dessert at some point.

We are doing a zoom call with our usual NYE group at about 11:30. I sort of hope they make it earlier!

New Years Day, we will make waffles or french toast brunch.

We will call our son, but our daughter is working that night.

The was a special on Prime Rib before Christmas but you had to buy the whole thing that was in a vacuum sealed bag. It was HUGE, like the rack of ribs Fred Flintstone got at the drive-in. So we cut it in half and saved half. My brother just asked for it for Saturday, so out of the freezer it came tonight and we’ll have part deux on Saturday.

It was so much meat, but we did manage to finish it off. This time I think I’ll make easier veggies and potatoes, and get the Ed McCaffrey Horsey sauce.

This week there is a sale on shrimp at the store so probably have that either Thurs or Friday.

This eating has got to stop!

Pregnant DD1 and her husband will be visiting so we will have our Christmas dinner number 2 on NYD. Lasagna, salad, Italian Greens (escarole sauteed with potatoes, ham, garlic, olive oil, and cherry peppers), garlic and regular Italian bread from the bakery. For dessert it will be Candy Bar cake (a trifle of chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, toffee bits, and real whipped cream). I will be making non-dairy versions of the lasagna and dessert for my DD2. Probably a cheese plate and some shrimp cocktail to snack on as well while we do gifts.

NYE is prepping and cleaning. We never make a big deal of it but I will probably throw together some homemade buffalo wings in my air fryer (the best way to make them imo). Not sure what else we might have. I am nodding off by 8 pm lately so seeing midnight is not likely.

We always make Texas Caviar and serve with tortilla chips to get our black eyed peas in. Wishing everyone extra good luck in 2021!

Ever since I turned Episcopalian, I celebrate all twelve days of Christmas. Best move I ever made.

Collards and black-eyed peas, but cooking them tomorrow. They had fresh black-eyed peas in the produce section this morning, so I bought them. Collards in a bag already chopped. The regular collards were all gone, and I did not feel like going out to the farmers’ market on the highway. I am in North Carolina.

@momofthreeboys - The “Lentil Vegetable” soup I mentioned above is actually titled “Lentil Ham Soup”. It calls for 1.5c cubed ham, but we also threw in our ham bone.

We cooked it much longer than directed in recipe to make the lentils tenders (possibly due to our high altitude)

It was a good way to use up some of the Christmas ham. Joy of Cooking defines Eternity as “two people and a ham”. (We actually had our daughter with us too and sent leftovers home with her. Still had tons of ham left, and much of it had to go to the freezer.)

Pickled herring in wine sauce on NYE! It’s a family tradition and a great snack.

I got lazy today. Instead of making enough dumplings for a small army as I usually did, I made a steakhouse dinner: grilled NY strip with mashed potatoes and an iceberg lettuce/prosciutto/blue cheese wedge salad. Watching CNN. Happy New Year US!!

We don’t have any NYE tradition for dinner. Tonight we had takeout pizza mostly because it was easy and different than Christmas dinner turkey leftovers. Tomorrow we will have our typical New Year’s dinner of ham, black-eyed peas, collard greens and corn bread. We don’t usually have any special dessert–by now we’ve had our fill of sweets, although we still have leftover Christmas goodies. Pretty soon we will FaceTime with our son and play some online games while we wait for midnight, if I can make it that long!

NYE was another quiet day for us. We spent most of it on calls with family and the rest in the kitchen making a nice dinner of grilled rack of lamb and lobster mashed potatoes:

We finished it off with French Silk Pie:

This morning, we had a braided brunch loaf, basically just an egg scramble wrapped in puff pastry. I refrigerated the scramble last night and put it together this morning. It’s very easy but looks like you put a lot of effort into it:

We usually spend the 1st taking down Christmas decorations, but we’ll probably hold off until tomorrow as I just don’t feel like it today.

We just finished the last of the seafood from our run earlier in the week last night. Had crab dip with double crab. Had some veggies with hummus as an appetizer, and called that dinner.
Since I picked up groceries this morning and they still had some, we got 4 smaller lobster tails for dinner tonight. That will be the end of our seafood extravaganza.

Never enough seafood.

Yesterday we skied during the day. Got takeout for dinner, shrimp. Supported one of our local restaurants. It was surprisingly delicious. It’s a restaurant that we frequent but never think it has the best food. Maybe the lack of take out?

My neighbor brought over cookies for dessert. My husband helped clear out their driveway, it was unnecessary as it was truly no big deal. But I think she likes to bake and who needs a bunch of baked goods when you aren’t going anywhere!

We took off yesterday and are working a full day today. We LOVE working on holidays - it’s so quiet! No phone calls or other interruptions.

Jealous of all the seafood especially lobster. I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever had lobster at home.

We are working hard in the house today getting ready for a painting project tomorrow (ugh, I’d also love to get the Christmas stuff down but it may have to wait) so while I made buttermilk waffles for breakfast, it’s leftovers for snacks during the day and maybe just some simple nachos for dinner.

We paid tribute to Julia Child (Chicken Liver Pate and Floating Island) and Lawry’s Prime Rib (Prime Rib and Yorkshire Pudding).
