New Years' Resolutions

Anyone else making them?

Mine are:
Keep a food journal to help me eat healthier.
Work out 3 days per week.
Say a prayer every morning.

What are yours?

I don’t generally make resolutions, and when I do it is usually at my birthday instead of at New Year’s, just to avoid the stress and hoopla of New Year’s resolutions.

That said, about 3 weeks ago I got tired of being over weight and went on a diet then and there, right in the middle of the holiday season.

I have lost 5 lbs so far, so it is a good enough beginning to keep it up in the new year and habits have started to be formed.

Similar to bajamm, I started working with a trainer in mid-November. I haven’t lost any weight but I am definitely stronger. I hate to think what the Y will be like next week!

I just retired so I finally have the time during the day to go to the gym. Yeah, yeah, I know everybody says they’re going to do it, but I really mean it. It will add structure to my days and give me a reason to keep getting up early. I’m actually looking forward to it! I’m going to start the 2nd week of January after all the holiday company is gone and my life gets back to some semblance of normal.

Oh, and the discussion about the FitBit has me intrigued, too. I think I’ll get one!

I am committed to a major DE-CLUTTER in 2013. We’ve lived in our current home 12 years – the longest of any of our residences – and so have not had that getting-ready-to-move-yard-sale-big clear-out. It’s past time. Plus I am really ready to simplify and get rid of STUFF. Now if only I could convince H… :)

Also gonna put that new FitBit to good use!

The one resolution I’ve shared with the family is to take more pictures! I realize that I took far more while the kids were little, but the last few years are sort of meager, except for the big events like graduations or weddings. I just want everyday stuff, and it’s so easy with everything digital, there’s no excuse not to.

I resolve to be more “present” - i.e. not always be checking my electronics when I am with other people or out somewhere. I may need to reach down to the floor and touch it to remind myself about this.

I am on a September 30 fiscal year.

I make resolutions 3 times each year–January, July (my birthday), and September (former teacher). Two years ago, I managed to keep my exercise resolution for a full 12 months. I am going to try that again with modifications. I am afraid that I have a bit of OCD and if I don’t get off to a good start, I give up. I think that I will try something new this year; I am going to make a list of ALL the things that I want to do or change and see how long I can maintain each thing.

FallGirl – thank you for starting this thread! I was just thinking about the same thing.

My New Year’s resolution is simple: Don’t. Waste. Time.

Which means, for me: less time on the internet reading all the “news”; less time checking emails (which I could check once an hour and get the same info); less time on CC (sob – there must be a 12 Step program for people like me).

I used to think Time was a road that stretched in front of me, into infinity. Now I realize there is only so much time in a day, only so many days in a month – you get the idea.

Best wishes to all my CC friends for a happy and healthy New Year.

This year, my NY’s resolution is to try something new every month. January will be a painting class with a good friend. We stumbled upon a studio that gives weekly painting classes and anyone and everyone! I’ve always wanted to paint. New month, I will try a few golf lessons. If I can hit the ball straight, I may be able to play with DH! That’s it so far.

What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

Mods, can you merge these threads?

I highly, highly recommend the “My Plate” app by Live Strong. Very user friendly. The database of what foods are already in there is amazing!(we’re talking thousands of brand name and restaurant items in addition to whole unprocessed foods). You can also customize. You can add exercise if you want (I don’t, shame on me), and track your weight. The one with no ads was 99c when I got it (very worth it). It can sync with the desktop version if you prefer to track things on your desktop when at home and work and use the app on your smartphone while out. I know there are a lot of other people who have used this on the “Weight Loss for Dummies” thread. I am no longer loosing weight but like the occasional accountability for healthy eating.

Start my Christmas cards before Dec. 31. :p

Thanks, blue iguana I might try that. I lost some weight in the last 6 months so I am really not trying to lose more as much as I am trying to eat fewer carbs and less sugar.

1) Lose the last 25-30 and really focus on staying healthy.
2) Spend more time helping my parents.
3) Get my fabric art rolling again.
4) Organize the pictures, papers, etc. that have been sitting around for 20+ years until I had the time.
5) Write my will. It’s WAY past time.

I’ve read a huge amount of research (I’m a data hound) on how to make changes work. Big resolutions (“I’m losing 50 pounds this year!”) are much less successful, in general, than little bitty changes. So my big resolution this year is to make one small positive change every week…

I had a long talk about healthy eating with DH recently, and he agreed to eat his high calorie cyclist’s meal-of-the-day (the one with rice and bread and dessert) at work, instead of at home. He also agreed not to complain when I served a smaller, healthier dinner. I made an enormous pot of black bean and turkey chili; it’s in the freezer (in dinner-size portions) for dinners when I don’t want to cook. Today I’m making an enormous pot of vegetable soup so we don’t get completely bored of the chili. Since I will always take the easiest option when making dinner, and pulling something out of the freezer is always easier than cooking or going out, this strategy has been working well for me.

I am not trying to eat less of any one thing; I am trying to eat more fruits and vegetables and less of every thing else. The nutritionist I saw recommended using smaller plates. That has really helped. Writing down everything I eat helps, when I’m not too embarrassed to admit to myself what I ate.

Last summer, I read some research on positive statements. Many people have found reading a positive goal every morning helps them achieve the goal. My statement says “I will lose weight easily because I am eating less and walking the dogs twice a day.” I put it on a sticky note on my computer screen.

Merger of two resolution threads done as requested.
**Happy New Year **and best wishes for successful resolutions!

Lose 4 pounds.
declutter, one closet or drawer at a time.
exercise more
Become a better bookkeeper
replace driveway and patio, and stop sweating the 25 y.o. kitchen; let the next owner do that to their taste
worry less about the kid and his lack of communication with me (he’s got his s/o to talk to daily).

have more fun
plan a vacation
continue to appreciate my friends, and try to ignore the slights from family

Most of mine are repetitive, but I figure if I write them here, they will remain goals.

My resolution for 2013 will be to read 100 books, (which i have done for the past 2 years)
