Newborn baby and eyes

My D and SIL have new beautiful baby boy.
He clearly looks like our adopted South Korean S.
Neither she nor her H have any Asian bloodline that we know about.
Even D thinks he looks like her adopted brother.
Can someone, kindly, shed some light on this?
He is just lovely! We all adore him. His eyes are gorgeous.
So just wondering why he looks like her adopted brother.

I think what I meant to ask is why do his eyes have a deep fold.
S and his son have deep folds.
D and SIL do not.
Educating myself on line right now.

I suspect he’ll grow out of it. But it does remind me of Dr Suezz’s story about the elephant and Maisie.

My son’s former g/f for many years was Korean, and i honestly looked forward to seeing their children, whom I knew would be gorgeous.

Congratulations. He is a newborn…give him a few weeks! You will see lots of changes.

Thanks
Everything I read says the same-- could all change as his nose develops.
He was 9.5 lbs 23 inches at birth. So no little guy.
I think having an Asian S uncle and this lovely baby look so much alike is what caught our attention.
That said, when S was growing up friends would remark on how much he looked like his Caucasian dad.
We all got a good chuckle at this.

I visit newborns every week while volunteering. Lots of newborns do not fully open their eyes for the first few days.

What do you mean by deep folds? Several of my family members have deep folds over their eyes (you can only see a sliver of their eyelid), and we have no Asian heritage that we know of either.

Congratulations on the birth of your healthy grandson!

I have an adopted child, so have been around a lot of white parents with Asian children. There are always comments that ‘she looks just like Uncle Harry, isn’t that amazing!’ or ‘I can’t believe her chin is just like Grandma’s.’

It’s is either that many races share traits, or these people are delusional. I tend toward the delusional side.

Re post #8, I actually think many races share traits.

Anyone here familiar with David Bromstad? I would have guessed he had some Asian ancestry due to his eye shape, but he is not Asian at all.

^^ Ha, @uwalummom! My family still makes fun of me for assuming that David Bromstad was Asian! I never would have guessed he was a native Minnesotan of Norwegian/German/Swedish descent.

Or he could have Asian or Indigenous Peoples lineage and not even now it - just saying…

Lots of people from Central and South America look very Asian to me. (At least I assume that’s where they’re from when they start speaking Spanish!) PBS did a thing years ago where you sorted people by races. It was almost impossible: https://www.pbs.org/race/002_SortingPeople/002_01-sort.htm

In any event my kids eyes looked completely different within a month or two.

“Lots of people from Central and South America look very Asian to me.”

Very true. That’s why I mentioned Indigenous Peoples. Go back far enough in one’s ancestry and there are all kinds of genetic links. Sometimes you don’t need to go back that far. Some people aren’t always honest or even know about their familial connections.

When my D was little I had many (MANY) people tell me how much she looked EXACTLY like “her daddy” - my dear friend, who I’d known for years, who happened to be a gay man…not my Ds “daddy” - I never really knew what others saw that made them say that. Whatever. It used to make my friend laugh and often he would reply “I’ve been saying it for months!”

She DOES however look EXACTLY like her 2nd cousin, who is 20 years older than my D, and they had not met until my D was almost 10. They even have identical likes, and mannerisms.

Your poor D. That is one big baby.

Our youngest was 9lb 13oz and his face was super puffy those first few days. He looks Inuit in his baby picture. He is less than 10% NA, so there is a bit of that, but a very normal looking white kid now.

A friend of mine’s younger son looked EXACTLY like her gay ex-husband’s boyfriend. People were frequently confused.

There are a substantial number of Peruvians of Japanese descent, including former President Alberto Fujimori.

I have deep folds. Just age.

Thanks everyone. Yes, He is a big baby. He held his head up within hours. All newborn clothes must
be returned or passed on. He is pretty mellow in general and talks rather than cries.
His face is puffy so time will tell on his features. I think what threw us is how he looks like S and G’Son.
We know not to say much as we do not want dad to feel left out. Baby “B” looks like his dad overall.
I think the maternal grandparents will shed some light on this when we see them next week.
Reading about different people and areas of the world that are not specifically of Asian ancestry yet have features we contribute to certain groups has been interesting.

My mother use to tell me that I looked just like my maternal grandmother :-O. She was obese and her mouth turns down when at rest. She had blue grey eyes while the rest of the Italian family had deep brown. As I have aged I do see the resemblance (minus some of the weight). And she was
a talented cook when no one else in the family was and I am that person in this generation. Barely
knew her but always liked her. Maybe telling an eight year old she resembles an obese relative
was not the best thing…
