nitpicky nervous audition protocol question

Do you or do you not shake hands with the college auditioners? (auditors?)

I have my first audition on Saturday and I am so nervous it is sickening. I’m trying to mock-audition the nerves out of myself the next few days with friends and teachers, but still. I would like to have all the protocol stuff settled so I don’t have to worry about it…

I don’t know the answer, Rachel, but I do know someone whose first words at her Guthrie/UMinn audition were: “Oh my god, I forgot deoderant. Do I smell?” She got in. Break a leg.

This is just my advice, and I think, as Gwen stated above, it’s up to the individual. The method that always worked for me was: Say hi (and respond to any how are you’s, or maybe ask one yourself) as you are walking in, go to your mark, introduce yourself and your pieces, and then begin. They may interview your afterwards, so that would be your moment to be more personal, and you could shake hands as you exit.

My D was always told to shake hands if the auditor offers you their hand, but otherwise not to offer yours first. I remember there were some auditors who shook hands with her but I think those were all after interviews.
