All good info but is anyone going to post that did not get accepted?

We are currently appealing our D’s non-selection as finalist. Her GPA is 4.7 weighted,
2360 SAT. She had two Cs - but I think the real problem may have been that we live in Texas (lots of NMSF and lots of very high scorers). It was a numbers game and she lost.

Have not heard about appeal yet, it was devastating at first, although now I have accepted it somewhat. D’s first choice school doesn’t offer NM money anyway, but other schools. i.e. Alabama have already offered full scholarship even without the NMF designation.

Over 90% of semi finalists go on to be finalists. That’s not much of a numbers game. It’s almost certainly because she had two C’s.

For 2012 Texas was in the upper middle of scores with a 219 making the cutoff so I don’t think the PSAT score made the difference. Most likely the 2 C’s…

Ok, unicameral2013, here’s your pound of flesh.

REJECTED, appeal denied. More A’s than B’s, 2 C’s - both 79% semester grades in freshman year. 4.62 weighted GPA. Looks like 2 C’s does you in, no matter what else.

One more “whine” from me: as a teacher (with 24 years experience), I think that it is patently unfair that NMSC equates pre-AP and regular classes by only looking at letter grades. I teach “regular” geometry. I let students redo any paper for full credit, right up until the end of the semester. Quizzes can be corrected for 1/2 credit back. Any test below 70 can be retaken. The focus is getting students a math credit and allowing them to graduate. Even an average student can make an A in my class. None of that is true of the pre-AP class. If NMSC wants to be represented by high-level students, they should be choosing the ones who are taking the most challenging coursework.

fredsfam…I’m sorry. :frowning: I was hoping things would work out for your son.

fredsfam…I agree with you regarding course rigor, and I believe there is a place in the school’s part of the NMSF paperwork package for them to “rate” the student’s course difficulty level relative to other students in that school. Not every school in the country offers AP courses, so I don’t think a student out to be automatically disqualified from consideration based on that. As long as they’ve taken the toughest courses their school offers and met all the other milestones, they should advance.

I’m sorry to hear your S wasn’t selected to advance. I don’t know that NMSC could (or would want to) strictly define a specific number of Cs or Bs/Cs combo that disqualifies a student for advancement since all Cs are not created equal, but unfortunately that means there’s always going to be uncertainty and always going to be deserving students that don’t get to advance. I’m truly sorry your S seems to be in that group this year. Good Luck to him wherever his path now takes him.

Thanks, Wolverine86 and Soonermom95. He’ll be fine; he’s not nearly as disappointed as I am…I’m the one who’s been haunting these boards for the last six years! I appreciate everyone’s info, camaraderie and support, and wish you all the best! Congrats to all the finalists.

Finalist:
Mostly As or A+s, Bs in WHAP, chem and algebra II; GPA is 4.0 weighted, but I don’t think the weighting does much in my school.

MANY B’s, no C’s. 2270 SAT.

Very low A GPA.

Still somehow made National Merit.

I’m confused. I thought selection was based on PSAT. No one is reporting this stat.

Then I thought gpa, SAT and a little something about you made up the rest.

And state is very important. NJ, DC and CA have the highest cutoffs while states like AK, WV and ID have much lower cutoffs. Yet some dont report these stats.

This thread is for people who already made NMSF reporting on getting to the next step- NMF. Once you make NMSF, PSAT score doesn’t matter.

Accepted

PSAT 240
SAT 2340
All As (4.0 uw, not sure weighted but has 10 APs so better weighted)

Do they really look at ECs? His are fine, essay was fine.

The Scholarship money is nice, so we are keeping fingers crossed. It’s not a ton but every little bit helps
