There is an article in SUNY Buffalo’s Spectrum that the School of Nursing is overenrolled as a result of prior freshmen guarantees. They are therefore not accepting any applications for any nursing school students this year and are also eliminating the freshman “guarantee.” In the future, all students will have to competitively apply to the nursing program.

They don’t specifically confirm that they are eliminating the “guarantee” for students who already declared themselves as nursing majors in their applications this cycle, but it sure looks like it.

Yes they are eliminating the guarantee It’s rough at UB right now. The management program is recommending summer classes because they won’t have enough courses to graduate if you don’t

I’m glad I’ll be done when I am. UB was already overcrowded, so they did the logical thing and increased enrollment and decrease class offerings.

From what I have been hearing, it will be really tough (in the future) to get into the nursing program as well. Sorry to report the bad news. If you are still interested in UB you should still apply regardless. My advice is to use caution though if you are “gung-ho” about me a nurse (I hope you know what I mean when I say this). And just a clarification: two people I know are in the nursing program- they are freshman this year and have already declared it as their major. So, I am pretty sure they are guaranteed a spot. It affects the students who tried to apply this semester and will most likely affect all future years NOT those already in the program (as freshman). Hope this helps.

Confirmed with the School of Nursing - no nursing guarantee anymore for new freshmen.

D is really disappointed. Siblings attend UB, and it had felt very comfortable to her. She was thrilled with the scholarship offer.

D had been willing to gamble on getting a minimum GPA for admission to upper level nursing classes. However, she is NOT willing to gamble on going to a school without any assurance of getting into the nursing program. (Plus, if she has to apply to a general admission nursing program with the admissions criteria that may be required for UB’s nursing program in the future, she might not even choose UB’s program anyway).

D is therefore going to be attending another school in the Fall that has a 0-4 BSN program.

Bringing this thread up again as an acquaintance of mine told me his daughter, after two years and a 3.8 did not get into the nursing program. Hard to believe and it must be so frustrating!
