i am oos and received a likely letter on christmas eve, but have not received a scholarship invite yet, so i am probably not going to get one. Does that mean i am not getting a scholarship, and also at scholarship day do they have like an award ceremony for the scholarships. I know, it is a loaded question

I thought that the scholarship weekend is when they interview you in order to decide which scholarship you will receive. I don’t think there is an award ceremony - I believe they contact you afterwards with the decision. I am making these comments based on the info received during our tour and info session this summer.

just because you didn’t get one doesn’t mean you aren’t going to get some financial aid.

If a scholarship weekend letter has not been received by now, is it likely never coming?

Doesn’t mean anything. My girlfriend got her acceptance and invite to scholarship day the same day if I remember correctly.

If you’re invited to scholarship weekend, does that definitely mean scholarship? Or is it like an application to be reviewed after you’re finished participating in the day’s activities?

You’re notified through the mail as to which scholarship you receive. I think my Scholarship Day was January 31st and I knew by February 5th or something around there.

I’ve been told that the plan is that everyone going to Scholarship Day will receive a scholarship, unless they mess up and are not the person the application readers thought they were. Before the weekend, a few people outside of Admissions will have read your essays twice to be looking for potential Carolina Scholars.

It is entirely possible to receive a merit based financial aid package if you aren’t invited to Scholarship Day. I remember hearing about cases of that last year on this forum. I’m pretty sure, though, that Davie and Carolina Scholars are only picked at the two weekends held during the year.

cloying, Would those people be from the dept. one intends to major in?

You could still get a scholarship.

That being said, I got a likely letter and no scholarship, so don’t assume you’ll get a scholarship just because you got a likely letter.

Maximus, no, it’s Peter Kaufman and maybe a couple other designated people whose names I can’t remember.

At this point do you think all scholarship letters have gone out?

no… we haven’t even gotten decisions by letter yet

maybe since likely letters were sent out in a few separate batches, the scholarship letters will arrive in the same way?
im keeping my fingers crossed!

My son is sitting on two full tuition merit scholarships but has his heart set on UNC. He got the LL but no invitation to SD yet. We’re hoping and waiting patiently. I wonder if this process will be any easier when my daughter applies for 2010.

i am in the same position as you, maximus. i have an offer for a full scholarship, and, according to my GC, should get a very nice offer from our state u, rutgers. there is no doubt in my mind that i want to go to UNC, and if it wasn’t for financial considerations, i would be there in a heartbeat (that is assumingg i get in lol). i was hoping that my likely letter would be a sign that maybe they would consider me for a scholarship but so far nothing
if i do not get merit aid from unc i fear that i will have to go to one of the schools that does give me money- college is just too big of an expense and i just couldnt ask my parents to sacrifice so much money when i could go for free to other relatively good schools

Merit scholarships are pretty hard to come by. Remember they only offer around 150 for an incoming class of very competitive candidates of about 3800+. My brother had an incredible resume, was instate and did not receive anything. He is currently attending UNC. I think if you haven’t received a scholarship letter by now, chances are very slim. UNC is very generous with their financial aid though if you qualify. BTW I got a likely letter and keep rushing to the mailbox for a scholarship letter, but keep being disappointed. It is starting to sink in that they are given to pretty incredible candidates.

snoz,

You might be right, then again I’ve heard that there will be two Scholarship Days one in Jan and one most likely in Feb. We choose to be hopeful. BTW, aren’t there another 60 or so new scholarships that will be available this year?

yep 60 new digs for us to grab… hopefully

Wouldn’t the Feb Scholarship Day be for the regular decision guys not us EA ones?

If you applied/were selected by the adcoms for the Robertson, they have their own Scholarship weekend don’t they? And I think scholarship weekend is only for the finalists.
