Romani, how cold is it where you are? It’s 1 with a windchill of -20 here. It’s like living in Siberia!
It was -11 most of the day with the windchill. Of course, today was the day I had to walk all over campus when every other day of the week is in one building!
I can deal with the freezing temps. Really. I can’t deal with the wind! My teeth hurt… teeth shouldn’t hurt because it’s so cold!
According to the radio on the way home (sports radio so take it with a grain of salt, but they’re remarkably dead-on most of the time), most districts around here developed “cold day” policies after last year. The majority set it to -20 with windchill being the closing temp.
54 colorado- go figure.
It was windy here today, too, but I only had to run from my car to the hair salon and then back to my car after my appt. so I can really complain too much.
I haven’t heard anything about schools in my area but I do remember there have been days that the buses wouldn’t start because it was so cold. Supposed to be going to -6 overnight.
Yea, Colorado has go-figure weather. The other day the low was -5 and the high was 55! A 60 degree change within less than 12 hours!
It’s January- what do you expect up??? One reason we retired south… I recall a 25 degree wind chill for our WI district (the first time I took son to his elementary school as usual but there were no cars/students to be seen) for school cancellations. Students needing to wait for buses in the severe cold was the reason. It was indoor recess if temps were below 20 degrees as I recall. The university shut down for the first time in 25 years due to snow once when I was a UW student. It took a few more decades for another shutdown- when son was there. K-12 schools may be closed but it takes extreme conditions to shut down colleges.
I mean, I’m used to the cold. I’m not used to THIS cold. This temperature shouldn’t exist.
The forecast low tonight is -15 degrees. Wind chill of -35. Our neighborhood is always colder than the official low, too. I told my 16-year-old to dress very warmly in the morning. I think I will check her out before she leaves.
I’ve had kids in the school district since 1997, and I don’t recall them ever closing for cold.
One time back when I was in elementary school…probably 1960 or 1961…we had a day off of,school due to the frigid cold. This was a suburb of Cleveland where the school’s never closed. But this was in the day when everyone walked to school. They deemed it too cold for that. One day off.
We have a 90 minute delay tomorrow morning. It was announced this afternoon. I hope all the parents get the message and don’t send their kids out to the bus at the usual time.
The plumber disconnected the baseboard in my office a few weeks ago. It’s now 40 degrees in there. (And 88 in the attic - sigh.) The rest of the house is about 68.
OTOH it was cold enough last week in NH we got to go pond skating which I love.
NW Ohio with a wind chill warning overnight and part of tomorrow. Most schools have already closed for tomorrow. Wind chill will be around -20 in the morning. December was SO lovely - January is making winter back up!!!
Hawaii has been in the 50s, which is quite chilly for us!
Strange weather most everywhere, but completely normal here in the PNW. Mid forties and overcast. I guess we should enjoy it, as I’m still able to run in that and the kids are on their way down to the hot tub.
@abasket …same here in central IN. 2nd day of school closings the first week back to H.S. Kids don’t want it either as they just had winter break. Now they don’t get Presidents’ Day and have added another day at the end. They really could have used that 3 day weekend in Feb instead.
It is 9 here in Georgia…I don’t mind as long as we don’t get a repeat of the ice storm from last year. @abasket, were you in NW Ohio for the flood, it was about 1979 or so. I was in Findlay and people were fishing off their front porches.
-4 out. Don’t know what it is with wind chill. Looks like all the schools are on a two hour delay. I’m staying in today and watching the tennis from very hot Australia.
I wouldn’t say winter has come early…it is January
.
It is cold here in NoVA. Single digits right now. The 4 inches of snow on Tuesday AM wreaked havoc as VDOT was not prepared and the schools did not close. Nothing plowed, salted, sanded. Rush hour was a nightmare.
My daughter was mad they didn’t close schools yesterday–for our district (WI) it has to be -35 or worse with the wind chill, and it just wasn’t quite “breezy” enough to make the cut. Most of the surrounding districts were closed, and many of her friends from her school were allowed to stay home. She texted me yesterday morning saying “there are only like 10 people in each of my classes!” I felt kind of bad, but not as bad as I did for the kids who don’t have cars and have to ride the bus or walk.
Needless to say she was not excited about going back today…it’s still cold and now we’re expecting snow.
I’m getting ready to leave. We had a 90 minute delay. 90 minutes ago it was -3. Now it’s zero. Big deal. It’s going to be very chilly waiting for buses. I wonder how many kids just won’t be at school?
