Ok I searched about it.I could even get a summer job and earn money. As you said I can only work on campus but for a business major I can work at finance jobs with high salaries for internship. Are you saying the company wont hire me even I being able in summer?
Your ECs are excellent. The point of ECs is to do what is right for you, and do it very well. It is also helpful if your ECs help other people. Let me provide a few examples.
This is a very interesting and somewhat unique EC. I like it.
This is helping other people. This is a very good EC. This also involves math. Again very good. (although âTeachedâ should be âTaughtâ).
Again a very good EC.
You do not need a long list of ECs. What you already have in terms of ECâs is excellent.
You need to think of this from the perspective of what will help your career in Brazil. You should assume that you will not be allowed to stay in the USA after graduating from a university in the USA.
So, what will help your career in Brazil? My guess is a bachelorâs from a very good university in Brazil, optionally with a masters (perhaps MBA) from either a university in Brazil, or in the US, or maybe somewhere else (perhaps Canada?). I would start with doing very well at your university in Brazil.
I believe this too. However, once you have started university at all, it is too late to take the SAT exam. The SAT exam is intended for high school students.
If you complete your bachelorâs degree in Brazil, you might then optionally want to take the GRE before applying to graduate programs outside of Brazil.
By the way, the GRE is a tough exam. However, graduate admissions takes this into account when evaluating scores. They know how well very strong students have done on the GRE. I was, many years ago, a math major at MIT. Among math majors at MIT, there were quite a few students who found that when they had been in high school the math part of the SAT was basically too easy â there was no question that was even remotely challenging. This was not true for the GRE. Even for a math major from MIT the math part of the GRE exam is challenging. That is okay. Perfection on the GRE is not expected and is not required.
Based on your posts I do think that more practice in writing English would be a good idea. However, you have plenty of time to do this.
ECs are less important compared to academics. ECs are useful to the highest ranked universities in the US because they are choosing from among a very long list of students who have pretty much perfect academics, very high test scores, and references that are along the lines of âwalks on water, with ease, while doing calculus in their head, and gets along well with the fishâ. I remember reading one letter of reference that ended with âHe will succeed at anything that he doesâ. They need to find some way to differentiate from among the many very, very strong students who apply. The list of students who are rejected by Harvard, and by Chicago, is amazing.
What Iâm saying is - what matters most are the classes youâve taken and the grades you have.
Without those, you have nothing.
Youâve yet to share anything other than to say - the test youâve taken is harder than the SAT.
Brazilians study in the US - so they all have transcripts, and more.
ECs are a nice to have. Many schools donât look at them.
Are yours great? Probably not. But I canât be sure:
- Some wonât like poker (gambling) - others may see positives.
- I donât know what college level tennis means - are you on a team? Or youâre just really good and play for fun?
- You donât need LORs for your other items. But you do need to ensure you are honest about them - helping low income, finance internship and research.
Those donât get you into college - but if a college is on the fence about letting you in, they could help - if they see them as better as everyone else.
U mention U Chicago. Given youâve shared nothing about your academics, itâs a hard no.
I assume you have academic info - but you are choosing not to share it. Youâll have to with each college.
btw - Chicago doesnât offer a finance major although it offers a business econ major, which may include aspects of finance.
What grades are in your transcript? Universities arenât going to excuse poor grades just because you found you were in the wrong major.
Hey thank you for your time.Precious adviceâ:folded_hands:
. You really are right and I agree with you. I will be attending my classes and trying to get good grades. You really have a ponit on me continuing my studies here in Brazil.I will have to think about it .
Its just that here we dont have a holistic analysis, like nowone asks about my ecs and our barrier of entry to universities is only a highly competitive test. This is why I asked about my Ecs ,since I dont have a counseleur. Even recieving this good advice I am still stuborn and really dream about good oportunities in these top universities which makes a good diference for business major for its networking.
Its to early to say anything but maybe would like quant trading and the top universities have programs for that kind of job. Or even making tech startups these top universities help a lot.
I really need to be outstanding this is why I asked about my Ecs for top universities like MIT Stanford Wharton Uchicago Nyu Uc berkeley .I am assuming I can get good grades.
But Ecs do make a diference for these elite schools right? Are mine enough for them?If not what would be necessary?even if I am not able to acomplish them I would like to know.
Again, what grades have you already received?
Classes in Brazil will start this semester. They will be about acocunting math and law .I dont have grades .The grades I have are from another major and they were not so good becouse I gave up.
I will be applying 2027
You have grades. From engineering. That will be what they look at. And your hs.
ECs can make a difference. Iâm not sure yours will. But they wonât come close to overcoming your engineering grades -which will matter. And perhaps your hs grades.
Why not keep going to close. You are a year from applying. Come back in Sept.
It may be Catawba or Christopher Newport or Coe instead of Chicago (or it may be here) but there will likely be somewhere.
Right now you just have nothing to share info wise. Note that you can be perfect academically and EC wise and still get rejected at Chicago.
But if I show I have changed ,wont this matter? From 60 average to 90?
You will need to submit those grades even if you arenât happy with them.
Man I am already at the top university in Brazil I wont give up for Coe or whatever.Even more for a paid one thats not elite
Being entirely frank, there is no way you should waste time applying to elite US universities with an at-best 80 average (60 freshman year, 100 sophomore year which isnât realistic).
Your options would be to attempt a transfer to a much less exclusive school (as mentioned and you say you arenât interested) or to complete you BA in Brazil and apply for grad school in the US. The grad school option is the only realistic one.
Apply and let us know. We are not Adcoms. Like all, make sure you include assured schools on your application list if you want to study here.
U Chicago is assured for no one, especially those who already performed poorly in college.
But try and see. Itâs the only true way to find out.
Thanks for the advice. But I am a freshman at finance ,wont that be more important?
No.
I wont have a average 80 becouse I wont be coursing engineering
That isnât how it works at US universities. They look at the entire GPA, regardless of major. For grad school, your major GPA will be of importance but not for undergrad transfer.
So if im applying to undergrad transfer its ok?I couldnt understand
