Wouldnāt know because my school hasnāt started yet
Would the finalist and semi-finalists share what kind and level of community service work you do. Iād like to get an idea of whether my D does enough to be competitive. Thanks.
@nw2this I honestly donāt think you have to be amazing in community service/extracurricular to become a finalist. My list was certainly not extensive, the app is also limited as to how many things you can list I believe. Mine was mainly hospital volunteer hours, an independent project, and then just a couple of other projects I picked out from my volunteering clubs that I thought were the most important of the projects we did together as a club. Iād say they take the teacher recommendations into account heavily and the uniqueness of your essay. I am still convinced it is my essay that has gotten me this far, not my volunteering, but only the selection committee really knows.
@nw2this I was selected for the interview. I think that it varies case by case. Personally, I donāt have amazing academic stats, 35 ACT, 3.71 GPA, 5.00 GPA weighted, 25/1000 rank. But, and this is not meant to be braggy, I am just trying to give as thorough an answer as possible, I do a lot of community service that is sincere and not done to for resume building. I have started a non-profit that supplies solar panels and solar lights to people in developing countries, I have 1500(unrelated to the non-profit) service hours, am an eagle scout, got the presidential environmental service award and the IAPD Community Service Award, I am the secretary for the teen executive board at a health education NGO, and volunteer at the hospital. I think that as long as your daughter showed passion for something, she will be alright. Itās not always about how much you do but about how and what you do. I have a friend that got into Harvard because he was a civil war reenactor. Demonstrating a focus and commitment to something you are passionate about offers sincerity and a level of believability to your app and you as an applicant. It shows that this person is not just piling on extra cirriculars for their resume but rather doing these because she/he is passionate and committed to making a difference. Hope this helps.
@vball124
Your stats sound pretty amazing to me and the information helps me to know that my D wouldnāt really be competitive. She is passionate about some causes but hasnāt yet found a way to apply that passion to a community service activity.
I agree with vball124, it is not about having tons of extracurricular, but more about caring about specific few extracurricular and actually showing that passion, which shows up through the amount of time invested into those activities and possibly shows up in essays. It is easy to say you do a bunch of things, but they are likely looking for sincerity more than anything. May I ask what region you are in @vball124 ?
@Runners midwest(I think) chicagoland area
