Northeastern Class of 2013/2017

Being accepted at a school that you cannot afford to attend is almost the same as a rejection. Except in this case you have the added pain of realizing that it is you who has to say no because you cannot afford to go there.

Trying to go to college without loans these days is almost impossible. You need to have a combination of very stong grades and test scores so that you can earn big merit awards and low financial means so that you can get others to pay your way with need based aid. College is expensive and Notheastern is one of the most expensive there is.

Hopefully you have some other options.

Hi Wiggle, agreeing with USNChief - it’s nearly impossible to go to college without loans. That said, I don’t think it could hurt to have a chat with your relative - “just checking in about your offer…” and let them know what Northeastern entails. All they can say is “forget it”, right?

I also think chatting with the financial aid office is a good step. I don’t know about my son’s acceptance to NEU yet (he’s out of the country and made me promise to not look - so far I’ve been good!), but for my older son, we did meet with financial aid offices to talk to them about their decision and see if they’d help in any way. And in a couple of instances, it paid off including the college he’s now attending. My mantra is it never hurts to ask. Also by speaking with them you can find out what they’re basing your financial aid on. Those of us here can only guess at why they’ve given what they’ve given. it’s best to chat with folks who know.

Good luck - I hope you can work it out. Keep us posted!

My son got into the NU-IN program a couple of years ago. He declined the offer to go abroad and instead went to a state school for first semester and then started at Northeastern in january. it was a disaster for him, he was placed in a dorm with juniors, not a freshman in sight. Made it really difficult to meet freshmen when there were none in his dorm and most of the people in his dorm were not interested in socializing with a new freshman.
This international program is just a way for Northeastern to guarantee being able to fill spots in January from students who drop out after Christmas. It insures that they won’t have empty beds.
It was awful for him socially and I can’t even imagine how hard it would be for a girl to be in a similar situation. He left Northeastern after that first semester because he never could feel comfortable. Northeastern made no effort to help move him into a freshman dorm. they said this is the way it is for january admits.
Plus you need to consider that there is no financial aid given during this semester abroad.

Hey guys! I am an international student and I have just been accepted to NEU, I’m so excited! How do I find out if I got a scholarship? This is probably a stupid question but it would be awesome if any of you could help me! Thank youuu:))

Redsoxlover, My D did do the NUin program this past fall and had the exact opposite experience as your son. Perhaps that is why they no longer allow Jan admit without the NU in program. She felt mentored and informed throughout the process. Her move in with a short orientation week in Jan was smooth, with presentations for both parents and new students. She had plenty of NU in students in her dorm, as well as fall admits. They rec’d their housing assignments via email while abroad and some students elected to seek changes at that time and were accommodated. Another friend was placed in a single in IV and was initially pleased, but after arrival found it lonely and switched at that time.
I have an older D who attends American U in DC and they also have a fall program called Washington Mentorship Program which places students in internships in DC with a few for credit classes, with full class schedule starting in the spring. This also generates a lot of opinions on the opportunities, disadvantages etc. While my older D did not participate in this program, one of her friends raved about it and said it gave her a leg up on internships in her subsequent years. So different schools are using various strategies to smooth out fluctuations in enrollment, attendance etc. NUin is one strategy that works for some, but perhaps not all. Gather information and make a decision that is right for the individual.

@franzi94 the scholarship is in the same acceptance letter at least in all the cases that i have heard

Accepted from NY at around 6 PM! Received 18k Dean’s scholarship but only 8.5k in loans  I was hoping I’d get more financial aid or some grants but the problem is that it looks like my family can pay a lot more since both of my parents are remarried so the total income includes all 4 members and it looks a lot higher than the economic standing we are in. I’m hpoing that my parents can make it work and I’m definitely going to apply for some separate scholarships because NE is my second choice behind Duke, which I’m not too optimistic about getting accepted into and it is also very expensive.

@franzi94 and @Camila13

Yep, if you received a scholarship, then on your “Applicant Status Check” page (where it says you’ve been accepted), this should be your first paragraph:

“You stood out among a record-breaking pool of applicants and I am pleased to offer you admission to the 116th entering class at Northeastern University. Also, in recognition of your academic and personal achievements, you have been awarded a scholarship. To view and print your official decision documents, click on the links to the left.”

On the upper-left side of the page, you will also see a blue-text link called “Scholarship Award”, below “Decision Letter” and “Financial Aid”

Hope this helps :)

Accepted into the NU.in program for either England, Costa Rica, or Greece. Sort of bummed because when I read the letter my first thought was Australia if I could go but that’s not for my college.
This was a huge reach school for me and out of 26 people who applied at my school, 3 got in EA (I was deferred), and me along with 2 other people got accepted regular. One other regular got into NU.in as well.

Act: 28 (30 in English, 31 Reading, 26 Math and Science)
GPA: 3.25
ECs: 15 years of dance, 2 years of competitive dance. Decent amount of community service (70+ hours). Cheerleading 2 years. Recently started hockey lessons. Doing the WISE program (internship program for HS seniors). Broadcast production club.

They said I mainly got accepted because of my EC’s and essay. I would’ve been denied unless I got in through NU.in which honestly I’m okay with. It was a reach and I’m happy I have this as an option. However, I don’t think I can afford it. I was given less than 5k in loans/work study and no merit scholarships obviously because my scores were lower than their average. I honestly am not sure I can pay for it at all considering my first year would be 60k. But I’m considering it.

Accepted also into Quinnipiac, Michigan State, Penn State University Park. Denied from Delaware. Waiting on Syracuse and U of Michigan.

And from New York

I was rejected by George Washington U few hours before(one of my dream school), but now it doesn’t seem that “heartbroken”. Despite the fact that the admission of NEU this year is so competitive, I still got in~

I’m now a bit worried about how the major i picked was like in NEU, cuz I heard that it wasn’t that good, though NEU has an outstanding coop program, I’m still quite confused how this would help me in my four years study.

Oh…btw i was also accepted by American University, which is an outstanding school of International Relations/Affairs. Can someone tell me which school is better?

Good luck to everyone~~ loll

I got accepted with a full tuition National Merit Scholarship which means I only have to pay for room and board. I also got into the Honors College. Since Northeastern was my top choice school, I’m really excited to finally get admitted. Hooray!

Got accepted into NU-in program! Happy and sad at the same time cuz i didnt apply for that program:/ I am wondering if that program worth it…

NU.IN appears to be a Spring acceptance program, your first semester is overseas, and you come back and start on campus classwork, it fills dorms/classes when others go off to Co-Op. You are accepted, congratulations. Plus you are part of the NU family and are oriented and have made a network with other students abroad with you before showing up to campus.

Hey guys!

I found the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NEUAcceptedStudents/

Thank you, that really helped… But it means I didn’t get anything :frowning: Does anybody have any idea of how to apply for a merit scholarship even though I’m an international student? Is it too late? Or there’s no such thing as an “international merit scholarship”? What would you do if you were me? Like how would you pay college? Is there any other way? I’m kinda desperate cuz I can’t afford it :S thank you!

No applying for merit scholarships at Northeastern - all applicants are evaluated for merit during the admission process. I believe both US and international students can get merit. If you did not get anything in your admissions packet you are out of luck.

Accepted into the Nursing program! Also a 10k a year scholarship - starting my sophomore year? Does anyone know why it’s only for 3 years as opposed to four? No complaints though, I’m just happy to be accepted at all haha (:

Jessi489: That is odd. You may want to reread the award letter. Merit awards are usually expressed as, for example, $20,000 for freshman year and $10,000/semester starting sophomre year.

My D got the same $10,000/year ($5000/semester) starting sophomore year that Jessi489 got. I thought it was strange too but I reread it a couple times lol. It specifically says $30,000 over the 4 years. I don’t remember the name of the award but it was related to “leadership qualities”
