Northeastern Early Action / Early Decision Class of 2030 Official Thread

I think I have said this earlier but I was looking for ways to maximize my chances of getting ED1 for NU, and really appreciate if anyone who applied and got admitted recently to share some tips or anything, this is my top choice school

Applying ED I will be a big help. I would say likely admit to Boston campus, but nothing is guaranteed of course.

You can co op from many schools. Drexel is also a co op themed school so it would make a nice bar bell to NU - both will get you that experience.

Then you’re good either way.

Good luck.

Thanks, I really like NU’s mission and approach, and in fact, in one of my essays, I talked about Business as a tool for upcycling and service towards overlooked problems and people, and I hope my work with startup organizations ties into that aspect.

That’s great. But what’s your backup plan, in case it’s needed?

Your interests sound more like Babson than NU to me.

There are colleges that have a business sustainability mission - not sure if NU does.

Nonetheless I hope you get in but assume you won’t so you are properly prepared in case.

No matter what you want to hear, no one here can admit you.

because you are full pay, i think you have a good shot at getting in ED. lack of a test score puts you in a larger mixed bag pool but your ECs seem good. hopefully your teacher recs highlight the same initiative and service that your EC list does (and you are not exaggerating any of them). be open and ready to the possibility that they might offer you NU.in or a non-Boston campus experience as well - they love to do that will full pay applicants.

Kiddo applying ED1 to NEU.

We won’t qualify for aid. Heard any ED student not qualifying for aid got offered merit-based scholarships? One can only hope. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Does anyone have feedback on the top 3 campus choices? We toured Boston and we are having a hard time choosing the topic 3. Any first-hand experience, rumors, etc.? What factors should we consider?

Never heard that before.

Most applicants choose Boston campus. If your student is adventurous then London, Oakland or New York would be good. Also, the likelihood of acceptance is better if a campus other than Boston is their first choice.

Changed to EA -so that acceptance chance drops by about 150% –haha! Best of luck to all the ED and EA folks on here!

In the end, if it’s not 100% a sure thing for her and I wouldn’t think it is based on your other posts, I think it’s smart.

Binding to a place that doesn’t necessarily fit wouldn’t make sense.

In the end, they accept far more non-ED than ED (3640 non-ED vs. 1492 ED according to the CDS - but you know that 1492 included athletes and other things.

Yes, with 98K apps and being need aware, it’s going to be a struggle ED or not - but I wouldn’t say it reduces your odds 150% or even 50%. No way to know. But best not to bind at what isn’t the top choice.

It’s a shame these schools do this to 17 year olds.

Good luck to your daughter.

May I ask why you switched from ED to EA?

We really need funding for college -and she wants to see what kind of financial aid (merit and need) is offered at other schools. A few of her safeties have ‘lotto-win’ full ride options -and while it’s a long shot -she really wanted to try for them. Some of her other options have full-tuition options if she is admitted (for our income level). And obviously, you never know exactly what the merit and need will be (despite the calculators). I appreciate her being so financially considerate.

Thank you! Good luck to your kiddo too!

Just posted on your other thread to ask if she has any sure thing $30k schools - not we hope schools but didn’t want to do on an NU thread.

Out of curiosity
I know that NEU gets tons of applications and their Boston campus admit rate it tiny. Lots of people are attracted to to the school for their location, co-op, “prestige” and other good things. It’s also really clear that their application numbers are high because they have no supplemental essay so it’s pretty easy to apply. My 2024 grad applied to NEU in part for that reason. And, hey, more money for them in application fees, I get it.

Fast forward, my current senior was not planning to apply but then two weeks ago she received an unsolicited application fee waiver. So
what the heck
it’s free, no supplements, it’s in Boston, great art classes (her major) through SMFA, so let’s apply. Well, it turns out their portfolio requirement includes 4 “optional” supplemental essays/short answer in addition to the art portfolio itself. Whoa! And the portfolio platform they use is much less user-friendly than they common platform used by all the other schools my D is applying to. What a pain.

I’m genuinely confused by their tactic. If they really want to drum up application numbers (I think they do) they why make the application for this ONE school so cumbersome. And if they really want $$ (I think they do) why give us a fee waiver.

We’ll see if my child finds the time to write four more supplements. Probably not.

Did your 2024 grad end up attending NEU?

No. She withdrew after ED1 acceptance to her top choice.

If she applied, another rejection - keep the admit rate low.

They’ve created this brand that I’m not sure if society sees it but the college students see this hard to get as an elite name.

So if she applies ..more likely if she’s not art
she helps to keep their allure of hard to get.

That less than half get need aid shows you they are potentially picking and choosing, based on priorities including full pay.

Lower rate likely equals more parents willing to spend out big $$.

Yes, I definitely understand why they want people to apply and the dynamic you describe. But why do they make it so uniquely cumbersome to apply for art? I wonder if they do that for any others schools? Definitely was not expecting that
and not likely to apply as a result.

What day does everyone think decisions will be released? I’m thinking 12/10 or 12/11.
