Northeastern Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

From what I can gather, we pay for the room, but there is no meal plan.

My daughter has been accepted to both. She’s interested in UMASS but hasn’t toured it yet. She’s been to NEU a couple of times. We live 2.5 hours away. Congratulations to both of your girls!

Does Northeastern stack athletic and merit scholarships? We also did a pre read which came back with no aid. I am hoping we will get some merit as well!

Was surprised to see this. Full year tuition for NU London is a deal!
Annual Tuition Fees:
Home: £9,250
International: £26,500

It’s a fantastic deal and people don’t realize it. British tuition is capped by law.

Northeastern University London is a British university, operating in the English system. In corporate terms it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Northeastern University. It is accredited by the relevant British authorities. It is not accredited by the US accrediting agencies. Undergraduate programs require three years to complete. As was shown, although a private university, it is subsidized by the UK government for UK residents.

Thank you, makes perfect sense.
Why do they then charge $85,000 for a year for the same curriculum renamed Global Scholars, or London Scholars? I know this includes room (but no meals), but it seems grossly inflated, no?

Because you are ultimately getting your degree from Northeastern in Boston… you’re paying for them to accept those credits. Even if you study abroad in much cheaper countries whIle at NEU, you pay for your credits at NEU at NEU’s tuition rate. If you attend London all three years (you apply through the European system) it is cheaper, European rates.

I do follow your explanation. But it’s the same product, they charge Global scholars a HUGE premium for the opportunity to come back to Boston after year one. NEU sells the same thing to different customers for different prices. It makes me as a customer feel very dirty, used. I wish I never saw that pricing.

Two years ago that price tag included not only tuition, but housing (which is quite expensive in London), roundtrip airfare for the main trip there and back, overnight trips to Scotland and York, and many other activities in London throughout the semester/year (think museums, boat tours, bus tours, day trips to Brighton and other locations, etc). Also, when you are attending as a Global Scholar, you are very much part of NU, so that even though there are resources and advisors present in London for immediate advice/assistance, your true academic advisors are in Boston, and you have access to all of NU’s resources online before returning to Boston. NU also hosted a large Thanksgiving dinner for its Global Scholars/NUin students and held lots of talks, workshops, etc throughout the year specifically for that student body. All of that is part of the package, if you will, for those that were attending Global Scholars/NUin, not those international/domestic UK students attending NU London through the UK system.

What do kids/parents considering NE think about the promise of the school in general? Is the high tuition worth it for a CS major, especially if you compare to state honors colleges?

does anyone know when first years register for regular classes? not just ed ā€œnuaccelerateā€ summer courses? @TomSrOfBoston

I think it’s during orientation. They just released dates on Tuesday. Parents and students got emails and sign up is in the application portal. It’s based on college and we had 4 options in July. I can’t see the dates anymore now that we’ve registered but the sessions are 2 days and normally on Monday and Tuesday.

Ok thanks. Someone else told me its during orientation so i bet thats right.

I would say any university experience is what you make it. And I personally do not think any university is worth going into extreme debt for UG. You can have an amazing experience and value from a state school just as you can at NU. The coops can be advantageous in any field which is a perk of NU…

I agree, NU not worth paying a major differential. If it’s close, I could understand paying up a little for it as the coop has value - but there are better/as competitive CS programs out there that cost about half. But it’s clear, too, that so many students go and have great things to say. But might they say the same had they attended their in state flagship? Maybe.
If you are paying cash, fine, but would advise not taking on debt if another option exists. 2 cents.

Someone reported getting off the waitlist into global scholars yesterday

In past cycles some students were admitted to NU In or other alternative entry programs. No one was admitted to Boston.

S24 who was admitted ED2 received 10k for NMF. Based on everything I could find on Facebook, Reddit, and here, that is what we were expecting. So we’re happy we got it. We were worried about them taking it down to 2500. It’ll cushion the pain when COA exceeds 100k…

Wait…London Scholars have to pay the Boston tuition rate? My son is now considering this choice (he hasn’t made up his mind) and I thought we would have to pay the London campus rate.
