My son also has been accepted to schools that have higher ranks for his major including merit scholarships.
But please tell me what I am missing here, as I want to do a fair comparison. While I agree, regular admission would have been ideal, how much different is the NUin program, if you take the Boston option. You live in a hotel close to campus for only one semester. Enjoy all the same perks of the school except you have to take a few classes only for NUin students. Second semester you are back on campus.
I am trying to get all the details and info on the program, so please any input or advice is appreciated.
Before enrolling (before September) it is very easy. Just notify admissions and they will switch it. Exceptions are if you want to switch into nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, architecture and graphic design. That would require a second review of the application and for the latter two submitting a portfolio. After starting classes there would be an internal transfer process like at most colleges.
Agree. It says it’s a pathway to transfer to NU. I guess we aren’t good enough. Then it goes on to say you must maintain C and B- grades to transfer. What the heck? I’m an A student. I’m beginning to think this is all about getting students to enroll in this new school for the money. They did make a huge investment in this failing school.
Yup, I believe it is a way for the college to make money too. I don’t think many are going to enroll at this college in London and this investment will be a fail.
Which is puzzling to me why they assume domestic students would be willing or able to travel internationally during COVID. NU Bound doesn’t offer any option besides London.
I’m also trying to get a handle on NUin Boston and if anyone here knows what happens second semester for housing. Do you stay in the hotel? Or, do you stay with with your roomate and move into a freshman dorm? Or, do you move in wherever there is space and get a new roomate — like to take the place of a student who goes abroad or on co-op?
I don’t know- some kids might love it- I spent my sophomore year in London with fellow Pepperdine students and it was one of the best years of my life. If I could have stayed there all four years… I would have. My son was offered regular admissions into Northeastern but he said whoa, that would be cool when he heard about the London option.
Did you mention anything about liking to travel or interest in study abroad? I’ve wondered if they choose kids that 1. are already full pay or otherwise not receiving FA and 2. seem more open to new experiences and/or adventurous.
From what I’ve heard (our tour guide back in 2019 had done NU.in) and seen on the videos the participants produce on YT the kids that go seem to have an amazing experience and given that study abroad might be harder to incorporate alongside coops it’s an opportunity to study and live internationally before you start the study/coop cycle.
In addition many schools utilize this type model of for enrollment management. BU, NYU, Cornell and Tulane for example have either first semester/year abroad or sophomore year guaranteed transfer.
For Spring semester NU In students will be assigned available room in o campus housing. A few years ago when East Village first opened in January all NU In students were housed there in the spring and many complained that they felt isolated from the fall admits. So they are now spread out across campus to mingle.
The New College for the Humanities was an existing institution when Northeastern acquired it and continues to offer programs in the British model. In the past it has been fully enrolled, except in 2020 of course.
but enrollment (not sure if this includes nu in and nu bound) is 210 total students according to web information. that is really small. am i missing something?
Yes, if the switch is made during or at the end of freshman year. I am not sure about other programs but the business school has transition courses for those who transfer in.
NU In, for all locations, has been around 900 students in recent years. I am not sure about the target enrolment for NU Bound or how many NU In students go to London.
Sounds like you are a second class citizen looking to make friends with those who got regular acceptance to Northeastern or to Boston schools with higher rankings. Northeastern does not have the ranking or the reputation to support the NUin option. Or perhaps it is a PR disaster if they are indeed admitting students with similar or better stats?
