Northwestern HPME Part 1

the options available to you in CSD, while interesting, are limited. on the other hand, Weinberg offers you an array of fields, whether in the sciences or not. it comes down to what you’re interested in, though, but that’s my take. plus, i’m a little biased as i’m in weinberg with a science and non-science major…

Dealhlyhollows:

Does CSD have a greater course load than Weinberg?.. like… is it more work? if so, do you know how much more it is?

Also, what is your major right now?

arctic>>> I totally agree with you about the test prep classes and how the scores reflect how much a student has prepared. I only took the SAT once and didn’t study for it at all. I didn’t think about it that much and didn’t stress over it. Oh and I’m definately going to HPME (I didn’t apply to any Ivies).

paki: Another question…are those the only ECs you did? and what rank were you in your schoool?

as far as the courseload, how many APs did you take?
and what other programs did you get into?>>>>

As far as my ECs, I’ve been playing piano since I was 5 years old, tutoring, and I’m part of NHS. Other than that, nothing really.

My rank is 5/637.
I took 9 AP classes.
I applied to UMKC 6 year medical school program, UIC’s GPPA program, and HPME. These are the only schools I applied to. I got waitlisted from UMKC and I haven’t heard back from UIC yet.

angad>>> I got into Weinberg.

GoBroncos: does hinsdale central not have a physical education/gym class?
or do you guys have “honors” gym in addition to ur AP curriculum?>>>

My school doesn’t include gym grades into a student’s GPA.
How I did it?>>> I took all honors and AP classes and got all A’s. Illinois also requires students to take Health class. My school only offers it at the regular level, and I got an A, which rounds into my GPA as a 5.

angad, what other schools are you debating between?

between NU’s HPME and Brown’s PLME, which one should i attend?

carlili:

So far, I have gotten into the Union/Albany Med LIM program, HPME, and the PennState/Jefferson med program.

I am really only debating between HPME and PSU/JMC. HPME comes with great location, and a really great “brand name”. On the other hand, PSU is less expensive, and is only 6 years and, with 7 years, I could get my MBA there as well. Its a tough decision for me, but I have a few weeks to figure it out. lol

On a more comic note, George Washington University sent me a letter today telling me that I had been waitlisted. How the hell does that happen??? I get into NU (waaaay better than GW) and then get waitlisted at GW. On top of that, I got into HPME and 2 other combined programs… and i got waitlisted at a crap place like GW??? lol… i was laughing my ass off when i opened the letter. I never really wanted to go to GW (I only applied for their combined prog, but i got rejected from that)… i just find it REALLY funny =P

peace

ARCTIC4:

I’d go with Brown PLME, just cuz its ivy league and if you see Brown’s and NU’s residency matching lists, Brown’s is better.

angad19: totally know what you mean about the whole waitlisting thing and getting into HPMe. I got waitlisted to REGULAR Rice (and rejected from rice/baylor) but i got into HPMe. freaking weird.

but NU has a better med school and im looking forward to a 7 yr program…ahh. o well, i have time to decide.

did anyone in HPME get accepted to PLME as well?

Got my rejection letter today in the mail. It’s okay - Harvard picked up my spirits a lot.

i had asked the HPME minimum GPA on this thread a while back, and i got like 3 different asnwes, so I send NU an email, and here’s what I got back (just in case anyone else was wondering too):

For HPME, you must maintain a GPA of 3.0 overall and a 3.2 in the sciences. You do not need to take the MCATS or any other test before matriculating to the medical school. Essentially, you are already admitted into medical school as a freshman, but you must complete your undergraduate coursework first.

and that’s really really chill… i mean… 3.2??? that’s like… 2 Bs for every one A (roughly)

hey everybody,
i was just curious as to what are the minimum requirements for a high schooler applying to the HPME program. i am a junior and i have no idea on what im doing

check this link for HPME requirements

[Entrance Requirements](http://www.medschool.northwestern.edu/hpme/entrance.html)

angad, i don’t know about course loads b/w CSD and Weinberg, sorry…

arctic, i’m assuming you got into both hpme and plme, since you asked which to attend? congrats, first of all! but on where to attend, i disagree with angad. while brown is ivy league, there are some reasons to attend hpme. First, if one wants to go by rankings as an indicator, which i agree are arbitrary, brown and nu are ranked the same (14, i think). second, again by rankings and from what i’ve heard, nu med school is significantly better than brown’s med school, so i think this makes up for the lack of an ivy league name. but brown is great, so don’t get me wrong (i applied to brown too and got in today, but not into plme)…

artic, One thing I have heard about PLME is that people are ready to leave the isolated campus of Brown after 4 years. But you are stuck there for 4 more years. Everyone you went to college with has moved on, and then you stay in the same place. At NU, you move to a new place, and you happen to be in the middle of the most prime piece of Chicago real estate!! Your friends from college are nearby, and you get to start out in a whole new environment. What could be better than that? Good luck with your decision. Keep us posted!

yea i agree…Brown has a great undergrad but their med school (which is what really matters here) is nothing compared to Feinberg. Also, Feinberg’s location and resources such as ridiculous funding provide for an endless amount oppurtunity…and the Feinberg hospitals (northwestern memorial hospital, jesse james va?.. and evanston) are much better than any associated with brown.

for all u guys who got waitlisted from a “crap place” like GW…

schools took a look at ur stats and realized that your stats were wayyy above average…hinting at the fact that GW was not your first choice

Therefore, if they grant u admissions and u dont go, their matriculation rate sinks, which doesnt really good for a prospective student looking at the school that would attend if they got in

dabulls, i think your might be right about being waitlisted from crap universities. But, even so, if I was really interested in teh college (like, it was my top choice) wouldn’t they just have turned down an above average applicant?.. lol w/e… i dont even care… it was just something funny. lol

TO EVERYONE WHO GOT ACCEPTED:

can someone make a facebook group called “HPME class of 2015” (7 years assumed, though you can technically take 8) so that we can get to know each other?

angad, you should seriously consider PSU-Jefferson;1) neat, friendly, good-time kids; 2) the program is so well organized it’s a breeze; 3) 6 years MD, 4) can get your MBA/MPH in 7; 5) you’ll make so much dough!!!

I made a facebook group! Come join “HPME 2015!” :)

are you guys gonna go to the whole meet and greet in evanston?

I live in CA… and there is no way I am gonna fly out for a meet and greet. No way. lol
