Northwestern HPME Part 1

haha. my thoughts exactly. i already flew out for an interview, i doubt im gonna fly out again. but just wondering what other ppl are doing.

what’s meet and greet day? when, for who, nu, or just hpme? is it the same as preview wildcat days, or something like that…

hm… this might be the wrong place to ask this, but is anyone who got rejected after the interview still seriously considering northwestern regular?

So, since this is the HPME expert forums, do you guys think acceptance into HPME this year is a better choice than Princeton or say, a 75% scholarship to vanderbilt???

i mean, HPME does create some huge debt…

a quick qeustion to you all:

In the NU acceptance letter it says something like “you will be allowed to attend NU, provided that you maintain your grades”… or something like that.

Now, I have been absent from school for 12-13 days this year because of college interviews, so my grades have seriously suffered (I have straight Bs right now, and prolly like 2-3 As and 2-3 Bs by the end of the semester). Would that be considrered an “academic falteration” worth enough to keep me from entering NU?

thanks for your help!

no im not SERIOUSLY considering it after the interview bagels. id be ashamed to see all the HPMEs there knowing that some lame interviews changed my life that much and i cannot be one of them :(.

no…i just dont like the feel of the school enough to go there for normal undergrad

UCLA ftw!!!

UCLA’s good too aa6590… esp since you got regents there =D… parties are prolly better than NU too ;)

id rather be in HPME :(((((.

feinberg rapes.

My DS got in both HPME (at NU) and Stanford. Leaning to go to Stanford but it is a tough decision.

There must be others who got in HPME and HYPS. Would like to listen from others in similar position and what their thoughts are.

PS: For us it costs 10K/year more at NU (for the first three years) but it takes one less year to earn MD at NU than at Stanford + Unknown Medical school.

This is an on-going and similar thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/486578-northwestern-hpme-vs-princeton-vs-vanderbilt.html

I went to NU for undergrad and Stanford for my master. Honestly, I didn’t feel any difference in terms of rigor of my classes. I’d take HPME if I were you.

has everyone who got in already joined the “HPME 2015” group on facebook, cuz that group only has 21 members so far, and i’m pretty sure there’s more of us =D

go join, so that we can talk.

hey I’m a senior in South Korea. Since school starts at March here I will apply to HPME this fall. I haven’t got US citizenship. I was wandering about my chances of getting in…
stats so far
SAT2s; math2c 800, chem 780, world history 740 -but I will be taking French sat2 in october and take world history again in december…
SAT1: 760 verbal 760 math 740 writing - I’m taking sat1 again in june
APs: I haven’t finished taking them yet (or even started this year), but so far I’ve got Chem 5 and Cal BC 5
EC: I have been doing volunteer work at a hospital for handicapped children on and off for 2 years, typing e-books for the blinds (I’ve got more than 400 volunteer hours I think), member of school’s amnesty international club, editor of our school’s newspaper, member of school’s accapella group, worked at a lab in Seoul National University…etc

what should I do now?or is it too early to ask?
oh and do HPME admin consider APs a lot?

I would suggest doing some job shadowing of a physician/surgeon… I think that that is one of the strongest medically-related ECs that bs/md applicants can have since it exposes them to true medicine.

You look pretty good to me tho… what’s your GPA?

regarding shadowing a physician, i didn’t do it and still got into the program. since you have a lot of experience working at a hospital, i would think that shadowing a physician wouldn’t be necessary (but it can’t hurt!)

regarding APs, they are not very important. The most important thing is your ability to convey that you are deadset on pursuing a career in medicine.

well my gpa so far is 4.0 and my school does not offer any AP classes. We don’t have any ranking system either. My mom is a pediatrician so would it be helpful or harmful that I shadow my mother? She doesn’t do any surgeries though… Should I just shadow someone whom my mom could help me get in touch with? does field matter?
And does Northwestern have “any topic” as one of its application essay? I am really interested in building an orphanage after I retire and was wondering if it would help if I kind of do some kind of a blueprint indicating how it will be run and what kind of care will be given. Would this help appeal my humanitarian interest? I am kind of worried though that this will shadow my fervor in medicine…

It seems most of you guy who got into HPME were in a research program of some kind.

How do you find out about these opportunities, and do you guys know any off the top of your head?

I have scoured the net to find these programs, but inevitably was unsuccessful.

It would really be great if any of you could help me out.

Thanks alot

hey guys - hpme is my number 1 choice as a junior in hs.
