I’m pretty sure that I want to be a doctor, but being a teenager, who knows what I’ll want to be in several years. I don’t think my doubt comes too much from whether or not I want to be a doctor right now, but more from an “I’m just a teenager!” attitude. I have seen so many of my friends who went off to study biology as a pre-med student come back as business or english majors, and I feel that I am just as sure I want to be a doctor as they were when they left for college.

Again, I like Northwestern, but I’m not in LOVE with it, and if I do end up attending NW, I feel that it may only be because I see the HPME as a “step” to becoming a doctor. I just wish I was totally infatuated with NW right now - it would make all of my decisions so much easier (plus, it would be nice if NW could pay for my airplane ticket, hehe).

Taking the time to visit NW all the way from California is tough for me, both because of money and time. How decided will I be about NW after visiting? I’m afraid that visiting NW may not make me any more sure about my decision on whether or not to attend (and the fact that I don’t know any of my other college decisions isn’t helping). The interview letter also says that I will be able to spend some time with an HPME student - will this experience help me decide whether or not being a doctor is the right career for me?

Any other responses to my feelings/situation would be appreciated.

lol it seems like no chicago residents have been getting any interviews right now. maybe they’ll get them later? it seems like most ppl are from cali from what i’ve been seeing so far.

There are several posts in this thread that give the “100 out of 700+” # of applicants who receive the interview notification.

I searched the Northwestern website and did not find these numbers. Is the 100 interview invitations just from speculation or are these numbers based off of a source?

It seems like it’d be a pretty reliable source. :] Of course, that was two years ago, and supposedly, NU’s trying to cut down on the number of people it accepts into HPME so the numbers might be slightly different now.

Jenn-I agree with cirohpue that HPME is for students who KNOW they want to be a doctor. If you are unsure, it will probably come through in your interview, and you will not be accepted. IF you do decide to interview, you need to make sure you sound confident about your desire to go into medicine. As far as others dropping out of the the pre-med path and changing majors–it is probably because they could not hack the pressure. Being a pre-med is TOUGH, and only those who are very committed and willing to work hard will make it. Also, there is “natural selection” as students do not receive the grades they need to get into med school start dropping out and changing majors.

Getting an interview for HPME is an incredible opportunity–why don’t you just give it your best shot, and if you are accepted, you can weigh it against the offers you receive in April.

has anybody gotten an interview recently? it seems like they stopped sending letters out. i’m hesitating whether to call the office or not. it would eliminate all hope, but at least no more waiting.
