Northwestern HPME Part 1

did anybody here call and ask if they got/didn’t get an interview? Were you successful in finding out?

I’m gonna try and call on Monday or Tuesday…

I got my rejection letter today. However, one hour before the mail’s arrival, I also got a call from WashU’s Scholars Program (also a undergrad+MD program) and found out that I’m a finalist  I’m glad the bad news and good news came together.

well today was my drexel interview (which went okay I guess) and I come home to find my rejection letter for HPME…grrrr, that’s my 3 rejection…time for some haagen das :(

rejection here too

i’ve received nothing as of yet from hpme…lol, but i’m pretty sure i got rejected too haha

that’ll make it 4 interviews, 6 rejections…ehh

as a student of hpme, here’s some advice:

DON’T FEEL BAD IF YOU DON’T GET AN INTERVIEW/INTO HPME

admission here is completely arbitrary. one student here right now told me that he got an interview w/ hpme because his mentor (who went to hpme) called the office and asked why my friend didn’t get an interview yet.

plus once they come here, most students have to maintain a 3.2 gpa. 3.2 into medschool? ridiculous. that plus minimal pre-med courses spells out “the ULTIMATE moral hazard problem for academics” (to quote one of my good friends here).

but to get on track, there are many students who deserve to get into this program, and who would work 10,000 times harder than those who are in it now. but guess what? it’s all arbitrary here. if you want to get in, you better understand that your chances are minimal. you have to have the luck that these people actually look at your app instead of simply using it as a prop so that the table stops shaking.

there are many more awesome schools in this country. i personally wish i had gone to a place where the academic community was quite stronger. but as many of you, i wished to have the straight route to medschool, but to get that, i will have wasted three years of my life that i could have used to pursue more of my interests and have more opportunities.

What caused the 180 from “HPME is a great program” to “wasted three years of my life?”

To me, I’m drawn to a guaranteed prog because I get the chance to pursue the interests and opportunities I would have otherwise not available to me on a normal premd track.

I also think that the students who enter HPME are not the type of students who work to maintain the bare minimum for GPA requirements (which they are raising this year again).

ikia452, I am curious–what programs/schools did you give up in order to enroll in Northwestern’s HPME? Also, please elaborate on the 3.2 gpa issue. I did not understand what you meant about the moral hazard problem.

is the “moral hazard” that others in one’s med school class will feel cheated because they had to work so much harder to get in? in response to that, though, we’re doing our requisite share of hard work for admission right now instead of 4 years down the raod…it doesn’t seem all that unfair

Wow okay, I didn’t expect such anti-HPME here!! But right off the bat, I have no idea in the world why I got the interview and while it makes me feel worthwhile, I also feel like the only reason I got it was that element of luck. Hey, I’m a pessimist when it comes to apps though. Comes from many long years as being considered not good enough by brilliant parents. Sorry a lot of baggage here to unload. What I actually came here to ask was what I could expect at the interview. I have some things to think about when it comes to formulating actual concrete answers to interview questions, because I have a mental picture of you know, the basics, why I want to go there and why be a physician and all that, but its not the same as having actual words to describe it. So if there are any people out here who have interviewed recently, or are familiar with the process and are kind enough to share, that would be wonderful.

Got my HPME rejection letter today. :P

lol, i STILL haven’t received anything from hpme…makes me really nervous, though, if i had gotten an interview, i would’ve known by now.

just came back from interviews in Chicago
i really didn’t expect having 5 interviews and being asked the same questions each time (2 bme professors, HPME director, 2nd yr med student, med faculty)
northwestern is a great place and the people there were extremely friendly
the medical school was amazing
if you haven’t had your interviews yet then I definately recommend staying overnight and if you haven’t visited before then go there a day early so that you can tour and visit some classes
overall, the program looks like its awesome and the people who are in it are really relaxed and have normal lives

got the rejection notice today

got rejected 2 or 3 days ago.

Seems like less people on CC got interviews this year than last year.

Maybe that’s due to the fact that they’re trying to scale down the program?

i wonder how much they are trying to scale it down, i heard a year or two ago that they were cutting it by something like 5 kids a year, so there might be about 30 or 35 spots this year, meaning they would probably accept like 45-50. Not 100% sure about this though just guessing.

Yeah, my friend who got in last year said that they’re cutting it down by 5 every year, with the ultimate goal of getting down to 25-30 total spots in the program.

just got back from the HPME interview. i think out of all of the interviews i have been to, the people I met there were absolutely some of the coolest and most cultured people i have ever met. It was really not what i expected, i expected a bunch of harvard-thirsty aggressive types, but they were all really gracious, ordinary people. So i think i want to get in even more now.
