I am anxiously waiting for my aid package to see if I can afford Northwestern, and if I can then I’m going to send in my deposit. I’m just really nervous because some people had a efc that was like $10000 more than their fafsa efc. bb2007, are you deciding between HYPS and HPME?

northwestern isn’t giving me any money :(

where is everybody from? I’m from Southern California.

im from the dirty south

im from around the chitown 'burbs, any other chicagoans?

Three6, yes, i am deciding between HYPS and HPME, I am from Southwest.

YAY! i live like 1.5-2 hrs from chicago:)
excited…

hey jonthelin
im from socal too
im deciding between HPME and UCSD med scholars if i get an interview

My son is in the same predicament. He’s trying to choose between HYPS and HPME, especially between HPME and Princeton. Do you know if Northwestern will give you a B.A degree after three years? Can you then apply to other medical schools? If not, then , wouldn’t you miss the chance to go to a better Medical School than Northwestern, not that Feinberg is not a good one. It just isn’t the very best.

smathur, HPME gives you a B.A. after three years if you choose that option. if not, you get a bachelor of science in medicine, i believe, after a year into feinberg. you can apply to other med schools; however, if you do, you lose your guaranteed spot, which basically means that if you decide to apply, you’d have to be pretty confident about going to a better med school. otherwise, hpme is pointless with its guaranteed spot.

You’re right, BingCold. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

hey funkdunk, i’m also waiting for a response from UCSD’s Medical Scholars program. The message should be coming any day now i suppose.

sure, no problem. smathur, i’m in the shoes as your son-- deciding between Harvard and HPME

Three6mafia, could you tell us where you got those numbers from in post#1478. Does the source say that these were the top students from Princeton applying and getting rejected from Feinberg? Did the premed body who applied have a better stats. in similar colleges? Or even better ones?
Admissions can be a crapshoot sometimes. My son got into YPS but is waitlisted at Brown!

I got my info from these links:

I wasn’t able to find stuff for Harvard or Stanford, but if anyone has access to that info, please post it to help the people who are deciding between HPME and other schools.

Thanks a lot, three6mafia

hey everyone, congrats on all your acceptances… I found this site today, and found it to be very interesting. I too am accpeted to the HPME program… but like many of you, I am torn between hpme and harvard… To make my decision even more hard, I got a full ride to BU for the 7 year med program… I know that i want to be a doctor when I grow up, so thats why I’m thinking of doing a combined degree program, but I want to go to one to the top med schools, like HMS or Hopkins… Are there any of you who know people who have turned down HPME for Harvard… or even vice versa… it would be interesting to see how they view their decision now that they are attending the school that they have chosen… Congratulations once again :)

just to clarify, you are free to apply to other medical schools in your 3rd year and still retain your spot at feinberg. Basically, you have nothing to lose. As for turning down hyps, that is definitely a very difficult decision. I know people in hpme who have done so, and I personally turned down princeton and yale. Northwestern is a great school in and of itself, and altho it is not a top ivy, it isn’t far below. Also, most high school students underestimate the difficulty of being a pre-med and getting into A medical school, save a top tier one. I’m sure alot of you would work very hard if you go to regular undergrad, but keep in mind, it is very difficult to get into a medical just as good or better than feinberg (alot harder than getting into the undergraduate institution). Also, being in HPME allows you to explore other interests and get a headstart on things that regular premeds would not be able to do.

if you apply to other medical schools you definitely lose your guaranteed spot at feinberg, though you are still able to reapply to feinberg and be considered among the regular applicant pool, but if you want the guarantee you can NOT apply to any other med schools, its a wonderful program though ive heard numerous cases of people turning down one or more of hyps for this program

yea, the acceptance letter explicitly stated what AceMaster33 said about applying to other med schools above
does anyone have a link for Feinberg’s residency match list for 2006 or this year?

It’s okay, but nothing way out there. Look at Penn’s or Yale’s - those are insane. Sad to see no MGH (right?)
