Northwestern HPME Part 1

monnn2008, I’m pretty sure your right about test scores not mattering after getting the interview. Most BA/MD programs have a 2 step admissions process. In the 1st phase people are selected on a basis of their stats, ECs, recs, and essay. The top applicants are then invited for an interview, which is the second phase. At this point, everyone has great stats, so SATs/ACT don’t matter. The final decisions are mainly based on the interviews. At least thats what my impression is after going through the process this year.

gpa 4.9 (Phillips Academy Andover) look up our national rank
undisclosed class rank

2180 (m800 cr700 wr680)
math 2c 800
chem 780 physics 780
5’s in AP chem, calc bc, physics and latin

hospital volunteer, volunteer with special needs children, baseball, basketball, meals on wheels, library volunteer, lots of stuff like that.
taking a biochemistry course this summer at Brown university (applying to PLME as well probably)
also shadowed a physician for a week + other EC’s of the same sort

any advice, warnings, suggestions on where to apply? thanks

i suppose you could raise your SATs, but more importantly, and what I can’t see from your list of ECs, is how involved you are in your ECs, how passionate you are about them, etc. if you get the interview (which i can’t decide), convey your love of med…

come on people, let’s stop making this a huge chances thread. you can post a separate thread any where on the Multiple Degree programs board to ask for chances. Let’s keep this going as a place where people can talk about HPME, ask questions to learn more about it, etc.

also, no one can really give you chances for programs like HPME, PLME, and R/B. They are almost exactly like HYP in terms of competition. Just apply, because there is no way of anyone to be 100% sure if you’re a shoe-in or have no chance at all. and this isnt just pointed to moneyindabank, but everyone asking for chances.

word your right, eternity1115 so are u in hpme now/where else did u apply/where else did u get in? i just want to see how competitive hpme is compared to some of the other generic med progs

Does Northwestern (more specifically hpme) unweight gpa’s?

yes they do

moneyindabank, i’m going to be a freshman in hpme this fall. hpme was actually the only one I applied to because I wasnt crazy about accelerated programs and was totally prepared to go the regular premed path, and thought that hpme and r/b were really the only 2 programs worth going to since their medical schools were awesome . I had considered applying to plme, but I didn’t feel that it really fit my interests, and I did get in Rice ID to get the R/B application but didn’t fill it out because I didn’t feel that Rice was a good fit for me after visiting.

what was wrong with plme. thats my first choice, so i just want to know why u didn’t even bother applying?
could u pm me ur stats, i know hpme is reallllly hard to get into so did u have jaw dropping stats or something?

eternity115, i don’t want to flood you with requests, but could you PM me your stats as well…thanks…

eternity115 could u do the same for me
im just curious where I currently stand thank you

I’m sorry, but I really don’t feel like typing up my stats again. If I do it for you, then more people will ask and I will just be flooded with PMs and requests. Stats really aren’t as important as some of you make it seem. If you have something around the average scores for HPME, then your ok for standarized tests. Having a good gpa in a very tough curriculum is also important and having a high rank also helps. Whats really important in landing a interview is ECs with leadership exp. and the essay. You need to be able to convince the committee of your dedication to medicine and show that you would be a valuable addition to the program. You will need to show that you have great personal skills as well in your interviews. Remember that “jaw dropping” stats dont get you in HPME, they get you consideration. If you really excel in some other areas, then that can make up a little for stats that are lower than the average for hpme.

hey guys, i have a question, would it hurt my chances at all for getting into HPME or anywhere else if for senior year i had to take a semester of PE, b/c my school requires it, and now it looks like i’ll be stuck w/ it senior year, the only reason i’m asking is b/c i know colleges want u to take the toughest schedule u can, and i don’t want it to look like i’m just slacking off. thanks for any opinoins.

sure pe looks slacker but if colleges see that you had no choice then im sure ull be fine

If PE is a requirement then you have to do it. Graduating from high school is more important than having one more AP class on your transcript. If all your other classes are APs or the highest level, then you will be fine.

Hii. Question for the HPME program…

How important is your high school GPA to the entire process? I’m going to be a junior this fall, and my GPA isn’t great. I’m hoping to end junior year with a cumulative gpa of 3.75.

I go to a rigorous magnet college-prep high school. All my courses have been honors and, next year, junior year, I will be taking pre-calc, ib history, and ib lit. Senior year, ill probably try for ap calc, ap bio, etc.

In terms of showing interest in medicine, last summer I volunteered at a rehabilitation center for awhile & attended a trip on medicine to TJU. This summer, Ill be doing bioresearch as well continuing that through junior year & senior year. EMT… NYLF…

My PSAT scores were good, & I’m taking a SAT course right now. Im prepping for math 2c & Chem & also Lit.

Can anyone help me with chances of getting in? & anything I should do this summer, junior year that would increase these chances? I’m just really worried about my GPA not being high.

OH p.s thats the unweighted gpa. my school absolutely refuses to weight gpas for some reason.

Look, lilbratt, I dont know a WHOLE lot about it, but I’m afraid I think your GPA is a bit on the low side. The average person getting into HPME is probably within 0.00 to 0.10 at most of a 4.0 unweighted GPA.

The year I applied (2004), I went in with a 3.5, and a 1510 SAT (back when it was on a 1600 scale, don’t look shocked =P), and 760+ on all SAT 2s (chem, math 2c, writing). I won’t even talk about my other stuff, because when we were to apply for HPME, the first thing they had us do was send in this little card that just wanted our GPAs, our SATs, and that’s it.

Needless to say, GPA + SAT are hugely important, but the most irritating (but sensible) thing about any combined degree med-program is that GPA will either win it or break it for you in terms of admissions.

The year that I applied, I found out what the average stats were, of accepted people (I think there were 100 seats for that program) and the average GPA my year was a 3.96, and an average SAT I of about 1560.
And this was 2004, so I think you can extrapolate a bit to what it would be now (reasonably sure it’s even harder now).

With that said, college admissions and even combined degree programs are pretty random sometimes, so you could get lucky. Just bear in mind that almost every combined degree program has an initial GPA requirement (and I think you’ll probably meet that with a 3.75), which looks “low”, but when you factor in the competition, almost nobody who actually gets in even has a GPA as low as their “requirement”.

I was wondering if someone would please tell me where I stand and what I need to improve on. I will be a senior in high school next year.

SAT I: 2220 (800 math, 710 CR, 700 writing)
SAT II: 800 math, 710 chemistry, 720 US history

ACT: 36

AP classes taken:
American Govt (A in class, 4 on test)
APUSH (A in class, 4 on test)
Physics (A in class, 4 on test)
BC Calc (A in class, 5 on test)
AP Lang (A in class, 5 on test)
AP Chem (B in class, 5 on test)

Weighted GPA: 4.6
Unweighted GPA:3.93

extracuriculars:
Math team (various awards in regional and state levels; 2nd place individual in state during sophomore year)
Scholastic Bowl
Student Organization for Animal Rights (which I founded and now am the president of)
National Honors Society
Key Club
Indian classical dancing (8 years–getting a degree in this type of dance sometime in the next year)

Volunteer work:
Over 250 hours at our local hospital
Various activities through Key Club and NHS

Work Experience:
Cancer Research during the summer after my Junior Year

I am most worried about my SAT 2 scores…should I take the chem and us history again (I know that they average the scores, so I would need to do really well on both to make a major difference.)

As far as you all can tell, do I have a chance? What are the most important parts of the application to HPME?

did you guys all count in freshmen year for GPA? or do you know if we are SUPPOSED to put in freshmen year into consideration during calculations?

the only reason I am asking is becuase UCs don’t count them
