Northwestern HPME Part 1

the yield was over 80% few years ago – 50 out of 60 admits matriculated. then they decreased the size of HPMEs. i doubt they give 60 acceptances now, probably more like 40-45.

I want to send the HPME program an update…since I have recently won Intel STS Semifinalist…

Is this too late? And if so, do I send it to NU or directly to the HPME program or should I email it? Any advice please…thanks.

When is the latest that HPME would call about an interview?

well, first off, they didn’t call me. i got an email (yesterday) and a letter today.

second, it says that all of the interviews have to be done by March 7th, so gauge that from there…

congrats krishthefish!!! :)

I am thinking that they are letting people know slowly

congrats KrishtheFish. good luck on your interview!

With regards to the update: you should e-mail them. trying never hurts. also, you could try mentioning it in your interview with Dr. Green.

congrats krishthefish! when did you send in your application?

krishthefish- when is your interview? Is it tuesday by any chance?

Oh, true that. It could be roughly by when you sent your application in, too. I did Express Mail on New Year’s Eve, lol. The woman was collecting the stuff from the box and I got it in just in time. And they didn’t get my English Teacher recommendation until the 8th.

anyone planning on doing HPME/engineering?

Just a heads up, they’ve been decreasing the number of engineering HPMEs for a while now (I am one of two in my class). But being an engineer makes you that much more awesome :D

Yeah. I want biomed engineering.

thanks guys… dang loads of questions to answer.

i sent in my application in like mid-december. i’m interviewing on the 8th of february (i’m a 6 hour drive away from evanston, so about 7-7.5 hours from the med school campus). I called and Mr. Palmer was like, so can you interview next week? and I was like, uhh, i was thinking the week after (i have a boston university interview next friday, and i’m visiting brown on thursday)

friday was a good day for me. I also got my penn state/jefferson interview offer that day too. ^^

ps: i think i chose chem as my major.

it seems like they are going by closest to chicago first

and cool! I put chem too :)

hey krishthefish, would you mind posting your stats? thanks!

my stats huh? although i’m sure i’ve put them up here multiple times before, my latin homework is getting boring, so here goes:

GPA: 4.5 (i forgot what all goes after it, but it’s a four five something)
Rank: 2/230-some
SAT: 2260 (1 sitting: 800 math, 750 CR, 710 writing) 2280 SS (800 math, 750 CR, 730 writing)
SAT Chem: 800
SAT Math2: 800

uhh, i’m not really sure what else to put up there. I’m class VP, president/founder of a club, captain of academic team and tennis team, volunteer at hospital, shadowed a couple doctors. wrote what i thought was a decent essay, had good recs.

it’s all basically luck after a while.

edit: oh yeah, forgot, i took all but 1 of the APs my school offers (and even took 1 that they don’t). I didn’t like self study for any or anything though. And all i got was 2 5s, 2 4s, and a 3 so far. (5’s in US gov and chem, 4’s in euro hist and english lang, 3 in us hist) I’m taking bio, english lit, maybe latin lit, physics B, and calc AB this may. also i went to the state science fair 2 years in a row (if it means anything) and I got the first place governor’s award too, as well as I do cancer research at a local university and I presented research at the Ohio Academy of Science’s annual meeting freshman year. but that’s all. nothing like earthshaking or anything. that’s why i say it’s mostly luck. =]

it’s not all luck. your stats are good and your essay must have been convincing.

well thanks =]

See, I don’t think they’re going closest to Chicago first. I talked to someone from my school who’s a first year HPME and his interview last year was in March, one of the last ones because he lived so close.

i think doing interviews by geography would be more trouble than its worth. maybe the first few will be chicago kids but after everyone is fair game.

I don’t think it would be by geography as there is no reason to interview that way. Med schools usually offer interviews to a) the strongest candidates first or b) in the order in which the applications were received.
