Northwestern HPME Part 1

how do you increase your chances to get into the HPME program?

mmm

good scores and strong extracurriculars help.
a strong (very strong) interest in medicine is also a definite plus.

it’s like any other program, there is no secret to it. if you are looking for a guaranteed method of getting into the program, you are not going to find it here.

if you happen to get an interview, how do you show your interest in medicine.

like im not really a naturally expressive person but in my interviews (this one if i get it and my others) i want to come off as enthusiastic about medicine. any tips?

Honestly, what I always do (and what i’ll continue to do) is I just tell it how it is. I’m not going to say I want to do something I don’t (for example, I would LOVE to go into ortho or plastics, or any surgical specialties), but I won’t be rash and tell them something that’s too radical, because as future doctors, we can’t be rash about much. Be yourself, and you’ll do fine. That’s the advice my brother (who’s in a med program now), my father (who is a doctor), and all my friends who got into different programs (HPME, HPM, EAP at Ohio State, NEOUCOM, etc.) tell me. Don’t sweat it dude.

yea, for my interviews i definitely just told it like it is. that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think through what you are going to say before you get to the interview. you should definitely organize your thoughts prior to the interview. you just don’t need to make anything up.

sooo i got an email that basically wants me to set up an interview date within the first 2 weeks of feb.
but like… i am for sure busy on those weekends and i live in detroit, which is around six hours to the campus

soo… well first how many ppl actually get interviewed?
and… WHAT DO I DO?!

I got the email today too. And I have the same problem with the interview.

AND I live in New York, so that is going to require like, a plane ride out there or something. I haven’t figured that out yet.

i don’t know how many people get interviews, but it’s only a handful (~100?)

also, this interview could possibly determine the next 7 years of your life. it would probably be best to find a way to fit it into your schedule.

I’m pretty sure you have to do the interview on a weekday, meaning you just have to find a day or two of school to miss. So that means you dont have to worry about weekends or what not.

Anyway, I just got back from my interviews. Fun stuff! I hope there’s good news for me in march. Good luck to everyone else.

For those who are flying out to Chicago…did you go with your parents? Or just take a flight out there in the morning and then come back the next day? Advice please on how to do this, thanks.

man i havent gotten an interview yet

is there a certain date that if we didn’t get a interview by then, we would know for sure that we won’t ever get it?

and also for those who got a interview, when did you turn in app in?

Well the last day to have an interview is March 7th…so I would assume 2-3 weeks before would be the deadline to get an interview since they asked me to schedule mine in the first two weeks of February.

I send in my application before December 1st…I sent in my request card in like October. I did it really early.

Yeah I did mine really early too so that might affect when you get your interview.

The person in my interview group came by herself I believe and stayed with family/a HPME person at evanston.

What kinds of questions do they ask in the interview…ethical issues? personal interests? medicine related?
Did you take a resume?

lol i sent my application on december 31st (postmark)
soooo not early at all haha
plus my counselor wasn’t able to complete his portion until jan. 2nd (postmark)

lucky lucky i guess

but yea… idk about the scheduling but i think jon w.e. is rt

TheF,

about 10 years ago, one of my friends flew from South Korea for the interview. imagine that! ;)

I did a summer program at Northwestern and my RA was actually in the HPME program and hes currently in it. I wonder if I will get him as one of my interviewers. He said that there would be a chance. That would be cool.

SAM LEE:

yep that’s a certain degree of motivation i cannot convoke

haha no
yea it is rly lame for me to complain when i’ve the honor to be selected. I’m probably gonna drive up there with some other interviewees and maybe do a little spending on michigan ave? haha we’ll see
