Northwestern University Early Decision thread 2010

Applying ED for Weinberg Econ + Poli Sci. I think I have an okay shot, hopefully I get in but if I don’t, not the end of the world.

Hey! Good luck and I like your major. I was so close to choosing Econ as well

thank you destroyer! i get a satisfying SAT score and an OK toefl score. but i’m really worried about my essay and experience. i don’t know. hope everyone good luck!

haha salena gomez is only ok cuz she is good looking. All these idiot celebreties suck. But ya about NU, did you guys take the subject tests? I got a 740 in US History and a 700 Math 2… The US History is good but the math is iffy. Its not in a high percentile. I couldnt find any info on NU’s sat subject tests though, so oh well

Hey everyone! I applied ED to SoC for Radio/TV/Film. My stats are probably towards the bottom of the middle fifty percent (30 ACT, 92 UW average, top 18% of class), so you guys all probably have a better chance than me. I knew NU was a reach for me, but I figured that only shot I had was applying early, and it’s pretty much always been my dream school. I probably won’t get in, but at least I won’t be able to regret not trying!

Ya you always have to go for it! Most kids who get in have a little bit better ACT score, but a 30 isnt going to be detrimental. I only have 1 point better, so we’re in the same boat! Besides, they reject kids with 33s and higher all the time. Clearly ACT scores aren’t everything.

Thanks. Yeah, I think NU does a pretty good job at considering applicants in a holistic way, at least from what I’ve heard and read. And I do have great extra-curriculars and essays. I’m wondering, though, if sometimes colleges only look to take a certain amount of kids applying ED from the same school? Because there are six (including me) that I know of from my school. But I think I’m the only one applying to the SoC.

I visited NU this summer, coming from all the way over here in Philly. The previous day I had visited UChicago and immediately took it off my list. Then we drove up from downtown Chicago to Evanston, the drive along the lake was beautiful. Even though I visited in the summer, everything at NU was high class. I visited a few top schools before I finally ended up in Chicago but when I got there it blew all of the others I had visited completely out of the water. I applied to McCormick. December 15th feels so far away! Best of luck to everyone!

I agree. There was like an instant spark when I visited the campus. And. like you. I took U of Chicago off as soon as I visited the capmus.

and yea, gingerNY, stay optimistic. your stats are far from horrible. you probably have a pretty good shot. Class rank is a little iffy, but not many people have perfect stats. Applying ED def helps:)

I was looking and the ED acceptance rate is like 40%! I think I saw this on US News

Thanks for the optimism, imi1928. I really hope that applying ED will make my less-than-fantastic rank more forgivable. My school is ridiculously competitive (have any of you ever heard of Westchester County in NY?), so once you get into the 90’s, rank can change based on one tenth of percentage point. It sucks, lol.

I had to laugh at what you guys said about UChicago. I completely agree! There really wasn’t a distinct vibe coming from the students or the atmosphere, it was just kind of bland. And the Hyde Park area really isn’t the best location for a college. NU, on the other hand, is just about perfect. Even if I don’t get in, though, I have a lot of other schools that I applied to and love. Just…not as much as NU. Haha.

Good luck to all!

Yeah I’m just not feeling U Chicago haha. and I’m sure NU will take into account your school’s competitiveness.

I just really really really really, ok now I sound desperate haha ,but I love NU. Plus I’m not looking forward to do any more applications…haha

Really? About UChicago??? The one thing I wish NU had was the articheture of UChicago! I heard it looks like Hogwarts, which is why I think it might be my second favorate school… hahaha. Is the campus that bad? And does NU have gothic arcitecture? I asked an alum and she said the old library and some other stuff. How much? Is it all modern? I havent been able to travel across the country to look at it, just all online stuff like pics and videos

UChicago’s architecture isn’t ugly, it’s more like the neighborhood and the fact that the campus isn’t really compact and unified as much as other colleges’. And the general assumption made about UChicago and the students there are that they don’t really like to have a lot of fun. So, it’s more that the school’s style and vibe isn’t great.

The architecture is very nice. The university is currently going through what seems to be a major construction project. A large amount of new buildings are going up. They recently completed a gigantic dorm, I believe its called “new south” or something like that. I saw that they have a brand new field house and it appears that they are adding an addition onto the school of medicine. Overall, It is a very nice campus. The campus is definitely a little to spread out for my liking and it was a bit of surprise to see exactly what Hyde Park looked like, when I actually thought it was a very lavish neighborhood before I visited. Anyway, Northwestern is beautiful and the campus seems very “user friendly” for lack of a better word. I’m sure many people will see Northwestern and love it while others may prefer UChicago. Either way, its by far my favorite.

Ohh. Ya its “where fun goes to die.” I killed my fun a while ago. Murder-Suicide. hahaha. So is NU real modern looking? From pictures i’ve seen both, but not much of both.

Most of the buildings at NU have older looking facades, I’m not sure exactly what style of architecture it is but i would presume its some form that may be post-gothic. Most of the buildings are a light grey hue. All of the older buildings have ivy growing on them, I believe its the same type of ivy that grows in the outfield at Wrigley Field. As you move towards the lake on campus, the buildings are more up to date. Most of the buildings you will see during the drive along NU’s campus are older. The library itself is some neo-gothic style, it resembles books being pulled from shelves. The campus has its own lagoon, which some of the buildings face. I would say that most of the buildings are older.

sweet! Has its own lake just like Hogwarts. Check. hahaha. I love Harry Potter. But ya that sounds great! Just what I was hoping for.

the library is brutalist along with a few other buildings…blegh

Article in today’s Daily Northwestern about ED applications:
