Northwestern vs Imperial vs Rice vs CMU

Ok guys I got admitted into all 4 colleges and I cant decide between them (actually I’ve eliminated Rice and CMU and its down to NU vs Imperial). Imperial is certainly regarded very highly in my part of the world (South Asia), perhaps more well known than most US colleges but i hate the rigid UK education system in which you cant switch your major and explore stuff outside it and i am unsure as to which engineering I want to do ( currently leaning towards meche). Furthermore, imperial is pretty easy to get into, no accomplishment whatsoever as any one with straight As is pretty much guaranteed a place there and lacks your typical college feel i.e it does not provide a college experience, campus or sense of community. My social skills aren’t exactly superb and I feel I will feel alienated and lonely at imperial college as it will be much harder to make friends. Furtherrmore, I find the idea of being surrounded with only science people who have only academics to be proud of and not much in terms of extra curriculars and personality extremely boring. In this sense I prefer NU and the US education system in general but I am afraid that NU’s lack of name recognition may hurt me if I work in my home country.

why’d u eliminate CMU and rice??

and is tht carnegie mellon or central michigan??

I would say go for Imperial.
Btw, is imperial funding you? and what about northwestern? Or are you goin for the option of self-financing?

Yes its Carnegie Mellon and I eliminated Rice because its not even well known in the US outside Texas so forget the rest of the world and CMU because I felt it was too science oriented (same problem as Imperial though definitely more flexible than Imperial). Plus Northwestern at least has a greater overall reputation in the US although CMU is better for engineering. Don’t know about world reputation.

MIndhunter, Im paying full for Imperial and also Northwestern

In terms of international reputation, I’d think certain people would recognize its name because of their business school (Kellogg).

I have a similar problem and I don’t know what to choose either. I am torn between choosing from Imperial, WashU, CMU and HKUST (I want to work in Asia and I think this school is fairly known and I got into their best program with full scholarship so it definitely is a very attractive choice for me but it definitely is not as well as know as Imperial).

I will most likely actually deposit at Imperial, WashU and HKUST and then after I receive my IB results (my offers were extremely high, so no guarantee here), I will go visit each of the schools and see which one I like the most. Financial concerns might not be a very important factor for me as well but as undergrad education is not that important and I might be able to save all the money, I am leaning towards HKUST and then go to a US university for grad school. But yea, I am not sure either so everything will depend on my visits to the schools.

I suggest you visit as well and see which school you like more. If I was you and had to pay all that money, I would actually still have a tough time deciding as the pros-cons of each university you mentioned is exactly what I believe as well. The way I also see it, is that US college life might be better than UK college life, so in the end your decision should be probably be decided upon what kind of college life you want to have.

No contest, imperial hands down. Anything to do with science = Imperial. You’ll get great internships in the summer from freshman year, and you will have even better Alumni connections. Imperial, LSE are on par with Harvard in some aspects.

^ Not at all true. Imperial is overrated. The truth is, Imperial does not have as much resources as elite American schools do. NU, Rice and CMU are all fantastic are better than Imperial engineering and science. The THES QS ranked Imperial in the top because THES-QS is British based. That ranking is rubbish.

I would say the best options here are either NU or Rice. However, if you’re looking for computer science and computer engineering, CMU is better regarded for those programs. But as a whole, NU and Rice are the best bets here. Plus, as a South Asian citizen, your chances of migrating to the US and being able to get an American working visa would be easier. If you’ll graduate from Imperial, you would have a hard time getting an American employer.

What have the British engineering schools accomplished in engineering in the past few decades? ;)
