Not another Barrett post! But really, I need some input

I am currently a junior in high school and have dealt with some health issues that have taken a blow to my academics and EC’s due to many absences. I would really like to attend Barrett, and I was wondering if I would still have a chance.

-After making up 7 seven classes, my GPA would be at about a 3.7, not including senior year.

-I am planning on getting a 29 or 30 on the ACT (Got a 26 the first time without studying)

-I am hoping to get at least a 1340 on the SAT (CR + M)

-My EC’s include: Speech and Debate, Drama Club, Improv (Officer), Creative Writing Club, Photo Club, Media Club, I am an anchor on the announcements as well as a producer for the news shows we do. I have volunteered at the library and hospital, and I am hoping to get into a volunteer job at TeenLifeline this summer. My photography and writing has been published in a literary magazine as well.

The woman I spoke to that visited my school from Barrett said that there was a different essay topic that I could write since my academics and ECs are on the low side due to the amount of school that I missed. So basically, do I have a chance?

My advice to you would be to put a lot of extra effort into your essay. If you retake your classes and get your projected ACT/SAT scores you will be within the Barrett range of admission statistics. However, your essay will help explain your hardships and why your academics suffered in the first place. Don’t try to make excuses, just try and demonstrate your commitment to improve and your passion for a Barrett acceptance. I know a lot of people with lower GPAs and scores that were admitted with fantastic essays. So dont give up hope!

Thank you. Hopefully the fact that I worked my butt off purely for the chance of getting into BHC will persuade them to admit me. Do you think my lack of EC’s will hurt me?

No, I don’t think your EC’s will hurt you. If you get the grades & scores that you projected, you should be in good shape. StanfordGirl made some really good points; your essay is your chance to show the admissions officers what’s important to you and how being a Barrett student can help your passions. Make sure to apply early because, as part of Barrett’s recruiting team, I can tell you that spots fill up fast.

as a current barrett student heres some advice…wait until junior year of college to enroll in barrett…you get to skip human event (literally the most pointless and time consuming class ever unless youre a philosophy major, and not easy to get an a in) and only need upper division honors credits…additionally, you can still get in freshman housing at barrett, which is actually pretty sweet, but is the only real tangible upside of barrett beside a gold star on your resume. assuming a solid gpa at that point you should have no problem

^ this is very interesting. Could you expand on your thoughts about going into Barrett’s as a freshman vs. upperclassmen. How do you get into Barrett’s dorms as a freshman? Also, what GPA/what else do you need to get in as a junior?
Any other observations about Barrett’s would be greatly appreciated!

basically the requirements you need to complete are waaay less if you join as a junior…the ones that i considered most annoying(human event and lower division honors contracts) get taken away…also barrett housing is undoubtedly the best on campus and the dining hall is the best is well, although i have to admit it seems to be declining. But if you talk to people at barrett, like the dean of admissions for barrett, and inform them of your intentions to join barrett later they have been know to allow non barrett students to live in barrett which is the biggest benefit anyway. im not 100% sure whats needed in terms of gpa later on but i bet anything north of a 3.6 a couple solid recs and a nice essay would do the trick

^ great info re. the housing option. I had no idea that was possible.
Would you be comfortable posting your test scores and/or indicating what scores you think would make some one competitive if they are completely unhooked? thanks!

well i actually had a perfect act and was national merit lol but im a really poor indicator…the reason i went to asu is the great scholarship package they offered, the atmosphere and general culture, which is amazing btw, and the fact i knew i wanted to go to law school which makes the prestige of my undergrad kinda irrelevant… i think like a 30 and a solid gpa would do it though…my roommate is trying to do this and his scores arent good…but apparently showing interest is a big deal…he claims that by talking to barrett admin hes kinda gotten them to overlook his numbers…also if you apply in college itll just be your college gpa that matters…3.5 or 6 is prolly enough

congrats on the perfect ACT! Probably gave you a lot of options – Barrett’s is lucky to have you.

haha thanks…but i feel lucky to be there its been a great college experience and i definitely recommend it…i only wish id played the system a little more to avoid humanevent and some of the more irritating requirements
