NOT even funny: Marry her, or go to jail.

And now her father is very angry.

Do you think the judge has interfered with this family too much? Maybe this judge wants to have some fun to be a matchmaker after being bored doing his regular job. (But it likely helps save the groom and bride, and their families, some money. How can they spend much money in such a short notice?!)

(The young couple seems to be a little bit too young for marriage though.)

Edit: OK, I have changed the title of the thread from “Funny” to “NOT even funny”.

I saw that this morning. I don’t know why the judge thought marriage should have been part of the choice.

Yes, the father of the bride is angry. His DD is just barely an adult.

If this is true, it’s very disturbing, and an abuse of power.

I agree she may be too young for this (or having been “cornered” into this.)

I don’t see ANYTHING funny about this situation.

Nothing about what this judge did seems remotely appropriate. From the Bible verses to the marriage, it’s all completely, 100% inappropriate.

The probation terms included requiring Bundy to write out a Bible verse 25 times a day (“If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it.” – Proverbs 26:27), and getting married within 30 days.

^ This was weird, too. BUT…what if the judge had just given the same order, but using words that weren’t a direct bible quote? What if he had just used words that were essentially the same message? The quote itself really isn’t “religious”, is it?

Is “thou shalt not kill,” religious?

Oh I don’t know, m2ck, could you imagine the reaction if you took words out of say, the Quran, with the same message and forced someone to write it?

Even without the Biblical attachment, it would still be a weird thing to do.

Also, mcat, why so focused on the woman in this situation? She had just as much power to say no as he did. They were both very much victimized by the judge and I hope he’s thrown out on his butt and that they are properly compensated in some way.

Looks like he was offered probation or a life sentence.

“Looks like he was offered probation or a life sentence.”

Okay, now THAT is funny.

Maybe they can sue the judge for abusing his power? (even if they dare to do so, it is unlikely they will win - it is Texas after all – hopefully this did not happen in the part of Texas I used to live.)

I just thought the woman is only 19 and might not be mature enough to make a wise decision for herself. (Well…just notice the groom is not much older either.)

I remember a CCer here, BRM, once “complained” about the somewhat “backward/less-empowered” (conservative in a bad way?) behavior of many women (and men!) who grow up in the south. She may not be capable of saying “no” in front of the judge or even her BF (just a very wild guess on my part here.)

SingleLivesMatter

Amen.

I think that the judge shouldn’t have given the choice of probation. Make him go to in jail so he will learn that you shouldn’t punch people.

Ludicrous.

I agree, it is weird. I don’t know why he chose a Proverb. He could have just come up with his own sentence that would be essentially the same message.

I don’t know what is in the Quran, but if there were a quote that said something like, “Don’t assault another person otherwise you will be punished,” I don’t think I would care if that was the given quote because the quote isn’t “religious” at all. But that assumes that even assigning a “writing assignment” as punishment is ok.

If the chosen words don’t have any religious attachment (no use of God, Jesus, Allah, any particular religious belief or similar), I don’t see any real issue. But, again, the idea of “assigning sentences to write,” is odd.

I see an annulment in their future.

In the near future.

The couple is young but living together and I think the judge added the marriage part to tease them. I notice the boy said yes and then the judge told him that he needed an answer from his girlfriend. Of course they could say no—but they didn’t want to. Only dad seemed upset.

Id be upset too if my daughter was going to marry someone who couldn’t control his temper.

Well, maybe the guy deserved it–we weren’t there.
