Not interested in sports

My son is 14 years old
Size 16 shoe
6’6
Very intelligent but has no interest in sports or school for that matter
Is there anything I can do for him to see his full potential

This is a college forum, so the advise is going to be related to getting into college and succeeding.

However, what’s important, is helping your son find his passion. Have him tryout different extra curriculums (clubs, volunteering, work, etc), until he finds something he likes. Challenge him at school, have him take some more demanding courses (but don’t overwhelm him), and choose elective subjects he may like.

If college is simply not of interest to him, look into the vocational options at your local high schools.

He’s 14. It’s entirely possible that he’s simply not mature enough to see his potential.

The one thing I would suggest is a part time job of some sort. I know he’s only 14, but could he do gardening? Dog walking? When my son was 14 he got a job with a local dog boarder, feeding and playing with the dogs.

Part time work expands your horizons. It teaches you responsibility. It gives you spending money so you can do things… movies, whatever.

What IS he interested in? What does he do with his free time?

“He is very intelligent.”

Is there anything we can do to get YOU to see his full potential?

Not to be glib but seriously. He is 14 and the ship has probably long sailed for involvement in a lot of sports. If he has had zero interest for 14 years then he is likely telling you he will have zero interest in the years ahead. Embrace the kid on your couch…what DOES he like to do? Support him to do THOSE things.

I do get you on some level. I’m a former all-state volleyball player recruited by a few smaller colleges. My husband also played football at a jr. college for a year. We aren’t pro-athletes but we are very athletic. Imagine our surprise when our daughter didn’t care a bit about sports even with all the support in the world. We stopped pushing and instead listened to her for cues about what SHE liked and wanted to do and it was life changing for all of us.
