Not really chances, but what must I improve to be considered?

11th Grade - Male - Texas

Don’t figure out my rank until Febuary 14th, but it is at least top 15% hopefully top 10%; very competetive high school if that changes anything

UW gpa - ?
W gpa - 4.17ish

SAT
M - 750; V - 620; W - 630 (Totals: 1370; 2000)
Taking it again Jan. 27th and should rasie the verbal and writing grades hopefully to the 1400+ level and 2050+ level

Taking very heavy courseload with all AP/Honors classes

*4 years of baseball
*4 years of football
*some but not a ton of community service
*club president - raised money for charity so adds to community service

Brother got in last year with lower SATs, similar gpa (he was top 10%), and similar extra cirricular stuff

I don’t really want to know if I could get in or not (becuase I can’t with these stats), but what must I improve to have a better chance? What does UVA look at the most that I don’t have, are the SATs high enough, is top 10% a must, etc.
Thanks

The general consensus seems to be that top 10% is “imperative” if your school does report class rank. I was deferred with similar stats. I’d say raise your SATs to 2200ish and get into top 10%.

A boy from my school (in-state) was defered last month and when he called and asked why, they said it was because he was ranked in the top 11th percentile of our class, but didn’t make the top 10th.

Same thing happened to my friend ED. The admissions office called him and asked if they could use his essay as an example, but told him they couldn’t accept him early because he was in the top 11% instead of top 10%. However, I’m pretty sure that’s only for ED, not RD. But being from out-of-state might be different. I’d say keep up your grades, don’t bomb the SAT in January and wow them with a awesome essay, and you’ll be set. They also look for leadership. I don’t know how awesome you ae at the sports you play but definitely go out for captain next year.

Was captain of JV football and baseball sophomore year.
Won leadership award for JV baseball in 9th grade and JV football in 9th and 10th grade (wouldve this year on V, but I didnt vote for myself…oops)

Also, didn’t bomb the January SAT. Actually I am pretty sure I improved all 3 scores. Math was unusually easy on this test…

good luck j!

hope everything works out for you. keep up the good work. work hard at school but don’t forget to take on leadership positions, community service work, and develop yourself into a nice well-rounded person.

if uva is only going to take 33% of its class from out of state, they’re bound to take the good ones. im sure it helps that your brother goes there. write stellar essays (don’t forget to have them proofed a lot!) and don’t let your grades slip. keep working hard!
