Not Right

I studied all weekend for my Algebra 2 Honors Test, and I received a flat 70.
What the… I seriously hate myself right now, no matter how much effort I put in, never a good outcome occurs. My father, honestly thinks I have no chance at any IVY League school… feel extremely discouraged… sigh

Well if you can’t go to an Ivy you might as well just give up and jump off a cliff, because lord knows there’s no alternative.

So you go to a school that isn’t an Ivy. What is the big deal? There are tons of great schools out there, considered to be some of the best in the US, that aren’t in the Ivy League. That is a very pompus atttitude that you father is giving you, and not one that is conducive to success.

And about the test, don’t worry. We all have our bad ones now and then. Even kids who end up at top schools have a few bad tests here and there. Perhaps you studied incorrect material for the test? Always meet up with a teacher to discuss the best ways to prepare for exams or tests. They will give you the best insight.

honestly, before you freak out, look over your test. One simple formula switched with another can net a bad grade…ie, a girl in my physics classes did that-got a 60, because technically she applied the formulas consistently and correctly on problems and otherwise solved them. That might be your problem too. Definitely see the teacher

Studying is more about how than how much. What strategies have you been using? Maybe your math teacher or someone else at your school can help you figure out what’s not working. And of course, there’s plenty of advice on CC…

You have no right to say that. You’re not Asian.

Just kidding. Well, sort of.

^How do you know? Shifty eyes

the shifty eyes are an asian characteristic, by the way =/

cuz, you know, we’re sneaky folks.

…

XD I’m actually not, I’m white as you get (1/2 German 1/2 British)…my sister-in-law’s family is from Sipan…unless that counts as Pacific Islander?

the =/ meant that i was mildly incensed at the way that you, the White Man, have once again stolen and perverted our culture for your own purposes. how dare you. you even went so far as to steal my attempt at stereotyping! typical.

(note: just kiddin)

“Well if you can’t go to an Ivy you might as well just give up and jump off a cliff, because lord knows there’s no alternative”

… Whats your problem? My father is basically discouraging me, telling me I can never earn straight A’s, I am depressed, and I couldn’t stop crying. Dammit. Your seriously the type of people that make matters worse.

… Whats your problem? My father is basically discouraging me, telling me I can never earn straight A’s, I am depressed, and I couldn’t stop crying. Dammit. Your seriously the type of people that make matters worse.

*You’re

What did you expect exactly? You’re moaning about how depressed you are on a forum full of wackos.

Listen, no one is going to go “Oh poor SDMS12, his parents suck and his self esteem sucks”. If you think that one test or one grade is going to land you in community college, you need to grow up and take a look at the big picture. So you failed one test. So? Study differently for the next one! “Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” Buy a good physics review book (like the Demystified series) or do more practice problems.

^Exactly.

I have a very hard time feeling sorry for you when you’re being this stupid and elitist. Like Miss Silvestris said, one bad test grade (and a 70 is NOT a bad test grade) is in no way going to land you in community college.

If your father is telling you that, it should make you want to work even harder to prove him wrong. And if you’re honestly depressed (It doesn’t seem that you are because people who really are depressed don’t talk about it, they do something to fix it), you need to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist immediately.

Don’t worry, be happy.

Hey, everyone needs a reality check once in a while. So you got a C-. Freak out about it, and then MOVE ON. You can get your grade back up eventually. And at least you only got a C- and not a D or gasp an F.

What people on here are trying to say is… get over it. I’m blunt, sorry.

If you don’t get into an Ivy then congrats, you’re just like the 99.9% of us who don’t, and yet we SOMEHOW manage to go on and live very productive lives. One test ISN’T going to kill you. Even if you got a 150% there is still no guarantee at an Ivy, which is pretty much a crapshoot now. There are plenty of other schools JUST as good, if not GASP better.

To have a break down over ONE test grade is just WRONG. I’m sorry but it’s true. You will have bigger setbacks in your education and if you are discouraged and beaten down by every one then you will NEVER get anywhere.

So buck up and do better on the next one. There is nothing you can do about it now. And as for your father, well basically it isn’t his grade. Tell him that it was just one bad test and you’ll do better. Go to the teacher for help.

Also, ask yourself this: Is it YOU who wants to go to an Ivy or YOUR DAD? It is something YOU have to live with… so who should be making that decision.

Sorry if this sounds blunt but it was like the tenth person I’ve heard complain today about nearly this same thing and I just kind of snapped.

Have you seen the movie “Dead Poets Society?” There is a kid that realizes that he ask to make his own choices, and not just follow his parents commands.

Um yeah…please don’t give Dead Poets Society as an example. Thats a VERY BAD example lol You’ve seen the movie…you know exactly what I mean.

A 70 is a D for me. Just so you know, I know lots of “perfect students” (straight A’s, perfect scores, and nice ec’s) who don’t get into ivies, and those that have B’s (and maybe even a C) who get in. RELAX. You won’t know if you get in until you try.

Alright, down boys down! I think the OP gets the point. Isn’t it a ***** to check back after posting an off-the-top-of-the-head rant and then still find people laying into you? :P

Big deal. Suck it up and get a tutor chief.
