Not transferring for a while, but...Comments?/Advice?

I’m currently a student at the Northern Virginia Community College (better known as NOVA to those around here) in Annandale. In regards to transferring, I’m concerned with two things:

1) Finding a college that I can get into that has a better than decent English program (doesn’t have to be "reputable, but at the least, provides a wide array of options and has a good faculty.) A secondary concern is if the college has a good poli sci, philosophy, psychology, history, or classics program, as there is a possibility that I will use one of those as my second major.

2) Finding a college that gives me the space to think and not be bogged down by other people and their problems. That’s not to say I’m a misanthrope or anything; I’d like a little social life, but I don’t want to feel imposed, as if I have to “join the rest of the flock” all the time.

I should note that I don’t plan on transferring until the Spring 2008 semester. By that time, I’d have an Associates Degree in liberal arts from NOVA and would transfer. Here are my stats and other information that I think may help:

Gender: Male

Politics: Uber-liberal, although I tend to hide it sometimes.

Likes: Open-minded people, intellectuals, down-to-earth people, fun/crazy people, literature and film clubs, sizeable course offerings with at least a few unique classes, professors who care, students who care, pretty much anyone who cares. I don’t care who cares. Just as long as they care, it’s fine by me.

Dislikes: Manipulative people, an extremely competitive academic atmosphere (not a challenging academic atmosphere…there’s a difference; I like a challenge), religious fanatics (not religious people per se, just those who criticize others for not following their ways of living, as in the case of my former roommate), small dorms, lack of respect from campus administration, lack of diversity/quality in food.

HS gpa: 3.5 weighted, 3.4 unweighted
6 honors and 6/7 APs (U.S. and Comparative Gov’t were combined into a 1-year course.) My AP credit seems to range from 3-12 units, depending on the college.
Old SAT: 1250. I will probably take the new one. My goal is 1950-2100.
SAT Subjects: U.S. History- 730, Writing- 640. I also may take at some point a Spanish language subject test.

Goal GPA by time of transfer: 3.2-3.5. Right now, my GPA is dreadful (a 2.13.) There aren’t really any “legitimate” excuse for it, but I can say that most of it is due to the second semester of my freshman year, wherein I went through a mental hell that lasted almost a year. I attended the University of Mary Washington for 2.5 semesters, and I began attending NOVA this winter. At any rate, I’m motivated to boost my grades as much as I can, and I’m re-taking some of the courses that I did not do well in. I realize that pretty much anything below a 3.0 is not viable for the kind of school I’m looking for, so I am very aware of what I have to do to increase my chances. Here is a list of my past, current, and future college classes, along with my grades in each:

So, with that, any ideas for colleges matches? I don’t really care about the size of the student body or the location of the school as long as the internal dynamics of the school are somewhat compatible with me. I’m open to suggestions, whatever the case.

I don’t think you need to retake the SAT since your problem is performance, not aptitude. Some schools won’t look at it anyway, b/c of the time you’ve spent out of HS.

Buy “40 Colleges that change lives” (or visit the website). You might find a fit.

While you should look at a liberal arts college, you should avoid ones that require science as that appears to be a problem for you.
