Note from the Director of Undergraduate Admissions (Official)

Thanks @sportingclaymom! We did not apply to the ED because my son was going back and forth between VT and Penn State and didn’t want to be bound. He was accepted to Penn State engineering way back in the middle of December. He has also been accepted to the University of MD and University of DE. He only applied to the 4 schools so it seems like it’s taking forever for VT. Crossing our fingers! If accepted it will be a tough decision between VT and Penn.

Ah, @coffeebuddy I think I understand. You think they will commit and pay the money but then back out? I wonder if the deferred would then go on a wait list so if that happens you would then get in?

@MELTUTTLE They had to commit by the middle of January (which they did) and paid the deposit. They did not withdraw applications at other schools (even though they were supposed to) and are waiting to see where else they are accepted. Then they will decide where they are going. They might still decide on VT, but they might not. My point is that the shouldn’t have applied ED if they were not committed to attending Tech. Other than losing the deposit, I’m guessing there is no other consequence.

Here’s an article that discusses some consequences of backing out of an ED acceptance. Bottom line: as @NorTexApps mentioned, it’s an honor system. Sadly, as competition increases, honor decreases.

@STEM2017 Thank you for the article. Good luck to everyone as we wait for the release of the EA decisions.

Anyone heard of any chances of EA coming out any early? You would think they would be done with them considering Regular decision comes out not long after.

For applicants certain where they want to attend, and can afford it, successful ED mainly means a more relaxed senior year, no more applications.

Just talked to an admissions rep. They said that decisions aren’t coming out any earlier. They will be available 5pm on the 22nd.

I love it when they’re specific. It takes away the stress of wondering when we’ll find out. I’m not a fan of the guessing game notifications!!

that has always been the official stance … they are always going to tell you that. You think you can call them and they will tell you otherwise.

That still doesn’t mean they won’t release early … they will release when they are ready to release them and no sooner (and no later than Feb 22nd). That’s all you can count on. I’m still banking on before the 20th. 15th would be nice.

My daughter received an email today to set up her guest account and review her admissions decision (when available). Concerning that the date they noted they received the SRAR was 2/5/19 - it was sent back in September and confirmed then.

She should have received that email within week of applying. Maybe they are resending to those that haven’t done so.

The SRAR date has been randomly changing for everyone. It seems to be the date last accessed and reviewed.

The VT engineering page says average GPA 4.2. Does anyone know what scale that is on and if weighted, what honors and AP counts for.

I’m assuming it’s a 4.0 scale weighted. Since schools weight differently, VT may do their own weighting of honors, AP, DE courses. Many colleges do that.

If an applicant from out of state (Colorado) has not attended an official tour at VT will it be held against them? I saw in another thread that when a student was waitlisted in 2018, the mom called and was told by admissions that one of the reasons was that her student had never toured VT.

My son has been to the campus of VT several times over the years (while visiting family in Roanoke) but we haven’t taken an “official” tour - we were waiting to do Hokie Focus if he’s admitted. It’s pretty expensive to get to VT from Colorado so we just wanted to do one tour.

Thanks!

Hello @hokieinCo. Visiting does not impact admissions decisions.

I had seen the same post from lady who posted some high gpa and sat scores and said admission told her since she didn’t tour they thought they were a safety school and didn’t accept. Sounded strange to me - guess you can’t believe what you see on the internet.

Of course my son is life long Hokie fan and did visit so we were hoping it did help.

Any chance decisions come out tomorrow?

No way to know
