I am a legacy and a South Bend native. Showed a lot of demonstrated interest and felt my essays were very strong and unique to me personally. I think my connections and writings helped compensate for my lower test scores/GPA. Also went on Notre Dame’s summer abroad program last year, which might have had some impact.
Good luck to everyone in their decisions and to the class of '25!
Your GPA was 3/9/4.0? Why do you think that is low!?!?!!!
Hello @camrynrbarnett, My DD was pretty disappointed As she was waitlisted. May I ask if they gave you any financial aid/scholarships when they accepted you? I am thinking that any kind of money would be off the table If they didn’t initially let you in. Is it even worth it to write the letter? She really wants to but I’m afraid That she will just be disappointed again when we cannot afford it.
Accepted!!!

Yes, would love to know what you did to help your chances.
Does any one know why Notredame Acceptance letter says accepted , but does not state the Major you are accepted into .
Did any one get acceptance stating the Major they were accepted into ?
@illinoisdad1729 I think unless you applied to something that requires pre-approval (like Mendoza), all first years are more or less the same and you pick your major later? Does that make sense?
My son applied as a sociology major. His acceptance letter just said he was accepted and didn’t mention his major or even Arts and Letters (this was back in December). Since then he has received things from Arts and Letters and even the sociology department. What he got from the sociology department said “we heard you are considering a major in sociology”…so I think they purposely leave it open so students can decide after first year studies?
Maybe someone with more ND experience can answer this better but that is my understanding.
@illinoisdad1729 First-Year Notre Dame students declare their College and preliminary intended Major in the Spring Semester and are admitted for their respective Sophomore Year. The Letter of Admission will include any pre-approval for Mendoza or the School of Architecture, if applicable. Students are admitted to Notre Dame with a general description of their future intentions. College and school intents are recorded, yet are not included in the Admission Letter itself:
School of Architecture
College of Arts and Letters
Mendoza College of Business
College of Engineering
College of Science
Keough School of Global Affairs.
These may appear on the Course Selection Form that your student will fill out in June, yet she/he may change intended major in any case at any time during the first year and thereafter.
As mentioned above, the formal declaration of your student’s future college takes place in the spring semester and requires a meeting with her/his first-year advisor who will help you complete the necessary paperwork. Before this meeting takes place, she/he will be asked to complete a set of mid-year self-reflection questions that will provide background information to help the advisor support the student in making a well-informed decision about the future at Notre Dame and beyond.
I have two daughters at Notre Dame right now. If any of you who were accepted are still trying to make a decision and would like me to answer any questions or ask my daughters to interact with you, please message me. I know admitted student day is canceled, so if you’re still making a decision, it must be difficult. Good luck to you all!
My daughter was waitlisted as we ll, for architecture. Given her SATs were very low we were quite pleased, although she has a great portfolio and recs. I saw something posted where ND said they do expect to draw from the waitlist this year and that financial need will be met just like a “regular” acceptance.

My biggest piece of advice would be to contact your admissions counselor with any updates you have. If there is something that you would have put on your application but didn’t, then email your counselor about it. If there are any report cards/awards/scholarships that you receive between now and May, email your admissions counselor! I also wanted to form a bit of a friendship with my counselor, so I reached out to him in ways other than email. We talked on the phone, I mailed him a postcard from my hometown, and I wrote him a letter detailing exactly why Notre Dame is my dream school. Your goal here is make sure that your counselor knows, without a doubt, that you love Notre Dame.
Hope that helps!
@jas766 Whether accepted early, regular, or off the waitlist, all students are given the same consideration regarding financial aid! My financial aid package was the same as it would have been if I was accepted regular or early decision. I received the package within a few days of being accepted. It is absolutely worth it to write the letter! I personally wrote a letter and more.

Staying up too late after grinding Animal Crossing ?
My DD read through the decision thread and spent the rest of the night crying - and she is only a sophomore!! She said that after reading of all your accomplishments and hard work, “it is no use - I’m not good enough”…that is with a 3.9/4.0 UW GPA and leadership positions, Honors classes, as well as multiple varsity sports. There are only a few AP’s offered at her school and most only for 11th-12th graders.
Needed advice: Would you all focus more on keeping the GPA up high, or take more rigorous courses - like more AP’s and risk having a lower GPA? Her school does not weight for AP or Honors.
