DD is applying REA. 1530 superscore, 4.0 UW, 12 AP/DE courses by the end of senior year, including DE Multivariable Calc and AP German, 5s on the 7 AP tests she’s taken, Varsity cross county for 3 years, captain this year, Varsity indoor and outdoor track for 4 years, many service hours at local hospice facility, president of German Club, some other minor clubs. Awards are weak and don’t stand out. She will be applying for business or Econ. She is not very religious, but identifies more with being Catholic than anything since that’s what I am. She will not be answering the faith based supplement question. How important do you think being Catholic is?
I don’t think it’s important at all for admission purposes other than being able to articulate fit. ND is very big on service and community. Your daughter should lean into her hospice volunteering and how she will contribute and fit in on campus.
My D26 attended a leadership seminar there this summer, as long as your DD is comfortable with being surrounded by Catholicism she will be fine. There were plenty of students that did not attend Mass or light Candles at the Grotto, no one that did not attend these activities were made to feel uncomfortable. Notre Dame certainly attracts more Catholic students than the average T50 school.
Thanks for the replies. We think the fit is really good for her. My husband earned his MBA from ND, he’s not Catholic, and it was never an issue for him. But he thought it might be a different story for undergraduates.
Understanding ND is officially test optional, how important are test scores? D26 is not at 50th quartile. GPA, class rigor and volunteer/extracurriculars are competitive.
I can only speak for D26’s high school.
At her school, ND pretty much takes high test scores and high grades REA. In RD, the grade/test score standards relax and they appear to “round out their class holistically.”
Your HS may be different.
That’s interesting… thank you so much for the insight.
Her essay answers need to communicate her “spirit” and how it aligns with the University’s principles.
Does the Restricted just mean you can’t ED any where of that’s you can’t EA any where else.
It means you can’t ED anywhere else. You can EA everywhere.
My DS is applying REA. 33 ACT, 3.9, 7 AP tests, all 4s and 5s. Lots of focused ECs that highlight his involvement in church and service. My question…. is REA more difficult for a kid without any hooks? No legacy, nothing super unique . He is just a well rounded student. I feel like he might get lost in the piles of apps. Thoughts? Suggestions? Realisitic chances?
My D26 is in the same boat. She raised her SAT to 1560 in August, but she’s also well rounded with no special hooks/awards. Wondering what her realistic chances are.
ND unfortunately doesn’t publish what the acceptance rate is for REA vs RD, so hard to gauge which applicant pool would be more beneficial to your child? They did send letters to the NDLS students encouraging them to apply during REA.
What is NDLS?
NDLS is a summer program that Notre Dame offers
On their admissions website, it states that they require two recommendations, one from a core teacher and one preferably from a counselor. On the common app, you are also able to send an optional rec from an “other recommender” like a pastor, coach, etc. Are most kids sending that too?
They do publish REA. Last year was 12.9%. 12,917 EA Applicants, 1,669 EA Admitted.
Also, I received an email to apply for REA and I was not NDLS.
