@fromUSA2Russia thanks so much!!! Best of luck to you on the rest of the NSLI-Y process. I bet you’ll be abroad as well this summer in Russia.

Guys, quick question. Is anyone else signing up for an AFS program(if you’re going for a year) as a back-up? I am (still deciding between Spain, Croatia and Italy!)

Sorry to intrude on this thread guys, but I’m a semi-finalist from CO (hoping for Morocco, then Turkey) and I still haver yet to hear anything about my interview. Has anyone else still not heard?

@writeallnight i haven’t heard either!

@Schnuff3

How did your interview go? Any tips?

My interviewer was a bit of a spazz, which made certain elements of the interview more difficult. I don’t feel like
I did the best I could have since my interviewer was well… Kate and Evan know. (0.o)

For my interview I dressed business casual in a black dress and grey blazer with hose and my hair bobby pinned out of my face.

When I arrived at my interview I was given a 3 page NSLI-Y packet which looked very similar to our application to fill out. It asked us to describe our home-life, the way we interact with our family, who takes charge in our family, what our neighborhood was like, what our house was like, how many people are in our graduating class, what our favorite hobbies were, what clubs were we in, why we chose the duration we did, and a whole host of other questions which I can’t remember right now.

My dad was given a similar packet and was asked to leave after he finished filling it out.

My interviewer had studied abroad in Argentina, so she had a bit of language study under her belt. We sat and talked for about an hour and 30 minutes. I was asked questions like the ones on the interview portion of this prezi. <a href=“NSLI-Y by Kanna Orikasa”>NSLI-Y by Kanna Orikasa;

Best of Luck Friends!

@fromUSA2Russia Also, thanks for remembering my interview date! That is SO sweet!!!

I just kidding, I just got my email today! They sent it to my mom’s address though, which is odd. Anyways, anyone know anything about acceptance rates? I haven’t been able to find anything really, even though I know it’s probably slightly different for each variation. Wondering about Arabic year…

Just finished my interview! It was relatively short, however (55 minutes) via Skype… anyways! good luck to those with upcoming interviews!!

@exoplanet99

Thank you! Any tips?

@Schnuff3

Thank you! I am sure that you did well! :)

Thanks, goodluck! @fromUSA2Russia

Has anyone from California got their interview date, I’m still waiting

Just had my interview via phone. It was really short (30 minutes). My interviewer didn’t talk much; just ran through all of the questions. Questions were basically what I expected: Explain your extra-curricular activities, when was a time you felt disappointed, why did you choose your first choice language, what to you hope to gain from NSLI-Y, etc.
I thought it would be awkward through the phone, but it wasn’t too bad although of course I would prefer a physical one. (I’m in Hawaii so I can’t really complain)
I do wish I’d prepared my answers better because I kind of rambled a bit lol
Does anyone know what kind of report the interviewers send in?

Just be really enthusiastic! haha and I think preparation really helped me~ just think through your answers for questions mentioned in that prezi! I think all my interview questions were on that list in fact (except “What do you hope to gain from this exchange experience aside from the learning of a new language?” and one other one that I don’t quite remember…) I’m sure you guys will all do great :)

i still haven;t gotten my interview date
Hey everyone! My interview is on January 24th! I’m super anxious! For those of you who already had their interview - congrats! Did you prepare before hand and if so how? I see the interview time ranges. @Schnuff3 you’re interview was very long! Were they multiple people at your interview location?
And for the people that had their interview already, how many questions would you say they asked? And what advice would you give for the people who am have yet to have their interview?
For those of you who haven’t had their interview date, don’t stress! You still have about two weeks. If you don’t here anything by Jan 15th, then email NSLI-Y. The waiting game is the hardest but I know you can do it!
Good luck everyone on their interviews these upcoming weeks!
So… Does anyone happen to know how schooling works in the host country?
is anyone still waiting for their interview dates??
@screenname16 What do you mean by that? Can you specifiy your question?
@lovinglife01 I probably should have specified I’m talking about year programs
Well basically how does education and school stuff work? A lot of us applying are still in high school so there’s that situation (credits/graduation and whatnot), and then there’s those of us who are eligible for this high school-ish program but will already have our diplomas. I just haven’t seen much about what happens education-wise in the host countries.
