NSLI-Y 2015-2016

I just spent the last two hours reading the other nsliy program forum on this website. It was from 5 years ago but I was bored and it was interesting KINDA getting a feeling for the whole process. I read it in the fall but it means so much more now being a semi-finalist and all. On the forum two freshman made it so that gives me hope. This time of the year is so nerve wracking and I am dying having to wait…

@EmmaPotts‌ Good-luck guys! I’m not so nervous right now because I’m 99.9% sure I have’nt made NSLIY, and 60% sure I’ll make it to CBYX or YES. :slight_smile:

I know alot of people wanted to see my CBYX essays, so just inbox me if your interested. I also have my YES Essays too if you need help brainstorming.

Would love suggestions and would love to give suggestions to anyone who wants a proof-reader!

@wardra‌ My dad’s family is actually French, so I’ve learned alot at home! I also took French and Spanish for 2-3 years each in school. How in the world did you learn PORTUGUESE?! That’s such a cool language!

@Schnuff3

Don’t be too sure. I read your essays and they were top notch. I wouldn’t be surprised if you made it ^^

@Schnuff3‌ that’s really cool that your Dad’s family is from France! As you know, I’m from Florida and there are a lot of Spanish speakers, but the thing that people don’t know is that there are a bunch of people from Brazil living and visiting here so it’s also very important. I learned portuguese in a language camp and I’ve just continued practicing it here in my community.

@schnuff3 I’m not sure about a major- International relations/politics/journalism/business…some variation! Just out of curiosity, what makes you think you won’t get NSLI-Y? You seem very qualified, so if YOU’RE having doubts…that concerns me. I know nothing is “safe”, but I have felt like I have a better chance of getting this than getting into most of my top schools…maybe I’m nuts on all accounts though.

Has anyone on here signed up for Arabic year as their first preference?

@writeallnight‌ No worries, I don’t think you’re nuts.

Arabic year is my first preference too, yeah!

So people are guessing mid march for decisions? That’s not fun. Late March and early April will be a rough time, what with college decisions and this all being released.

My guess is March 2nd!

I heard that last year the Russian and Indian summer programs were told February 28th. And if this year things are moving quicker, then there’s a slight possibility it could be late this month for some programs.

My guess is February 21st, I really hope we all find out this month!

When does China summer usually hear in relation to the other programs?

I think March 4th!~

But I really hope we find out this month because i am really anxious about these notifications…
I wish all of us the best of luck!!~ ;))

My guess for finalist notifications is March 3rd… just because that’s my birthday! (I also have to take the ACT that day. :(()

@writeallnight‌ I don’t think I stood out enough at my interview. My interviewer and I were both inexperienced and we didn’t mesh all that well. NSLI-Y is the kind of program that really cares about how you act as individual, not how academically qualified you are. I also forgot to put down 3 of my clubs, 2 of my awards, and 2 of the classes I signed up for this Spring. (Russian and Chem.) It’s all chill though. I’m banking on YES and CBYX for my ticket out of the U.S. :D/

For the love of Mary~ just wish they’d come out already. The wait is really tedious, and this thread has gotten very slow in the interim. So~~ if accepted…

  1. What is your list of to-dos in your first choice country?
  2. How proficient do you wish to become in your critical language?
    And 3… Whose nervous for the possibility of an oral proficiency test?! @.@

I still read this forum sometimes just to check if you guys have heard back or not. Good luck guys!! You all deserve it!!

@Schnuff3‌ omg March 3rd is my birthday as well :smiley:

Alrighty…
My top choice was Arabic year(hopefully in Morocco!!!) I have been, but basically medinas, roman ruins, the sahara.
I want to become conversationally fluent in Arabic and French(I’m ok in french and almost fluent in Spanish)

hello, all. Like everyone else here, I’m new but I’ve been stalking the forum for the past 3 months. Just wanted to introduce myself and maybe see if there are any other applicants who applied to the same programs as me. Turkey, Summer was my first choice, followed by Russian and Arabic, both Summer. Anyone else here applied to Turkey? Also, does anyone know when the Turkish programs hear about acceptance in relation to other programs? I’m gong crazy waiting… =P~

So it seems like the year programs hear after the summer? boo :frowning: Where are your guesses coming from? I’m with early March folks. Between this and college, the wait is killer.

@katewithak Same here! Did you notice the mention of Egypt though on the interview form? All would be fantastic, but I would love Morocco. I’ve never been, but the Sahara, Medinas, and hammam (?) would be at the top of my list. I also heard there’s some skiing in Morocco, which is wild, but I’d love to “go skiing in Africa.”

EGYPT??? I definitely did not notice. Hammams are super cool and I think I saw snow in the Atlas Mountains but the Jet Lag at that point was pretty bad so I was a little hazy. @writeallnight‌
