NSLI-Y 2015-2016

Honestly I don’t think that the notifications will come out this week but I have a feeling it will be next week and it will come out real quick. Maybe not in a span of two days like semi but I feel that a period of a week is how much they will take to release notifications. I think that they changed their reviewing process this year…

@EmmaPotts how do you think they changed it?

American Councils finally got their stuff together and huzzah for that. If only YES would do the same…

@katewithak it’s not so much YES doesn’t have their stuff together, more like they wait till the last possible minute…
like me and essays

This is truly agonizing. I probably wouldn’t feel as anxious if I weren’t also waiting on 8 colleges, but nonetheless, I want this the most at the moment. Has anyone else heard about the 1 in 3 acceptance rate at this point? I know those stats aren’t posted anywhere official, but I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere and it’s thrilling.

I’ve heard between 40-50%!! It’s really thrilling, let’s all keep hoping!!

Hello @WorldExplorer‌
Thanks for the info! Do you want to tell us a little bit about your summer in Turkey? I know that we are all really anxious about the notifications and college decisions so, I think it would be good for all of us to hear about your experience as a NSLI-Y participant. Feel free to share (only if you want to)!

So we have an applicant message-y thing in Instagram, and the kid who started it was joking around said his friend heard for Hindi Summer but obviously he was joking but we didn’t know that like

Can I join that ig chat thing?! Lol

@mbeck16

Im not sure but it is just my hunch concerning how quick semis came out.
I do not have any real evidence…

GUYS LETS START A REAL CONVERSATION OKAY?
state your name
Grade in school
program language & duration
and finally how you became interested in your first language choice!
Im excited to see all the responses! :slight_smile:

@katewith wait he was joking right? (sorry I’m anxiously waiting and I applied to the Hindi program too)

wait sorry that was for @katewithak

I wanna join the instagram thing too!

@EmmaPotts I’m Jamie and a sophomore in high school. I applied for Korean summer as my first choice and Arabic summer as my second choice. I’ve just always been interested in languages from the Middle East and Asia. I’ve always just thought they were so unique and beautiful.

Sure thing @‌wardra
I wrote a bit about my experience in this post http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1729361-nsliy-questions.html

In short, it was one of the best experiences of my life (oh wow…shocking!!). But in all seriousness, I made some of my best friends that I still keep in contact with on a daily basis and learned the basics of a language that I will most likely keep pursuing in college. There’s just so much to talk about and so much that happened in just seven weeks that it’s hard to fit into one post. Do you have any specific questions?

Best of luck guys with NSLI-Y! I applied to YES so it would be sweet to actually meet some of you at IPSE :slight_smile:

@EmmaPotts‌, @jjtell11‌ I’m Kate, a junior. I’m a semi-finalist (duh) and I applied for

  1. Turkey, summer
  2. Russian, summer
  3. Arabic, summer
    I’ve been learning French for like forever, but I think it was starting to learn Chinese that really lit my language-learning fire.

I know this isn’t gonna help anyone on here to talk about this, but I’m DYING just waiting for the notifications. I need to know if I’m a finalist! I know I’ll be crushed if I don’t get it; I want it so bad.

Sorry. I just needed to get that out there. Anyone else wanna join the conversation?

@WorldExplorer‌
Thanks for the info! Did you live in a big city or small city? Was there a lot of time to explore the city on your own?

Oh and hello everyone!
I’m Rachel and I’m a senior

  1. Russian Summer
  2. Turkish Summer
  3. Chinses Summer
    I started really getting into languages about 2 years ago. I speak Spanish, Portuguese, and I’m currently working on my French. I’m really hoping to get the chance to learn Russian this summer. It’s something different from everything I’ve previously learned and I’m fascinated by their art and history.

@wardra

Spanish and Portuguese? Is it harder to maintain/speak those because they are similar? Are they similiar?
I think it is amazing that you are multilingual already! I can understand Spanish fluently because it was my first language but I can’t speak it anymore after I went to English classes when I was younger.

Have you learned a bit of Russian on your own?

@jjtell11

That is good to hear! I am a freshman and my first and only choice is Korean summer ^^
Hopefully us young-ins can meet each other this summer :slight_smile:
