NSLI-Y 2015-2016

@EmmaPotts‌
Yes they are very similar, but once I learned them both it wasn’t too hard to nt confuse them. I’m constantly using them all day, so it’s not too hard :slight_smile: I have a book on Russian and I’ve been really busy so I only know the basics. I know that I will have time to study up over spring break though.

I’m Victoria and I’m a junior. My first choice was russian summer and my second was korean summer! I already speak russian pretty fluently but I’ve never been and my grammar could use some work and I think korean culture is really interesting and the language would be a fun challenge :slight_smile:

And for my introduction-

My name is Emma and I am a freshman. My birthday was right after the application due date so I have been 15 for awhile now. My first and only language choice was Korean and for the summer.
I was always into languages because of my father. He did a lot of traveling in his job and he would always bring souvenirs from his trips from Japan, China, Russia, Italy etc. However, I didn’t start being interested in languages until I met one of my best friends who happens to be Korean. I decided I wanted to learn Korean after a few hangouts with her, eating Korean food, helping out her father’s taekwondo classes and playing games with her mom. I honestly don’t know what I would be like if I didn’t get into the Korean language… Nonetheless, I am excited to be a semifinalist this year and I hope that I have a chance in becoming a finalist for the Korean program ^^ And I wish you all the best of luck!

Lets keep the conversation going :blush:

@curlykat‌ MY NAME IS KATE TOO!!
Okay but:
I’m a freshman(I’ll be 15 in mid-june)

  1. Arabic Year.
  2. Chinese Year
  3. Either Russian or Korean(there was a snafu with my choices lol XD)
    I’ve been into languages since forever. I actually lived in Hong Kong and my first language was Tagalog(my main caretaker, my Filipina Yaya spoke it) but obviously my parents don’t, so that didn’t last long. I also spoke Cantonese but no longer do. I actually tried to speak english with tones when I was little and used to have a british accent! But now, I speak Spanish and English(duh) and am in french class and am self studying portugese as I might go to Brazil for the year if I don’t get accepted to any State Dept programs.

@wardra
For Turkish summer, you can be either placed in Bursa (right below Istanbul) or Ankara (more towards the center of Turkey but it is the capital). Both cities are, I’m fairly certain, two of the largest in the whole country. As for time to explore the city, of course there was! After school, I would oftentimes meet up with my host sibling and go somewhere or go with a large group of American and Turkish peers to a local mall or café. It was during the weekends that we got to do most of the city exploring with our host families or everyone part of the program since weekdays consisted of language school, homework, some cultural activities, and volunteer activities already. Keep in mind though that some host siblings and families will be observant of Ramazan so it will be difficult for them to go around the city for a whole day. But I was able to walk and ride the metro every day going to school and coming back so that was my best way to get to know the city better. I miss it every day!!

Hello! I’m an 18 year old senior in Colorado. My language preferences (all summer) are Chinese, Arabic, and Korean. I’ve really loved travel for a long time, and have found my interest in language over the past few years thanks to an incredible Spanish teacher and a fantastic service trip to Guatemala this past summer. I chose Chinese first because from what I’ve seen it is the most common foreign language I hear, aside from Spanish, and I’d love to be able to join the conversations I don’t currently understand, especially as these languages can be very useful in careers. On top of that, I’ve heard Japanese and Korean are easier to learn once you’ve tackled Mandarin.

I am definitely very desperate to find out the decisions. The wait is unbearable, although it’s helping me forget about college decisions that are also hanging over my head.

Just saying guys, NSLIY posted the same exact thing about passports the monday before they released decisions on a Friday last year. I would expect russian and hindi summer notifications on Friday :slight_smile:

Hi! I am a junior in high school, and my three choices were China Summer, Russia Summer, and Any. I’ve always had a fascination with the Chinese language, since I was little. I can only hope the admissions committee will see all of our passion for global understanding and diligence~ and choose us. I think for many of us, this would be a huge stepping stone to not only college but really an internationally-based career. I think its worth some applause that our group is so dedicated, not only semis but every single applicant. We wouldn’t be applying and putting in the work unless we had the drive to make better for ourselves. Most of all I think this thread, as well as Facebook, in all our anxiety and anticipation, show a deep motivation for success and judiciousness for the future we want to create for the world :slight_smile: Everyone have a great day, and keep clicking that refresh button on your email!! :slight_smile:

@EmmaPotts YESS!! That would be so cool to meet some of you guys if we get in!! Fingers crossed :slight_smile:

@nsliyromanov‌ I totally agree with you about that. I think that the fact that all of us are on here and trying to figure out every little detail shows just how dedicated we really are. I hope you get in!!! You seem like a very qualified applicant and you seem really interested in the languages you applied for :slight_smile: :smiley:

Totally agree with @nsliyromanov‌
I hope that everyone here gets in, but even if people don’t, I still think that everyone is extremely qualified and will go on to do great things in life. There are so many opportunities in our world so remember to always go for the best and don’t let anything stop you my friends :slight_smile:

@wardra‌ Thanks for the inspiration!!! I totally needed it! I’m so stressed out! :-S

@jjtell11‌ me too I’m at the point where I just need to know even if it’s bad news

Hopefully notifications will begin at some point this week, I think that would brighten this cold february a bit eh?! Also on facebook lots of people have been exchanging essays (suppose to pass the time) anyone that would like to exchange just pm me your essays and I will send mine!

@wardra‌ Same. I just want to know at this point.

@nsliyromanov‌ It totally would. Idk how cold it is where you guys live but it has been -10 to -20 degrees at the coldest where I am. ~X( So, yes, this would help alot :smile:

Hahaha it was 70 degrees here today #florida

I’m Lauren, a sophomore and I applied to Russian, Chinese and Turkish, all summer. I’m taking both French and Spanish in school. Hoping to hear by Friday!!

I’m a sophomore and I the Korean summer program is my first choice! Can anyone speculate on when the finalist notifications will come out this year based on years past?

@nsliyromanov‌
I just pmed you about the essays. I saw the post where the applicants were exchanging essays but it has been awhile and I thought it would be weird if I just now put down my email XD

So if anyone else wants to exchange essays, pm!!~

@2Klever‌
I don’t know all the exact dates but Russian and Hindi summer started getting notifications on the 28th of February last year. I also know that Korean summer was the last to be notified last year. If you really want to know exact time frames I suggest going to the facebook page and scrolling through the posts to find when certain things started to come out.

@EmmaPotts‌ What date did Korean summer come out last year?
