NSLI-Y 2015-2016

Hey @wmila2 Thanks :slight_smile: and I’m from the Pittsburgh area. How about you?

If anyone could help me with a decision I would love you forever!

Ok so I’m about 99% sure I didn’t get a NSLI-Y Scholarship, and so I have 2 other options…

1 Concordia Language Village to start building up some epic Russian language skills for 2 weeks (no scholarship :( )

This could possibly strengthen my NSLI-Y Application for next year by showing them that yes I’m serious about learning the language. It looks like a lot of fun because its in a camp setting and so many of you have positive things to say about it :). if I did this option I would also take some summer classes in like business or veterinary or something at my local vocational school for fun because I have so much time in the summer!

2 Go to a pretty prestigious summer ballet intensive for 6 weeks this summer on a nice cushy scholarship. I love dancing, and this is a big deal school. However I'm not planning on going professional with my dancing so I'm not sure its the #1 most important thing for me. but it would be SUCH an amazing experience....

I’m torn :confused:

@wequre

Don’t count yourself out before you know for sure! I am pretty sure you have a great chance of getting a Nsli-y scholarship, but it is always good to have a back up plan ^^

I think the big thing is to consider your values like what you really like to do or maybe the money issue. You love languages and so CLV would be a good thing but if it is too much money then that could be a problem. However, if money is not an issue and you would like to do a variety of things like studying Russian and business classes than I would say choose that path. It would also be good to add that in your application next year. But… if you love to dance, then I would say to choose the ballet school. I don’t really know you that well to know where you should go but maybe talk to your parents about it, they could possible help you with your decisions. Just think about what you believe you would have more fun doing.

@wequre, what year in high school are you? Which summer SI are you considering?

Since you are interested in Russian and a serious ballet student selected by a prestigious SI with scholarship, next year, you should look into the NSLI-Y RAF (Russian American Foundation) program that combine Bolshoi Ballet Academy summer program with the NSLI-Y language training.

It’s too late for this year but if you are not a senior, you can look into this program for next year.

@waldeinsamkeit Small world. I’m from the Pittsburgh area as well

@wequre, I vote dance! It’s some you can only do while you’re young, and you have your entire life to learn Russian. The bolshoi ballet would be something to keep in mind too! And don’t give up I would love to have someone from oly with me!

@wequre‌ Dance all the way!

@MichiGo1‌ I live in Charlotte! If we both get NSLI-Yscholarships, it might be worth it to make the hour and a half drive or meet in the middle so that we can hang out. :smiley:

@wmila2 What program are you going for?

@waldeinsamkeit I’m an alternate for Russian Summer

@wmila2 I hope you get in

Hi everyone! I haven’t been on this thread for a while! I am finally caught up again after reading almost 10 pages haha
Looks like I will reintroduce myself! I’m a sophomore applying for China Summer as my first choice! I live in Florida

Hopefully we will hear soon!
Nice to meet you all! And congrats to everyone!

Well guys, I was rejected from NSLI-Y back in December, and I’m extremely happy to be able to come back and announce that I’m going abroad - I found out yesterday that I received the CBYX scholarship! I’m still waiting to hear back from ExCEL and YES Abroad (I’m a semifinalist), but I’m definitely going abroad. 2015-2016 outbounds unite!

I haven’t posted much on this thread since my rejection, but from what I’ve seen, you are all wonderful, passionate people. Good luck. Some of you will get in, and have an AMAZING experience abroad. Some of you probably won’t get in, and that’s okay too. It just means you’ll get the opportunity to do something else this summer/next year, and apply next year - or maybe you’ll decide not to apply again, and that’s okay too! I know that in my experience, being rejected from NSLI-Y just increased my passion and desire to study abroad, and my applications for CBYX/YES/ExCEL were definitely strengthened by the experience I had going through the NSLI-Y process. Don’t give up on your study abroad dreams because of a rejection.

So I just wanted to say good luck to everyone :slight_smile: If you ever have any questions about applying for other programs or being an exchange student in general…hit me up. Good luck :slight_smile:

@evan241

OMG CONGRATS EVAN!!!~ I have been wondering where you went and I wanted to know what came of you and I am happy to say that it is really awesome that you got the CBYX scholarship! ^^ I have to say that Nsli-y was wrong to reject you because your essays were awesome but I am glad to see you got another awesome opportunity that I know you will carry on through with your passion for languages. Congrats again and I hope you have fun in Germany!!

Evan has been chilling with me in the YES Abroad group. We actually get to meet eachother (along with @Schnuff3‌ ) in 10 days!!

Lots of conjecture~ but where are the notices?!

@katewithak @Schnuff3

You guys made it? CONGRATS!!~

We did! Thanks @EmmaPotts‌ !!!

Didn’t make CBYX…really relieved I took NSLI-Y

I’m almost certain that the next round of notices for Turkish and Arabic are coming this Friday, seeing as how they came out on March 14 last year and we seem to be following the same timeline as last year. Obviously, this is just a guess, but I think it makes a lot of sense.
Friday can’t come fast enough!

@katewithak @Schnuff3

You both applied for years in Nsli-y right? Arabic year and Russian year (I can’t remember Kate exactly but I am pretty sure it is Arabic year.) So if you both make Nsli-y, are you going with CBYX or Nsli-y??? Just wondering and I am trying to keep my mind off of everything by starting conversation XD
